Panti & Sutokkingu with Gâtâberuto (2010)
I just don't see why this anime is so popular.
A friend told me about Panty and Stocking, so I decided to watch it with an open mind. I had heard that it was inspired by the TV show Drawn Together, which I loved. Because of this, I thought I would enjoy Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, but boy, was I wrong.
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is a travesty of an anime, and that is putting it mildly. It relies far too much on sex jokes, the swearing gets old very, VERY fast, the toilet humour is lame, and every single character is immensely unlikable. Now I've seen many unlikable characters, from film, to cartoons, to TV series, and Panty has to be the most unlikable character I've ever come across.
It seemed like this anime was trying to out-swear South Park, have more sex jokes than B-Gata H Kei and Seitokai Yakuindomo (which, if I might add, are both a fantastic and sorely underrated anime series) combined, and have more toilet humor than Family Guy. You would think that this would all mesh together well. Sorry people, it doesn't. It falls flat on its face and every episode is worse than the previous one. The episode basically consists of 5 minutes of fighting enemies, then about 15 minutes of two sisters having a go at each other. With lots and lots of swearing, obviously.
I have met various people who have watched Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, and there were definitely more haters than lovers. Unless you are either a pre-teen who finds toilet humour, sex jokes and swearing to be the best form of humour, or if you are a full-grown adult who has the most low-brow sense of humour, avoid this one like the plague.
A final note- Panty and Stocking fanfiction is TERRIBLE.
Corpse Party: Tortured Souls (2013)
Starts off well but goes nowhere
I had high hopes for this anime as I am a massive fan of anything to do with horror. I have also recently started watching some anime.
There were certain aspects of this anime which are outstanding, especially the artwork.
The best part about the anime was the ATMOSPHERE, which Japanese horror excels in. It constantly gives you an unsettled feeling; you almost feel as if you are trapped in the school with the students.
Now for the bad part. This anime started off well, with a good sense of mystery and unsettling, impending doom. As I have already stated, the atmosphere in this anime is fantastic. The first episode actually scared me (a little). After that, it all goes downhill from here- the anime goes from genuine horror to full-on, hardcore, graphic-as-hell torture porn which Quentin Tarantino would be proud of. Young, teenage girls ultimately meeting their demise in horrible DISGUSTING ways happens virtually every five seconds (Yuka's dead was one of the most disgusting and disturbing things I've seen in my life, and I've seen Human Centipede). I don't know how I made it through all four OVA episodes, especially when it turns from horror to graphic deaths/torture etc. And the ending was terrible too. If this anime has more episodes released, I am staying as far away from them as possible. Fun fact: Sachiko looks EXACTLY like Alma Wade from F.E.A.R.
Friday the 13th (2009)
Makes The Room, Drag Me To Hell and Battlefield Earth look like Oscar-winning material... This was AWFUL
This movie is a perfect example of how awful horror movies have become. In fact this movie was just plain terrible, It contains everything that most horror movies contain these days: extremely predictable story, an even more predictable ending, terrible acting, and LOTS of sex, which is completely irrelevant to the story. I like to call this combination "The terrible horror movie recipe". Fortunately there are still VERY rare gems in this genre (Insidious is a good example of this).
Anyway, back to Friday The 13th. When I saw the name Michael Bay in the credits, I had a relatively strong feeling that this movie was going to be terrible. But I kept an open mind. Unfortunately, the movie was FAR worse than what I expected, and I stress the words "FAR worse". This movie was worse than "Drag Me to Hell", which received a lot of negative reviews from the movie-going public, "The Room" (Please don't get me started on that abomination) and "Battlefield Earth", often quoted as being one of the worst movies of all time. This movie definitely contained "the terrible horror movie recipe".
I never thought I would say this about a horror movie, but there are more comic elements in this movie than there are scary ones. There are also a few aspects of the film I would like to mention. First of all, the acting. The actors were so unbelievably bad it isn't funny. Second, the characters themselves. None of them were likable, especially Trent. I was actually pleased when he was killed. Oh and they just had to include the dumb girl and the token black guy. Third, the sex. There was actually more sex in this movie then there was horror, and it was completely unnecessary. Fourth, the character of Jason himself. He does not run. AT ALL. He is a slow-moving killer, which is what makes him scary alongside his machete and hockey mask. Lastly, the predictability And I swear that a lot of the people who are giving this travesty of a movie good reviews are the types of people who enjoy movies just because of sex. Avoid like the plague.
