The Alienist (2018)
Well done show, but really really disturbing.
This show would be a 9/10 if it weren't for the subject matter. Boy prostitutes in season 1 and murdered babies in season 2? These are hardly subjects for entertainment. The show is really well done, but some things are not to be used for entertainment value.
Shadowplay (2020)
Much better than some of these reviews would make you believe
I'm shocked at how many bad reviews this series has gotten! The plot is pretty unique (how many post-war Berlin police drama series have you seen?), the effects are well done and the acting is good. The story has plenty of interwoven narratives and nothing is as it seems on the surface. Sure, it's not historically accurate, but this is no documentary, people. It's a very well done show!
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
Too dark to be comedic
I love dark comedy, but the key to a good dark comedy is that it's funnier than it is dark. This movie goes too far to the dark side. It's a twisty story full of deeper meaning about hate, anger and revenge, but falls short of being a movie you can laugh at. If you're looking for a good dark comedy I'd look elsewhere.
I'm Not There (2007)
Not what you'd think
Erratic and hard to follow. The choice to have so many "Bob Dylans" makes the film lose continuity and coherence. All in all a rather artistic movie that will appeal to some and repel others. Personally I had hoped for something more.
Frontier (2016)
Decent show
Iffy acting, but an engaging enough of a storyline. Worth the watch if you've run out of great series to watch.
Pale Rider (1985)
Oh Clint Eastwood...
As cliche and cringeworthy as can be. Very simple plot that falls apart fast if you think about it. Yet at the same time an entertaining '80's classic. With the watch!
The Serpent (2021)
Really really well done
The acting in this series is spectacular. Very well cast. The style is also true to the time the series is set in. Great story line and delivery. Only great things to say about this series!
6 Underground (2019)
A cheesy action movie for teenage boys
Everything about this movie screams "show me to immature young men." An entertaining movie, but over the top in every way, especially vulgar sexual references, violence, and pop culture references. Great if that's your thing but if you're expecting a serious action movie then look elsewhere.
A Serious Man (2009)
"Accept the mystery"
A brilliant, darkly comedic fable of the way life happens to you and striving to make it make sense is often futile. Leave it to the Coen brothers. If this were a play (which it could easily be adapted to) it would be an obvious masterpiece, but being a movie people seem to not want to look for a deeper point and enjoy how masterfully crafted this is. The pace, layers of storyline, not to mention the uniqueness of it being set in a jewish subculture. Simply a great movie.
The Aeronauts (2019)
Annoying movie
This could have been a good movie, but the writers chose to overemphasize a garbage feminist agenda and bend reality so far that after a while you can't just choose not to think about it and enjoy. This is a movie that I honestly think is more suited for kids than adults.
Lincoln (2012)
A yawn and a broken record
Great acting, well researched, masterfully put together by some of the best in the industry. However, it drags on for 2.5 hours without much happening other than everyone going on and on about trying to find ways to pass the 13th amendment and catering to the age-old myth that the Civil War was primarily about slavery. It's a movie that's probably worth having seen, but if you're looking for entertainment look elsewhere.
The Americans (2013)
One of the best series of all time
This show is brilliant. Great storyline, great acting, unpredictable. They do a phenomenal job of making it clear that there aren't really fully good guys or bad guys, no good country or bad country. I've never seen a show that depicts dilemma of values and situational morality like this show, and all in a very exciting spy thrilled form that really goes beyond any other show in the genre.
Doomsday Preppers (2011)
Absolutely brilliant
The reality is that modern society is incredibly fragile. Most people are drastically underprepared for even being without electricity for a few days, let alone any kind of more serious societal crisis. This show provides a great exploration and evaluation of different ways of approaching crisis preparedness...but at the same time it definitely highlights the fine line between sensible preparedness and madness. The result is thought provoking and highly entertaining at the same time. Don't pay attention to the bad reviews...this show is brilliant.
Black Sea (2014)
A B movie starring Jude Law
Just an ok movie. Really, a B rate movie in the truest sense. Let Jude Law star in it to get people watching, otherwise it was average at best.
At Eternity's Gate (2018)
An incredibly artistic movie about an incredibly artistic man.
Beautiful, creative...impressionistic? And also slow. Not a lot of plot line. This is an impressive movie in its own way and worth watching but don't expect a full biography of Van Gogh with an entertaining storyline, and if you're tired when watching it you just may well fall asleep.
The Blacklist (2013)
Prepare to practice your "don't think too hard" skills.
Entertaining, but FULL of highly illogical moments that will make a thinking person shake his or her head in frustration...and the lead actress is awful. It's worth watching if you've got nothing good to watch but don't expect anything great.
Travelers (2016)
The premise and story line is a stretch, but man oh man is it a good show.
I find it amazing how engaging and addictive this show is despite the fact that it often takes great liberties with the story line that don't really hold up if you stop to think for a moment. That's the case with a lot of fiction shows, of course, but sometimes the writers of this show really stretch things to make things work out. That being said, this show is fantastic. Not the highest budget, but who cares - it'll hook you and you will curse Netflix for not having the next season available right away.
