The Young Visiters (2003)
One of my favourite films
It is difficult to think of many films with quite so many talented actors. Jim Broadbent, Hugh Laurie, Bill Nighy, Simon Russell Beale, Lyndsey Marshal, Anne Reid, Tom Burke - to name but a few. An absolutely delightful film that can be enjoyed as much by adults as by children. Unmissable and wonderfully satirical.
The Martian (2015)
Corny lines and predictable
I nearly fell asleep at times as the lines were so corny. Very predictable and unimaginative dialogue. Yes, the special effects were good - but they always are these days. The characters were unbelievable and hollow. The film just seemed to be full of a series of poor jeopardy incidents which were then predictably solved. The final scene was particularly embarrassing (I won't give the ending away by describing it). The whole film was often like watching an American TV comedy programme(for example, the dynamics expert). This was definitely a film just made to make money in the USA rather than have any real excitement or merit. Certainly not up to Ridley Scott's normal standard. This film is not in the same league as Gravity.
