Gone Baby Gone (2007)
Not as smart as it tries to be
First flaw that kind of bothered me throughout the whole movie is how Casey Affleck, rather than someone who grew up in a difficult neighborhood, seems to act like someone who's desperately trying to pretend he's from a difficult neighborhood.
But what really ruined the movie for me was the direction it took after the big plot twist. It tries too hard to make you feel torn between two very simplicistic options, with the main characters dramatically taking sides on these two options, assuming you'll have doubts on which option is the best, when there is a third, very obvious option. Social care. The movie just ignores this option and expects you to be torn between leaving a child to an uncaring drug addicted mother or leaving her to the corrupt cop who kidnapped her. This really didn't work for me.

Right when you think it can't possibly get more stupid...
It does! I think this is the second review I write on here. I don't usually write reviews, but now I'm peeved over spending an otherwise perfectly good Friday night watching this movie, all because of all the hype around it. How could anyone possibly enjoy watching something this stupid?
For starters, Airbnb has perfectly good customer service, had the protagonist turned to them the moment she realized there was someone else in the house, this movie would have been over in less than five minutes. But no, she just had to spend the night in the creepy house, in a creepy neighborhood, with a lame jumpscare here and there and even that single piano key that suggests that you should be scared. After that the movie keeps getting increasingly stupid, with one stupid decision after the other.
I get it, many horror movies wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the stupid choices their characters make, but this is too much and it's a pity, because with this kind of background story they could have actually made something really scary and disturbing, but through it all I was just too distracted by the stupidity of the characters to feel scared.
I watched it till the end because I was at least hoping to get a better picture of the background story. When eventually the explanation I was waiting for came, the scene just turned hilariously ridiculous real quick, making it impossible to even care about what happened next.
I wasted my time, hopefully you won't waste yours.
Coco (2017)
Overrated colorful movie
Do not say this is Pixar's best movie. That's an offence to Pixar itself.
Coco is a visually pleasing animated film, with stunning colors, nothing more.
I was disappointed, I really thought a Pixar movie on the Day of the Dead could have great potential, but that potential was wasted.
Rather than a celebration of Mexican culture, what I have seen is a celebration of the American perception of Mexican culture (in a respectful way, at least). This was no surprise though.
What made it impossible for me to enjoy this movie was the way the plot was sacrificed in order to deliver the "Be who you want to be" lesson. The first part of the movie focuses so much on this one idea, with so many clichés it even made me consider leaving the theater.
But as I said, the colors make it a pretty film and I was hoping I'd be enjoying some of Pixar's excellent humor at some point. That never came. This movie will make you chuckle a couple times, but that's it, it lack's Pixar's magical combination of plot, humor and feelings.
They came up with one or two good ideas and Death is depicted in a really nice way, but the plot was so scarcely developed some events remain unexplained. Completely useless elements are given a lot of importance within the story, while the truly interesting bits get very little space. Coco simply didn't "seize the moment".

Being a castaway in Seoul
A man ends up on a deserted island and has to face the challenges of living in the wilderness. Sounds familiar? Then you might be surprised, because this movie offers more than that.
The deserted island is right in the middle of a city, a small and unique world in which an outcast rediscovers life, uncaring of the merciless rules the city across the river obeys to.
While he may be completely alone on that small piece of land, he shares this secluded lifestyle with a young woman who, like him, lives in a world of her own, but on the opposite shore, in the city.
If you add to that the good camera work and all the nice music what you obtain is magic. But sadly the movie seems to go out of its way to be funny, too often. With such a nice plot I would have expected to be offered a deeper insight into the feelings of the characters and the way they evolve. Giving more weight to a couple events inside the movie and avoiding that rushed up ending would have probably offered the viewer a lot more emotions.
After scrolling through all those 10-star ratings I couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed by Castaway on the Moon. It had great potential, thanks to its refreshing approach to the classic castaway story. But while, from time to time, it will make you smile, it will also make you expect something more. Of course, waiting for that something will still be pleasant. Worth a watch.
