Freud's Last Session (2023)
A brilliant film
There is a recent outbreak of films made for people past puberty and this film is one of them. Serious issues are discussed. Thoughts are provoked. Both actors (and the actresses who get less flamboyant screen time) play intelligent philosophers grappling with something we all have to face - is there an eternity? Or oblivion? What prompts a genocide by humans to eliminate theirnown species? No flying cars or superheros, just intelligent adults grappling with serious questions.
Anthony Hopkins fills his unpleasant character with a minimum of scenery chewing, and Matthew Goode was a pleasant surprise, keeping his more quiet character in the mental battle. But the little known story of Anna Freud is tragic and brings real emotion to the story. A grown up film (sorry, Barbie).
Oppenheimer (2023)
Most genuine acting in years
It was nice to see a film made for people past puberty. Even better was the acting - while some 'stars' were recognizable, others submerged their personal to the story. The story was ambiguous, as was the history and the impact on the world. And the opening, which tries to convey thought per se, is stunning. I saw the 35mm film, which was how the director wanted it to be shown and the imagery was overwhelming; merely imagining living with these thoughts is humbling.
There is no gore or bloodshed, no overt violence, just the barbarism of humans, whether from incinerating weapons or devastating pieces of paper, or calculated betrayal and jealousy. This is the best film of the year.
The Outfit (2022)
Really love a film...
...where you have no damn idea what will happen from minute to minute. Rylander is a compelling actor and has never made a bad film. From cutting table to carotid artery, every stroke was perfect.
The Truffle Hunters (2020)
Every shot a treasure
I love seeing a film showing something I know little to nothing about - and having it turn out to be not only informative but wonderful. The imagination of the photography is beautiful, but having the characters reveal themselves is remarkable. The last shot in the film makes you laugh out loud.
The Irishman (2019)
See it in a theater
It is a brilliant and subtle film. It has talent, polish, plot, and suspense - even though the events are history. I remember the era, the tiny details are so accurate it's like a time machine. Don't miss them trying to watch it on your cell phone - this is a big screen picture.
