Look I hate to be the guy that ruins the good review streak this movie has (at least on the app it has one anyway) but this movie sucks. In fact, not only is it bad, but it is also very boring and forgettable. I remember going into this movie with an open mind saying, "Please let this be good. Please let this be good." But no, all I saw was the directors shoot themselves in the foot for close to two hours.
Let me just start by saying that one you see the first quarter of the movie, you have pretty much seen the whole movie and can just walk out. I'm not kidding when I say that the movie beats the plot to death over and over which consists of, "dog is born, dog lives life, dog dies, dog is reincarnated, rinse and repeat." By the time they did this twice I was already about to fall asleep. Now I know that the dog doesn't die the last time he comes back but getting there is a laborious task.
The other problem I have is this. About a week after the movie was released, someone told me it was a Christian movie. Now, do I have problems with said group of movies? No, in fact some are good like Courageous, Fireproof and War Room. But do I think this is a Christian movie? Absolutely not. In fact the concept of reincarnation is related to Hinduism more than Christianity. So, who are they targeting?
Also, if you want my opinion on the supposed abuse on set, while I am relieved there was none, I am a little skeptical about the third party saying there was none instead of the director himself. Seems weird.
But yeah, case in point, A Dog's Purpose has no purpose at all. What's really bad is that movies like Rings and Resident Evil will get remembered before this. And those movies sucked!
Final score: 4/10, seal of disapproval, avoid like the plague
