Another fun greek adventure.
14 April 2024
It's over a decade since I watched this movie. I have never watched the original and am not really a master of greek mythology so I can't say how faithful it is to the original movie or the greek mythology. Though I do know that Perseus used Medusas head to kill Cetus and not the Kraken who doesn't exists in greek mythology. The Kraken looks pretty damn cool though. Too bad it had this huge "built up" in the movie only to appear for like 2 minutes. A full third act with the Kraken would have been much better.

Also mentioning Medusa, she once again is damn hot. Lol 2nd time I mentioned that in a review of a movie with Medusa in it. I do find it weird that Medusa gets called a Titan in the movie though despite Io telling her story in a time she was just a human. Also I do find it questionable that the Kraken was responisble for the downfall of the titans in the great war since it basically is just an large kaiju sized animal.

The movie is still a fun adventure with a good cast and well done action scenes. Unlike Jason and the Argonaunts it also feels like a complete story.

8/10 Kraken roars.

Fun Monster action, no more no less.
7 April 2024
I guess Warner Bros is learning that people don't watch these movies for the human characters but the monsters instead. There are many monster fights and they are all very well done. Unfortunately they could be much longer, especially the final showdown.

Kong is once again our main hero and he sure shows alot of emotion in this movie, which I really like. It makes him in fact more 3-dimensional than most human characters in this movie. Speaking about the human characters. I don't find the humans in the monsterverse movies as boring as most other people on the internet. They are all fine, though two of them are to much of comic relief characters, which modern movies unfortunately seem to add more and more due to Marvels popularity.

Godzilla is the one that gets most monster fights despite having less screentime than Kong. Those fights are all good but come pretty short. I would have liked some more Godzilla action. Godzilla himself acts more of an anti hero like in the last monsterverse movie, which works pretty well.

The main villain Scarking is entertaining but for sure the least intiminating monsterverse villainwithout his "sidekick".

All in all its a most watch in theaters due to the action and visuals but don't expect this movie to have Minus One Storytelling.

A nostalgic travel to a fantasy adventure.
1 April 2024
I watched this movie only twice in my life 3 times now) and I think I never watched it completely only after my 3rd watch. I have some nostalgia for this. It sure is a fun 3 hour ride. The costumes of the monsters look damn good for the most part. CGI has been left out for the most part, thanks god cuz what little CGI they used has aged horrible but as someone who doesn't care about graphics in video games I couldn't care any less about this to be honest.

The acting is kinda weird and a bit cheesy over the top sometimes. That first scene with the Minotaur pretty much looks like if Dad and kid would play "I'm an evil monster, you got to run away from me." Medusa is also in this and she is damn hot. To bad she was never able to use her powers on the bad guys. The main protagonist and his two daughters are also likeable and I that quote where the main he said "You only need one friend" kinda sticked to me to this day. The dwarf and elf are also alright characters. The bad guys are goofy fun. The main troll may look intiminating and again kudos to the costume designer but he sure is unintentionally funny sometimes.

This movie was clearly meant for kids unlike something like Lord of the Rings but its still something you can of course enjoy as an adult. Some more deaths and blood would make this movie more authentic though. There is a scene involving a sea creature that was kinda weird and nonsensical because it for the most part looks like something from an 90's MTV music video. At the end its an entertaining and interesting story though.

8/10 Dragon Skulls.

A fun crime thriller with some sense of humor.
18 March 2024
The movie starts with Mr. Kirby from Jurassic Park 3 hiring criminals to kidnap his own wife to get some money. The story is exciting and has some weird unique humor in it.

We don't get to see the true protagonist Marge after the end of the first act. While she is an likeable protagonist this makes me question the Academy Awards even more, why exactly did Frances McDormand win an oscar for this?

Anyway, the dynamic between the two criminals who kidnap Mr. Kirbys wife is very fun to what, skinny small dude likes to talk and seems to be more hestitant about murder while big silent dude hasn't any problem with killing or certain other thinks, except he sees them on TV.

Definitely a must watch if you like dark comedies, thrillers or detective stories.

A fun greek adventure.
16 March 2024
I'm no master of greek mythology but I for sure enjoyed this movie alot. Some aspects like the monster effects are pretty dated but they are nonetheless very charming.

The story itself was interesting, though on the third act some things are getting weird. Why were our captured heros allowed to keep their swords, when they were imprisoned, why did the Hydra die by a mere stabl on the chest and why did the king of Kolchis put his armor on? Couldn't his men do all the work? Also normally this would give them more of enough time to escape but movie magic let him put his armor as fast as possible.

Also it kinda seemed like an incomplete story because of the end of the movie and what the movie was actually building up to. It's still a good watch.

David Lynch at his very best.
17 February 2024
The movie kinda feels like a Giallo more or less in style but develops more into a romantic mystery erotic thriller.

We have many suspenseful scenes, in particular the scene were Jeffrey is hiding in the closet which inspired the 2nd Pyramid Head encounter in Silent Hill 2. Not to mention the introduction of Frank Booth. Dennis Hopper knocks it out the park with his performance.

There are also a few romantic scenes with Jeffrey and Sandy that you can even enjoy watching as a man and the also romantic and more erotic scenes between Jeffrey and Dorothy, Franks main victim of the story. Those erotic scenes are far more suspensful than what you expect from other kinds of those scenes.

An frustrating adaptation of an video game masterpiece.
4 February 2024
The first 30 minutes of this are kinda "faithful adapted". Why the quotation marks you ask? They changed some things to annoy fans of the game. The main protagonist of the game is a father looking for his daughter but the director changed him into a mother because he thought fathers wouldn't be as protective to their children as mothers would.

In the game the daughters name is Cheryl but they changed it to Sharon and the families last name was changed from Mason to De Silva. Change those things back how they originally were on the game and the first 30 minutes despite other minor changed things would be a 10/10.

More frustration comes along. They turned Alessa into a villain while making the actual villain of a the game, Dahlia a good homeless loser lol.

The villains in this movie (not talking about Alessa) are nothing like the game nor were they in the game. Cybil Bennett, a character of the games act nothing like in the games. He motivations to arrest the main protagonist are also questionable and so are previous mentioned villains motivations.

The movies still has great visuals and and uses the music for the first four games which should have been oscar nominated. It's like this movie wanted to be faithful and its own thing on the same time.

6/10 Pyramid Heads that only belong in Silent Hill 2.

The Philopher's Stone
3 January 2024
I never read any of the books, however I listened to audio books of Harry Potter 3-7, so I can't say how accurate this is to the book, I do however know that the first two movies are supposed to be the most accurate to their source material, anyway lets start with the review.

It's been years if not over a decade since I watched the HP movies, this one was like 4 years ago. I loved those movies as a kid growing up with them and I still do. The story is great, the effects look better than most of todays and the score is also terrific. The characters are also well written and well portrayed.

A story about morals and education.

A story about morals and education.

First movie I watched this year. Just like Casper it has been over a decade since I watched it. As a toddler I always used to see those disney cartoons as a form of comedy, now as an adult watching Pinocchio feels more like watching a coming of age drama.

It sure more feels like it tries to teach children the importance of school, lying is bad, don't talk to strangers and most importantly don't start smoking or drinking or you get turned into a donkey, in the most literal sense in this movie.

Also its weird to mention it, but can it be that the movie has some hidden sex jokes? One in particular involving Jiminy and a fish when him and Pinocchio are looking for monstro?

The Matrix meets a campy multiverse.
30 December 2023
First movie I watch with the age of 30. It starts kinda slow but damn it gets more and more fun afterwards. It feels more like a 2000's movie for some reason than a movie of the 2020's and gives me a Matrix vibe in a far more comedic way.

As the title of this review suggests this movie has plenty of campy scenes, in a good way of course. It is kinda convoluted though on the first watch. It also seems to be a good movie to watch on New Year's Eve time since it takes place on Chinese New Year. Sure chinese new year doesn't start the same time as in the western world but its still new year I guess. Anyway if you haven't watched it, give it a try.

A Christmas story without Santa Claus
26 December 2023
A story without Santa Claus or any mention with him, can a christmas story like that actually be good?

The answer is hell yeah. A Christmas Carol delivers to tell a great story involving on Christmas without much Christmas decoration or even Santa Claus. It's a story about becoming a better person, a story about kindess and the consequences of greed and being an a*shole. Themes that also in fact are part of christmas. It's all about helping each other so we can live in peace as a benevolent society.

Alastair Sim delivers an terrific performances as the villain basically turned hero Ebenezer Scrooge. Starting as an for some reason likeable prlck, learing of his mistakes.

The movie also gets you in the christmas mood even without the already mentioned lack of christmas decoration or the lack of Santa Claus. A must watch on christmas.

A Resident Evil movie connected to the games that brings most classic main protagonist all together
19 December 2023
This movie was better than I expected it to be. The Resident Evil game franchise has jumped the shark more than once with games like Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6 and while the new first person RE games are good on their on, they simply stretched to far away what I consider to be Resident Evil.

Anyway, back to the movie. The positives first, the characters. I always loved the series for its characters. Chris, Jill, Leon, Claire, Rebecca etc. Are all just amazing and having them all in one movie is great. The villains motivations bring us back to 1998 in Raccoon City which is a nice call back. He himself isn't anything special compared to the likes of Wesker or Alexia and his plans are kinda over the top but whatever.

Speaking about over the top. The action isn't as over the top as in RE Vendetta, thanks god, but I would have still prefered it to be more grounded in reality with more normal human like protagonists or characters for that matter. A certain character from the previous movie returns and they make this movie go more over the top than it should have been. RE should focus more on horror than action after all but Capcom again tries to please anyone I guess.

I enjoyed this movie overall but RE hasn't been great since Code Veronica and should have ended a long time ago, but I guess someone has to milk their cash cow.

Saw X doesn't reinvent the wheel, but what it does is giving us Jigsaw's most personal game
10 December 2023
When watching Saw X, it doesn't give away anything new about Jigsaw but where it hits the mark is by making us feel more connected to him as a character, they literally turned the main antagonist of the franchise to the protagonist in this one.

Most of the first half feels like a drama about an elderly old man being afraid to die, the other one is your typical Saw movie but it you'll know what your getting and if you liked the previous movies you'll this, and if you never liked it, that first half may get you into the series.

A solid 8.5/10 in my book. The biggest flaw was one involving a van near the first act and the reason one of the characters gave why it needed to happen. They kinda gave themself away with that.

Fine Action Movie, far away from Carpenters best work though
28 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I like the movies concept but it for sure isn't that well made. Like why are the criminals runing away from the Dad with the gun only to show up again after he kills one of their man? Why was the man killed by the dad only use one-shot mode on his assault rifle, he probably would have still lived if he used automatic.

Better yet, why did they add the sub plot with the dad and daughter, if Precinct 13 was the gang members target to begin with? After all in the movie when the dad was outnumbered he ran to Precinct 13 luring the criminals to it. The criminals that wanted to take revenge on police officers to begin with.

The character dynamic is pretty good though. As I said, great concept, mediocre execution. This gets a 7/10.

A slasher movie in disguise
17 November 2023
Terminator at first may look like another B-Movie of the 80's but its more than that. It's a masterpiece in storytelling combining the elements of action and sci-fi with those of a slasher.

It has the T-800 having one specific target that is Sarah Conner with Kyle Reese being send from the future to protect her. He knows everything about the Terminator yet no one knows of the dangers it causes making him look like a nutcase everytime he is trying to warn people, but those that view him as such soon might rethink their viewpoint in case they survive an T-800 encounter. No one near Sarah Conner is save making the T-800 pretty much feel like an emotionless force of nature.

The score and acting are incredible aswell. Minor flaws would be some aged effects but it doesn't bother me at all. Therefore I give The Terminator a 10/10.

Halloween (1978)

The birth of the slasher genre.
8 November 2023
The birth of the slasher genre.

Halloween tells a simple story executed at the most flawless way possible. Most of these come from Carpenters directing, Dean Cundeys cinematograhy only matched by Kubricks version of The Shining and Donald Pleasences oscar worthy performance of Dr. Samuel Loomis. The way he speaks about Michael Myers always give him a certain mystic making you ask why exactly Michael does the things he does and he is up to.

Not to mention Carpenters score. It's the most iconic theme music in cinema history and probably more iconic than Michael or Halloween itself.

A true masterpiece in suspense and film making that influenced many movies after it. Many expensive Hollywood Blockbusters can take a lesson from it. 10/10.

Resident Evil 3 (2020 Video Game)

Resident Evil 3 Remake is good on it's own merit but a disappointment when compared to the original RE3.
22 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So, I finally played Resident Evil 3 Remake a few days ago and here is what I have to say.

Let's start with the bad things.

Nemesis is a joke in this game. Shoot him a few times or throw a grenade at him and he drops down and gives you upgrades that you can get to become even more powerful. I'm all for rewards in survival horror games but there has to be some challenge in it otherwise, just no. Mr. X in RE2 remake was a better Nemesis than RE3 remake Nemesis, damn what a bummer. And the OG Nemesis in my opinion is the scariest monster in the entire franchise which makes it even worse.

There is also too much ammo in this game making this game almost like a third person shooter and most of the puzzles have also been removed. Talking about removed content, cutting out the Grave Digger, the clock tower, brain suckers, the park, graveyard, open world gameplay elements, the mercenaries and what ever else I missed won't help me appreciating this game more, what a disappointment when compared to the Resident Evil 1 Remake that just added content.

Brad wasn't killed by Nemesis, Dario is even more one dimensional as he was in the original RE3 and Jill doesn't even go to the police station. Speaking about Jill, I don't like her new look. Why not simply stick with the old face model? I really don't understand. She looks like a friggin minor in this game. Also, Capcom wanted to ground RE3 Remake in realism but Jills new outfit doesn't make any sense. She wanted to leave the city two days after so why wearing jeans? Better yet, why is she sleeping wearing jeans and boots. A skirt like the one from the original would be more appropriate for sleeping, don't you think? I also don't like how they changed Nikolais motives. In the original he killed the other supervisors for an extra pay check and also out of Umbrellas orders if I remember correctly. In the Remake he is working for someone else who hasn't even been revealed, who according to Nikolai paid him to take down Umbrella. What a silly unnecessary change. BTW Jill holding that rail gun that is 10 times her sizes and shooting it without being crushed by the recoil makes me cringe and feel Vicarious embarrassment every time I watch it and it makes Chris punching boulders look so normal. Who ever came up with that idea should get fired or better yet, who approved it. Also Barry... where is Barrry?

Now let's talk about the good things.

Graphics, voice acting and visuals have improved but that could have been expected and the cutscenes are also more cinematic, which is one of the main reasons I wanted remakes of RE2, 3 and CV in the first place after RE1make made a game with zombies and mutants looks like an art house film.

While I don't like Jill's look, they handled her personality very well. Who needs Sarah Conner and Ellen Ripley if you can have Jill? She has a strong personality and lots of charisma which I like. That's how you do a great female character.

I like Carlos more in RE3 remake than in the original. He also has lots of charisma and some damn good one liners. I also like his story ark with him getting to know why Jill views Umbrella in such a bad way and why she wasn't trusting any of the U.B.C.S. The hospital setting with Carlos was also better than in the original.

The Hunters are back and better than ever. They got their infamous instant kill and are the scariest enemy in the game. That one scene where you can look out the window and see that Hunter tearing that Zombie into pieces gives me the chills.

Additionally, the game got some nice unlockables giving it some good replay value.

Tyrells role got extended which is a good thing because in the original he was just an extra, you couldn't even call him a character.

If this would have been an movie adaptation from the original Resident Evil 3 it would have been the most faithful and the best movie adaptation of all time as while I don't like most story changes the one in the remake is still pretty damn good but at the end 18 years of long wait wasn't worth it. If I would give this an review score I would give this game and 7.5/10. It's good on it's own merit but a disappointment when compared to the original.

Resident Evil (2002 Video Game)
10/10
Resident Evil 1 Remake is a piece of Art
12 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This review contains some spoilers. So, I have now played Chris' campaign like 12 times and the same goes for Jill which is much to little when thinking about how great this game is. It's the definition of a flawless masterpiece and deserves to be on every Top 5 video game of all-time list. Now let's start with the games design. The graphics look beautiful, you wouldn't think this game came out in 2002 and I would go so far and say that the "Remastered" release looks even better than RE5 and 6. The pre-rendered background give the game a great aesthetic look and the use of shadow and light effects is also well done. Looking at the zombie's shadow when they are knocking on a window is breathtaking when combining it with the cinematography or should I say fixed camera angles. If this would be a movie it would be a contender for film with the best cinematography of all time pretty much rivaling the likes of Halloween (1978) and Shining (1980).

The music much like the environment adds a lot to the games atmosphere and Remake has by far the best score in the franchise followed by Code Veronica. The environment is also the best in the series as it first of all had the Spencer Mansion ,which is far more original than just running around in an zombie infested city like shown in most zombie movies, and second it offers most varieties as you also visit a cabin in the woods, a forest (when just short), a tank with zombie sharks, a cave with boulders that Chris wasn't able to bunch back in 1998 and a lab.

The puzzles are also some of the greatest in the series if not the best. Just like the environment they offer a lot of variety and are very challenging but besides of that there isn't much else to say but getting the items for them is a scary fun scavenger hunt.

It's also the scariest game of the series not just for the environment but also its monsters. Crimson Heads are a nice addition to the game as it makes you think twice wether you are willing to kill a zombie with the low resources you got or not as only a head shot or a destroyed leg will kill them for good. You can burn their corpses but fuel is also very low in this game. Hunters take 3 shot gun shells to be killed and they can kill you with one instant kill attack and if you forgot to save, well then have fun playing thru the living nightmare you survived so far all over again. There is also another monster additional to the remake, but I will talk about this a bit later.

But where the game really shines is the story and its characters. I never understood why many people view movies with simple stories as simple but still good but why this does not go for RE baffles me to this day. Most of Resident Evil's story gets told by it's files and finding and reading them really makes me feel like some sort of detective that is trying to solve the mystery about the happenings in the spencer mention. And yes, mystery equals good story telling just like character development does! Reading all the files written by some of the scientists who became victims of the T-Virus outbreak makes everything about it so intriguing "Mm, itchy tasty" and I like how everything gets revealed piece by piece which will lead to the big picture about the Umbrella conspiracies. I still can't find any contradictions and story inconsistencies in this game, which is what would make a story bad objectively speaking.

So, I revealed my reasons why I love the execution of the story so much but what about the characters that carry out the story? REmake has my favorite cast of major characters. Wesker, Jill, Chris, Rebecca and Barry are all in my Top 5 RE characters list. I like the interactions between them. Chris having that big brother attitude when talking to Rebecca who is all scared and afraid as a still young and unexperienced girl (let's act that RE0 doesn't exist, ok) and member of S.T.A.R.S, she never thought she would experience something like that in her career wasn't she. You can see her sorrow when she is crying over Richards death after Chris told her she got eaten by one of the neptunes. I like how Jill and Barry always ask themselves what is going on in the mansion which combined with reading the files increases my interest to find out what happened her even more. It almost feels like I am with them....in the mansion. I wish they would still have the "Jill Sandwich" and the "master of unlocking" line from the original in the game as I can't see how this would hurt the remake. You can also see that Barry goes thru a lot as you find out Wesker is using him for his personal benefits. Speaking about Wesker. He isn't the great villain as he is in Code Veronica and Umbrella Chronicles but going back and see where it all started with him makes me appreciate him more and more. Especially after Umbrella Chronicles since this game shows more of him in the time of the mansion incident and the T-Virus outbreak. The reveal of him being the villain working as an Umbrella scientist and double agent was also done very well. For me the characters in this game feel like real people. Real people that are inexperienced with the things they are witnessing in this game and they feel especially real than compared to most video game characters from the same era that are basically super human or one man armies. And of course, there is also Lisa Trevor who has one of the most tragic back stories of all time but I don't want to spoil this. It's a great subplot, which is surprising because of stories actually suffer from sub plots more than they actually benefit from. I didn't say much about her when talking about the monsters but she is just as intimidating as the Crimson Heads and Hunters if not more in some cases.

The voice acting is pretty good for 2002 standards. Chris and Jill had actually the weakest voice actors with Barry surprisingly being the best. I wouldn't change anything from it though as it just like the gameplay and the music goes perfectly hand in hand with the story, the tension and the mysteries.

This is a no brainer but adore this game. If RE2 remake is a Hollywood blockbuster with zombies and RE4 is a campy B-Movie than REmake is pretty much an arthouse film with zombies and monsters. It's in my opinion the best game in the franchise and one of the biggest pieces of art and of course if I would give this a review score, I would give it a 10/10.

Thx for all the readers and if you for some reason still haven't played this game. Go pick it up. As a Resident Evil fan, a zombie fan, a survival horror fan or an old school gamer you won't regret it. It really baffles me how so many people still haven't picked up REmake despite it now being out for every modern system, some people, I guess.

Halloween II (1981)
10/10
Halloween 2 is my favorite movie of all time and an underrated sequel.
20 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The story picks up directly following the events of the first Halloween making it feel like a real continuation of the original immortal classic. After Doctor Loomis shot Michael and he fell out the balcony, he was no longer there which leads to a crazy exciting game of cat and mouse between Loomis and Michael Myers and later also on Michael Myers and Laurie Strode.

Director Rick Rosenthal and cinematographer Dean Cundey do a good job with capturing the feel of its predecessor. In fact Halloween 2 surpasses the original movies atmosphere in some ways. Probably because it plays in night time the entire movie giving this one a very cold and eerie atmosphere. John Carpenters score which sounds more aggressive this time may contribute to this as well. So does also the hospital setting that gives the movie a very claustrophobic feeling.

Donald Pleasence again delivered an Oscar worthy performance as Doctor Samuel Loomis. Even though he spent 15 years with Myers he still is not in control of the situation nor does he know what Michael is up to. Loomis is very hysterical in his attempts to finally put his adversary down so much that he is really having a hard time justifying his actions to others as he tries to explain himself and to warn the others about the absolutely deadly threat posed by Myers so much that he himself could wear a straight jacket anytime soon.

Jamie Lee Curtis is back as Laurie Strode. She is not having as much screen time as in the original but that alright. After all it's Loomis who is the real protagonist of the first two films with Laurie being the deuteragonist. Despite her smaller role she did as good as in the first movie.

But now lets talk about Michael Myers himself. This time played by Dick Warlock. Despite Warlock being the shortest actor to play Michael Myers it doesn't bother in the slightest. His slow walking, movements and postures ensure for an threatening figure and supernatural force you don't want to mess with. Seeing him creeping around on empty hallways, being one step ahead of Dr. Loomis and playing with his victims in a sadistic way, again add a lot to the atmosphere and make Michael Myers a great villain you will remember. The kills are great. Especially the bath tube kill and the syringe one. Michael is more brutal as he is in the original which obviously comes from the higher movie budget and the fact that Friday the 13th was such a huge success. You can say that this version of Michael Myers was the template for the T-800 and the T-1000 in both Terminator 1 and 2 and even Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Men does have some little Halloween 2 Michael Myers in him.

There are some minor flaws in this movie. My biggest issue with the movie is not really a flaw though but walking with an tiny scalpel is visually not as stunning as wielding a big kitchen knife. Michael should have sticked with that one. Actual flaws would be the fact that you could see Annie's eyes blink despite being dead or Michael landing on grass in H2 despite him landing on the dirt after falling down the balcony in H1. Or the one where you can see behind the set when the hospital explodes. Some may consider it a big flaw that Laurie wasn't screaming "Help me" right after she saw Loomis and the other but can you really think clearly when you took some medicines that daze you? I probably couldn't.

Unlike some others I like the plot reveal of Michael and Laurie being sibling and I think it extended on the original plot very well. Having Michael killing for no reason may work in the original but it really is not good story telling making sequel after sequel and say: "He does this just because..." And Michael Myers would probably not as iconic as he is now without some good and even bad sequels.

Anyway despite minor issues I call Halloween 2 my favorite movie of all time and give it a 10/10. And remember Happy Halloween Silver Shamrock.
