Rope (1948)
I felt compelled to write this review to object to an erroneous goof
It's the below goof, read on:
"As the movie begins, the murder victim is heard to shout, and there is an instant cut to the murderers, who have just completed strangling the victim with the eponymous rope still around the victim's neck. If the victim was being strangled, he could not have shouted."
Well, this is not really a goof because as Rupert later explains towards the end of the movie, and he does give a detailed explanation on how he would go about murdering David, he explains that since the victim is pretty strong he would first hit his head very strongly with a heavy object, before finishing him off by strangulation. The head trauma is probably where David's scream comes from, which was probably not strong enough to kill him but he screams in pain.
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Bad beyond belief, couldn't finish watching
So, I knew this would be an awkward movie to watch, because it's a movie made by westerns with an all Asian cast, but made mostly for western's consumption, though I'm sure many asians will see it to have their egos massaged, though they'll be in for a bad surprise.
I said, I will give it a try, but I'm not too optimistic that the movie will live up to my expectations.
From the title, I knew the movie was about materialism and fashion, so I was expecting something fun and funny, along the lines of The devil wears Prada, or Confessions of a shopaholic, but was downright disappointed.
The movie seems to try to showcase Asians like they are underrated and much more cool than people give them credit for.
I couldn't laugh at any of the jokes, and it mostly made for some uncomfortable moments of embarrassment, with an audience that had a large portion of asians.
I think many of them probably got embarrassed or disappointed too, because this is definitely not the best portrayal for them.
Granted they achieved more acceptance after beating the West at the economic game at which the West seemed to be invincible, after China's shift from a communist to a capitalist of sorts country, but, did the movie have to be all about materialism and shallow ostentation?
How about Asians being cool and important without the need to shove their economic supremacy in our faces?
Sybil (1976)
I watched this movie in the 80s when I was a kid and never forgot
I was trying hard to remember about when I used to watch this movie with my siblings, but couldn't tell if this movie is the same miniseries that I watched in Brazil in the 80s, it probably is, because there is no other. I had the impression the miniseries was longer than 2 episodes, maybe they aired shorter episodes to fit into a week of show. It's an amazing movie, and even though as a kid I couldn't follow or understand much of the movie, some scenes got deeply marked in my memories, such as the image of Sybil showing her fists. Having come across a few podcasts among my mp3 of voices of Sybil, it reminded me of the movie and I decided to see it again.
