Kurenai no buta (1992)
This is masterpiece
This movie makes you want to experience a different age and a simpler time. One of Miyazaki's finest creations. All movie buffs really need to see this movie. One of the greatest anime's ever
Just My Type (2020)
genuinely terrible
Ever start a movie and 2 minutes in skip to the middle to see if it gets better. Well spoiler alert, Just my type doesn't.
Django Unchained (2012)
genuinely great movie
Ok so you are not going to sit down with the kids to watch this movie but it is hard to express how well done this movie is. Sure Quentin Tarentino had the vision to put this together but the actors really made this special.
This was a tour de force for Christoph Waltz but he was surrounded by an amazing cast including Jamie Fox, Samual L Jackson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Don Johnson to name a few. Only Quentin could really pull such a cast together and set this vision of the south. Although maybe a comic strip interpretation it drives home the disparity between the English and African population before we entered our so called ' enlightened times' .
I particularly like the (now) politically incorrect line of 'why are they staring at us... they have never seen a horse" and how relates to the Caucasian outrage of seeing an African come riding into town in a casual manner. Genuinely great film that should be watched by all to see how the denigration of a race is so absurd in hindsight. We should all check ourselves to make sure we are not repeating the same mistake in future.
Comedy Central Roasts: The Comedy Central Roast of Alec Baldwin (2019)
Bit disappointing
I am a fan of the Comedy Central roasts so i keep an eye out each year for the next one. Unfortunately I was less than impressed with this one. There was an underlying hostility from the roastee that came through palpably on a number of occasions. Ironically Trump was a better sport during his roast than Alec Baldwin who has made a recent career from his parody of the former. It appeared that they were struggling for high quality roasters with a lot of filler between really funny material. Standouts were Jeff Ross, Sean Hayes, with some of the really great material roasting Ken Jeong. Also maybe I haven't really jumped on the trans train but Caitlyn Jenner spent the whole time talking about herself and using the night as a podium for LBGT... which is fine but didn't add much to the roast. Ireland Baldwin was a little cringe worthy at times and it appeared that Alec was struggling to keep it together with a few of her comments. Overall not the slick production we have come to expect from the CC roasts.
The Boys (2019)
Fantastic Series
Look, it is rare that we see a truly original series these days. The Boys is one of these. The cast is sensational and the story engaging and not the usual squeaky clean superhero genre. I was hooked from the first episode. Not for the faint hearted but if you have been missing the grit from movies like Watchmen you will love this series. I rarely give a 10/ 10 but in this case it is well deserved. I loved every minute and cant wait for season two.
Altered Carbon (2018)
In a world of superheros this is a refreshing change
Wasn't really sure what to expect here. I read the books (and loved them) but often they can loose a lot on the silver screen. Altered Carbon however is a not one of these. The story is gritty and full of intrigue. A lot of people will liken this to Blade Runner and yes it shares a lot of the same universe but the story is more William Gibson than Phillip K Dick.
Science Fiction fans will not be disappointed with this one and I suspect it will become a cult favorite.
Son of Zorn (2016)
so disappointing
This series started off with so much promise but by episode 5 it has really lost the essence that made it great and turned into a below par look at suburban life.
I was really excited about this series when I first saw it. I loved the political incorrectness about it. I liked that it was sexist and a little violent. I am adult enough to understand that these things are not representative of how we should act and that this was a lighthearted look at modern society and some of our strange foibles.
Unfortunately it appears that the writers are trying to play it safe rather than continue with the edginess that was prevalent in the early episodes. Hey guys this is not a show for kids and doesn't need to be. The last thing we need is another TV series that runs through the formula for building a happy modern family.
This is fast becoming a soap opera.
