Zero (2010)
Perhaps predictable but inventive and beautifully made
I saw this with my 10-year old son In spite of the stop motion animation with wool balls (!!!) which could have lent itself to lack of emotional expression, he was so taken and upset by the story that half way through he started to weep like a fountain and refused to proceed viewing But he was intrigued and impressed, he really WANTED to know that it ends well for zero So a few days later we went back to Amazon And watched the ending He was so happy that immediately called his older brothers asking them to watch - all rooted for Zero and found the story moving and beautifully told Well done!!! In the end what matters is a beautiful story well told, and the simplicity of the wool balls (DNA strands?) rather adds to the story
Finding Dory (2016)
A trip down memory lane-only better!
I saw this at EIFF. I still remember being scared and crying and laughing at finding Nemo when I was a child... this time round I just can say it was an absolute delight! Maybe I have grown up so the scary parts did not get at me this time round ;-) This said, small kids may find some parts of the story upsetting, but it is a great movie in the Pixar classic tradition, and explores well the theme of family and loneliness. Ellen de Generes voice-over is also great Go and watch it! This is another winner for Pixar and I am so happy, being Scottish, that they so often choose to premiere their movies at EIFF Thanks Pixar!!!!!
The White King (2016)
Standing up for yourself without the gimmicks
I saw this at the opening at EIFF For once a movie that shows us an adolescent understanding how propaganda can blind you, and standing up for himself in a believable real life scenario. No sci-fi gimmicks or ninjas here- which is a reason why it may not appeal to some people. But this is real life, and if you are 12, these are the means you have at your disposal. How propaganda and politician's lies can deceive us is very topical at the moment - in national and international politics. The narrative is at times disjointed and I was not sure if it reflected the episodic nature of the original novel or the disorientation of the child (an excellent Lorenzo Allchurch) facing the realisation his world is different from what he believes A particularly believable performance by Jonathan Pryce as the grandfather torn between duty and love.
