Relatos salvajes (2014)
Edge of my seat
I will literally scour for thrillers/horrors and the such that I have not seen before. Language/country is irrelevant to me.
As noted in the many recaps, this movie is a collection of stories. Some are thrilling. Some are funny. Some are violent and intense. All of them fascinating.
I can not articulate how much I loved this movie. I also could not peel my eyes away for a moment. See this movie.
The Witch in the Window (2018)
Gave me chills
A divorced man takes his son, whom he doesn't see nearly enough, to his recently purchased house to flip. While working on the house together they hear stories from the locals about the previous father and son that occupied the house years prior. And their violent and mysterious death. They also hear of the woman (Witch??) that may be responsible. Scariness ensues.
This doesn't have an Avatar budget nor the actors from The Deer Hunter. There are loose ends and cliches aplenty. That being said the acting is fine and the effects don't detract. There were a Couple scenes that gave me actual chills and I appreciate that. Worth my seventy-something minutes. Worth yours too.
The Changeling (1980)
Terrific ghost story. Holds up very well.
I love this movie. Too many horrors (especially ghost stories) are chock full of petty jump scares and little substance. Not The Changeling. This movie has great acting and builds characters you care about. It builds a tense atmosphere and a delivers on scares. Love this movie.
O.G. (2018)
Prison semantics
Pretty good flick about the last weeks of a long time offenders sentence. With a lesser actor this movie would have been much worse. Jeffry Wright is outstanding per usual.
Aterrados (2017)
** LEGIT Scary **
So refreshing to find. Legit horror. Tense atmosphere. Creepy supernatural beings. Great scares. Just awesome. Maybe 'everything' Could have been explained a little better but if the point is to scare it succeeded. Cannot wait to see the next thing this director comes out with.
Willow Creek (2013)
Good horror. Great Bigfoot movie.
In a horror I want a scary atmosphere built. I want it tense and I want to not look away. That's what I thought Willow Creek delivered. Takes a bit to get into but when it does a tense scene ensues that kept me glued to the screen. If You want cheap jump scares go to the carnival. Best Bigfoot Movie since Harry and the Henderson's and the scariest Bigfoot
Movie ever.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Awful
I'm clearly in the minority but this was just terrible. BARELY addressed the gay issue which is paramount to the Queen story. Also, they didn't give much background to the classic songs as they wrote them. It's like they were just churned out. Malik was very good WHEN PERFORMING. He was just odd when during the dialog. As a pretty big Queen fan, I was excited for this for a while and then bummed when the critics panned... then excited again when the fans said they got it wrong!! Now I'm bummed again.
Free Solo (2018)
Breathtaking and Intense
This movie isn't 90 minutes of climbing a wall. You learn about the characters. You care about them. You yearn for them and cringe for their safety. Also, the film expertly shows the catch-22 of the filmmakers and cameramen. The climb itself is almost tough to watch. I loved this movie. I was expecting a lot and it absolutely delivered.
