Doctor Who: The Macra Terror (2019)
The Macra Terror on disc.
The colour episodes are a nice touch, and the animation is ok, as a story it's pretty good. I wish there was a bit more pace in getting these animations released. The disc has some nice features, including the audio, narrated by Colin Baker, that takes me back.
Churchill's Secret (2016)
An interesting two hour drama
I have a certain familiarity with this period in British history, a time that is often disregarded as being uninteresting, but it is a fascinating story. How a man, exhausted after his war efforts, continues to run the country, despite his failing health.
Hard not to draw comparisons between this and A Gathering Storm from a few years back, where the great Albert Finney played the great man.
I am surprised there was mileage in this story to produce a two hour drama, but what was done, was done very well. I agree that Michael Gambon was very good, whether he was Churchill or not, I'm still not utterly convinced. Nevertheless the two hours passed briskly, and we found ourselves enjoying it.
Mrs. Brown's Boys (2011)
Hilariously funny old school comedy
Watching Mrs Brown's boys is like stepping back in time, and returning to the 70's, back to a time when comedy was funny, and somehow innocent. For many years sitcoms have been like magnolia walls, drab and uninspiring, and totally formulaic, 2.4 children, My Family, in with the Flynns, and now more recently The Kennedys. The same show with different actors.
Mrs Brown's boys has done something different, the audience participation adds something back into the humour, the laughs are real, not canned.
As funny on screen as they are on stage, how unusual to work so closely with ones family, hopefully they're a close bunch. I for one wish Brendan would change his mind over no forth series, it's his wish that the show continues only with Seasonal Specials. Viewing figures for the later episodes tipped over nine million.
The best episodes: -Mammy's Miracle -Mammy's Ass -Supermammy - Mammy's Valentine
The Gamechangers (2015)
Do video games make people violent?
When I read what this was all about I wanted to watch it, as it's a question that's been in our family for years, are video games any good for youngsters, if played to excess.
I found this to be watchable enough, the acting was particularly good, I just found it boring. There were times when it transformed into melodrama, the court scenes were tedious.
I find Jack Thompson's argument about the morality of the video games a little rich, I'd have thought his argument would have been initially about the ease at which you can obtain a firearm stateside. It poses an interesting argument.
I found it quite strange that Daniel Radcliffe accepted this part, good though he was it could perhaps have been written for anybody. He's too accomplished an actor for so anonymous a part.
The Go-Between (2015)
A youngster become embroiled in a tale of forbidden love.
I'm of the generation that remembers the original transmission from 1971, at the time it was a pretty big production. The new (2015) production seemed to come and go without drawing much attention to itself. It was fairly understated, non lavish, but enjoyable enough way to spend 90 minutes. I was pleased to see the names of Jim Broadbent and Vanessa Redgrave appear in the RT, but fans of both will be disappointed by their respective lack of screen time, with each appearing only fleetingly as Leo and Marian in their twilight years. The production hang over the shoulders of young Jack Hollington, and the young man did not disappoint. He captured Leo's complex relationship with Marian particularly well. I'm pleased to see the DVD is available as it's a production worthy of further viewings. Accomplished and enjoyable.
