Downhill (2020)
Downhill Review
Downhill is a Remake of the 2015 film Force Majure. And Stars Julia Luis Dreyfus and Will Farrell. This movie premiered at Sundance so I was super excited for it, but now that I've seen it I'm a little disappointed. I will say I really enjoyed the cinematography and set design of the film. Those things mixed with a whimsical score gave it a Wes Anderson type of feel. Now as for the things I didn't like, I found both the characters in the movie very annoying and both very selfish which made the move hard to sit through. And the reason for the couples argument aka the whole backbone of the movie felt really shallow.
The Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson (2019)
The Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson
Wow.... this movie actually exists... I mean there isn't much to be said. The acting performances are bad, the direction is bad, the screenplay is bad and often offensive to history. Probably skip this one..
The Gentlemen (2019)
The Gentlemen Review
Finally saw the Gentleman! Going in I wasn't very excited for this film. It's nothing against the cast or crew of the film, I just didn't have a desire to see this film. But I will say I really really enjoyed this movie! It's not perfect but it is definitely a good time!
It's really hard to talk about the movie without spoilers but I will try my best.
I really love the way the story is told in the film, they do something pretty clever that keeps this movie fresh and keeps you guessing throughout the film! I also really appreciate that the movie doesn't rely on action and explosions to be interesting like so many films in this genre often do. There is actually a lot of dialogue and character building. But when the movie does have action they do it very well.
My biggest compliant of the movie is the first act. I was very confused during most of the first act and was a little bored by the pacing of the first act. But as the movie goes on it gets better and better. I'll give the gentlemen an 8/10!
Modo Avião (2020)
Air Plane mode review
Probably the most Netflix movie of Netflix movies...
The Turning (2020)
The Turning Review
The Turning is the latest January horror film to grace the silver screen, and boy is it ever a January horror film.
Now I know the popular thing is to hate on this movie but there are a few redeemable parts of the film, one of which being the cinematography. When this movie actually took a second to breathe the cinematography really shinned through. Another redeeming quality of the film is Brooklyn Prince as the little girl (whatever her name was). She gave easily the best performance in the movie and stole the show in most of her scenes.
Now the rest of the movie... well it was a pretty terrible. The first 2 acts of the film is just filled with cheap unearned jump scare scenes one after another and really starts to wear you out. None of the scares really landed and as I said they were rushed and unearned.
And the ending, oh boy the ending. I'm not going to spoil it, but it was bad. Very bad it didn't make any sense and it left me feeling empty after the film.
There is much more I could go into but that would dive into spoilers so I'll just leave it at that. I give this film 3/10.
Bad Boys for Life (2020)
Bad Boys for Life Review
Bad Boys for life is the 3rd movie of the franchise staring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Going into the movie I wasn't expecting it to be very good but I was surprised! I was expecting a film along the quality of a former January action film release the "Ride Along" franchise (which I don't particularly like) but I really enjoyed this movie! Martin Lawrence does a great job in the film. He adds the perfect amount of comedic relief. A personal complaint in the film is I feel like the plot often reveals things or takes jumps that don't really work with me or that feel unearned, and that can affect the story and flow of the film. But the self awareness of the movie makers makes up for that and makes this a very viable January release!
A Fall from Grace (2020)
A Fall From Grace Review
A Fall From Grace is the newest Netflix original, and it is about a women who is on trial for murdering her husband. This movie isn't great but it does have its moments. My favorite part is the film is the performance of Crystal Fox who plays Grace Waters in the film. Her performance is definitely the highlight of the movie. Now I would say the dialogue in this film is really weird. And characters in this movie often don't act or talk like real people and sometimes that can pull you out of the experience. The ending moments that I don't want to spoil feel very unnatural and rushed. Another thing that I noticed in this film is that almost all them men come off as rude and degrading. I appreciate that this movie has a strong female lead but do we really need to make almost all the men in the movie come off as jerks? All in all like I said this movie has some interesting moments throughout but certainly has its flaws as well.
Dolittle (2020)
Dolittle Review
Dolittle is a remake/reboot of the Dr Dolittle that has been done many times by many different people. This time the Animal whisperer doctor is played by Robert Downey Jr. One of my favorite parts of this film is Antonio Banderas, his performance is very good for what he has to work with. RDJ does a decent job in this movie, but I felt sometimes his accent was a little weird and it wasn't always consistent throughout the movie. This film is very cliche and the story goes almost exactly where you would expect it to go, and is a perfect January movie release, as I watched I almost felt as though I was watching a Disney Channel movie.
La La Land (2016)
If you enjoy watching movies or are interested in the award season of films this is a must see!
La La Land is Damien Chazelle's most recent project, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. These two actors/actresses have been in a few movies together already, and you can clearly see that in this movie their chemistry in this movie is so good. Their relationship seems so real, it feels like you are a fly on the wall just looking in on two real life people in a real life scenario. This movie will go down as a classic!
Let's start with the obvious, the music. It is so great in this film! Some of the greatest song in the modern film era! You will find yourself singing the songs repeatedly in your head, over and over again! And the fact the Ryan Gosling learned the piano just for this movie and played it that well is absolutely astonishing!
Another thing I loved about this movie, is the way they pay homage to older musicals, this movie is shot in cinescope and it makes the movie truly beautiful! I really love the way Damien chazelle did the shots in the movie he was able to show the classic musical style in this movie so well!
Now that brings me to my next thing I LOVED in this movie and that is Damien Chazelle, he did it again! After his great movie titled "Whiplash" he comes back with yet another classic film! He directed this movie so well, all the shots were absolutely perfect, I can't wait to see what he does next!
I can't say enough about this movie it is so amazing, if you even slightly like movies you need to see this film!! The performances are so good and the movie really tugs at your heartstrings, and makes you really feel for the characters! And this movie drives home the theme of the dying art in the film industry and it shows that plot so well! I'm giving Damien Chazelle's La La Land a 9/10
Assassin's Creed (2016)
A messy plot and confusing action scenes
Assassins Creed is Hollywoods newest attempt at adapting video games into movies. And I would say that this is yet another failed attempt at doing that. This film in my opinion had the best shot of any video game adaptation to succeed, but they still couldn't deliver. So let's get into why I think this film failed in trying to bring this great game franchise to the big screen.
Now to me the biggest flaw in this film is its messy plot. This movie spends half its time in 1492 and half its time in modern day 2016. In doing this it made it really hard to get attached to any of the characters from any of the timelines. I think they would've been much better off if they spent more time in the 1492 time and developed that story arc and those characters. The story of this film was very confusing and the plot felt very rushed. Often times things happened without any explanation at all. And often times while viewing this film I sat there and had no idea what was going on.
Another one of my biggest complaints of this film was the fight scenes in this movie and I have 3 main complaints about the fighting scenes in this movie. 1 being during the fighting scenes it kept cutting back and forth from him fighting in 1492 and him in the anymus and it really made it hard to follow and really made me lose that sense of emersion in this film. And that brings me to my second complaint and that is about how this movies fight scenes are cut, (very similar to the Jason Bourne films) it made it really hard to keep track of what was going on and made me really confused and made me feel sick while watching it cut so fast and so much. And reason 3 is that they toned down the fight scenes to avoid the R rating. It seemed like they where afraid to make a rated R movie. They would cut when ever anything violent was about to happen and we didn't get to see it, in like the games themselves that were very violent. But this movie would always cut back to the anymus or to an angle that we couldn't see anything.
The acting in this movie is fine, Michael Fassbender does an good job, everyone does a good job, they just lacked any on screen chemistry!
All in all this is another video game movie flop, you don't need to rush out and see this film. I'm giving Assassins Creed a 4/10
Sing Street (2016)
One of the best independent films of the year
This movie is about a boy named Conor played by actor Ferdia Walsh-Peelo who's family is going through a financial struggle, and he is forced to switch schools. And one day he finds this girl, who he wants to impress so he tells her he is in a band, but he isn't, so he has to form a bad to impress the girl.
This movie excels in three main ways, the acting, and by the beautiful music, some of it completely original some adapted or covered by the young kids. And thirdly, this movie brings themes to this movie that are really amazing and they are able to perfectly hit on those themes all the way through this film.
There is a lot of great performances in this movie but the stand out performance in this movie is the character being the older brother character named Brendan played by Jack Reynor. His performance pushes some of the themes in this movie, and in doing that he brings a sort of depth in this movie. He and Ferdia Walsh-Peelo work so well together and it really takes there scenes to a whole other level. Jack Reynor really steals the show, and you leave this movie wanting to see more of his character. His character arc is so well written, he is such a relateable person that you will learn to love very quickly in this movie.
Every performance in this movie is good, including the band itself, all the kids work so well together, and the chemistry in this movie is amazing.
The music in this movie is so good, some of the best songs from a film this year, I don't normally like rock music but it is so good in this movie I sometimes listen to it, which is something I don't normally do.
The themes in this movie are so well realized, this movie is so well written you can take so much from this film. In every scene it seems to connect to the theme so well.
The depth in this film, is hard to explain, every scene is important, I really do recommend you watch this movie right now. It's a great coming of age film that every teenager should watch. I just discovered this movie is on Netflix so you should definitely watch it while you can! I give this movie a 9/10
