The Prince of Egypt (1998)
Good production values do not mend a story beyond repair
It looks and sounds good, as would any movie with a high budget and talented staff. But it conveys a terrible message and I find it incredibly ironic and hypocritical that the Hebrew god embodies everything the movie stands against. Slavery and genocide are barbaric, but when he does the same and commits mass murder by massacring innocent children, it is presented as a wonderful miracle. Just as long as you believe and keep your faith, of course. And what's with the denigration of the Egyprian gods? They weren't any less real to their followers.
I'll conclude by saying that most of the problems with this movie come from the quality of its source material. The Bible is hardly a great piece of lierature; it is ripe with similar stories of atrocities being perfectly fine but only if *we* are doing it to other peoples. Yet another story that you should never show to young and impressionable minds.
