Cavegirl (2002)
"Like a live-action version of "The Flintstones" directed by Russ Meyer....."
The above was how the Radio Times described this programme; personally I wouldn't go that far....
Sweeney! (1977)
very much a piece of its time
This filmis an attempt to cash in on the fashion in the US of "conspiracy" theory films made in the wake of Watergate. Since the ongoing political scandal at the time in UK was the Thorpe/Scott scandal, which was very much sub judice, and the previous one was the Poulson affair, which was still too politically sensitive for a film, the film makers turned to a scandal from two decades earlier; Profumo. With Ian Bannen's Energy Minister as a latter-day Profumo, and Barry Foster as a counterpart to Stephen Ward.
Unfortunately there was no clearly identified Eugene Ivanov, unless Joe Melia's Ronnie Brent (Linda Bellingham's gangster boyfriend) fills that role.
Atlantic Convoy (1942)
one or two inaccuracies
As an action picture and a flagwaver it isn't bad, but Icelanders might take issue with one or two lines;
1. Captain Morgan tells a nurse treating a child with diptheria "there isn't a doctor on thje island" WHAT? Iceland isn't some rock in the Outer Hebrides, it's a scandinavian nations as sophisticated as any; there were TONS of doctors on the island even back then in WW2!
2. Captain Morgan tells "Sandy" "They (the Nazis) tried to take this place too"; actually they never got the chance; as soon as "they" moved in on Poland. The Brits grabbed Iceland; the Icelanders still have mixed feelings about that; it may have been a factor in the 1972 "Cod War"
Oblivion (2013)
although highly derivative, I liked it!
I Liked it! Although it was highly derivative; for example: Tet itself resembled Arthur C. Clarke's idea of what a purely cybernetic entity would look like (a black tetrahedron) Tet also seemed to be a cross between "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"'s "Vejur" and Jack Kirby's "Galactus" (from "The Fantastic Four"); a monstrous machine that (a) thinks it is God, and (b) eats entire planets, Jack is a three-way cross between the astronaut in "Moon" (a service engineer who discovers he's a clone), the Silver Surfer ("I will no longer serve") and the Ape General at the end of the Mark Wahlberg version of "Planet Of The Apes"("Everything I have ever believed in is a lie! I WON'T OBEY YOU ANY MORE!") Oh, and Jeff Goldblume in "Independence Day" ("Uploading Jolly Roger"....) LOVED the "Bubble Ship"; did wonder why a ship with no overhead rotor needed a tail rotor though...for extra manoeuvrability maybe?
