The Walking Dead: Beside the Dying Fire (2012)
This is peak television
What an episode. The walkers storming the farm is terrifying, and seeing the group desperetaly trying to escape is really well made. At first they try to fight the walkers off which is very entertaining, especially seeing Hershel defend his family farm.
When the group realises that the farm is lost they are forced to abandon it, and not everyone makes it out alive. I also really like how everyone gets split up and have to fend for themselves, even though they all (except Andrea) get reunited later. The reunion scene is beautiful too and creates a feeling of hope in an otherwise dark episode.
The episode ends with the group out in the wilderness which sets up the next season very well.
A brilliant end to a fantastic season, 10/10.
The Walking Dead: Last Day on Earth (2016)
Absolutely incredible
The reason that this episode is rated so low is because of the cliffhanger at the end, which I understand was frustrating for live viewers. But when binge watching the show, this problem dissapears completely.
This is the most haunting episode of show, by far. The slow buildup to Negan and the Saviors, the looming threat of them getting closer and closer to Rick and the group, while the day slowly turns into night. All this with the chilling music in the background. It's a masterpiece in terms of directing.
When Negan is finally introduced, we are given a 10 minute speach that slowly makes us realise that he is about to brutally execute one of the group members, and we have no idea who he will choose. The acting from Jeffrey Dean Morgan is absolutely top tier.
The looks on the faces of the group members, especially Rick, knowing that they have lost all power, is bone chilling.
10/10 episode for me, The walking dead at it's very best.
The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
One of the best episodes in TV history
This is on par with some of the best episodes in Breaking bad, Game of thrones and The sopranos. No kidding. Maybe the best love story i've ever seen on television, and it was portrayed in just 50 minutes. Like a Romeo and Juliet set in the apocalypse.
The acting is BRILLIANT, both Bill and Frank give performances of a lifetime, Joel and Ellie great as well. The writing is just out of this world, as well as the cinematography, soundtrack and pretty much everything you can think of. I personally don't mind the big deviation from the game, as the outcome was pretty much the same (Joel and Ellie got Bills truck and supplies). I also feel like this was needed as a hopeful part of an otherwise very dark story.
The fairytale of Bill and Frank will stick with me for a long, long time.
The Last of Us: When You're Lost in the Darkness (2023)
Absolutely amazing
This was such a pleasant suprise for me, because I had some big concerns for this show and the casting in particular, but wow was this pilot good. It feels like watching a scene for scene remake of the video game, with phenomenal acting from every single actor. I think the performances by Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Nico Parker (Sarah) stood out the most, but Bella Ramsay (Ellie) did a great job as well, she really behaves and talks just like Ellie does in the game.
The music is also pretty much taken completely from the game, which I really appreciate as well. We didn't see that many zombies in this episode, but the ones we did see looked convincing and scary.
It's a little too early to tell yet, but I think this show has the potential to become something truly special if it keeps going in the same direction as this first episode, can't wait for next
week!
