Wonka (2023)
A Charming Prequel with Heart
So, I caught the new "Wonka" flick recently, and I gotta say, it really hit the sweet spot for me. Timothée Chalamet as Wonka brought this whole new charm to the character - it's like he was born for the role.
And can we talk about Calah Lane as Noodle? She added this extra layer of heart to the story, making it all the more enjoyable. Plus, diving into Wonka's past and his relationship with his mom? That got me right in the feels.
The movie balanced nostalgia with a fresh twist. It's like revisiting an old friend while discovering something new. The storyline felt just right - not too predictable, not too out there.
If you're into a delightful mix of charm, heart, and a dash of nostalgia, "Wonka" is the ticket. Timothée Chalamet's performance and the whole storyline make it a must-watch, whether you're a die-hard fan or just dipping your toes into Wonka's world.
Mom (2013)
Mom moments of comedy/emotion
I've added a few upcoming programmes to my 'watch-list' over the past few months.
'Mom' I first became aware of after the absence of Anna Faris from our screens since I had seen 'What's your number' The premise sounded promising and it was exciting to hear of Anna to star in a televised sitcom that could air once a week.
The plot-line to the show puts Kristy (Anna Faris) at crossroad situation where she has recently become sober from alcohol and is now dealing with building a stronger relationship with her children (Blake Garrett Rosenthal and Sadie Calvano) and struggling to forgive her mother (Allison Janney) for the past. Kristy also has leaned on her boss (Nathan Corddry) for comfort during this time. The emotional comedic aspect that the pilot showcases is definitely refreshing. I enjoyed this element of the episode so much that I even considered the possibility of it taken on a serious dramatic turn within later episodes that could be enjoyable and unique.
I have noted both some positives and negatives (aspects to work on) from Episode one: . Cast. Great casting of the three generation of women in the show ;Anna Faris, Allison Janney, Sadie Calvano. Great chemistry between all three actors who appear to genuinely enjoy the role.
. Mom- moments. There are some genuine funny and emotional moments that are scattered throughout the episode without overloading on either. The balance is fair between the two elements and there is even some laugh out moments such as scenes between Kristy and Bonnie discussing their past history.
. The pilot was structured like a ladder as that it was told step by step without overloading the viewer with too much information. There lies a strong continuance factor to develop further story lines to continue a strong season with the hope of a renewal.
Negatives from episode one: . The odd unfunny Mom moments. The Opening scene of Kristy on shift in the restaurant where she appears emotional and at breaking point wasn't that funny. Although I did enjoy the emotional side of this character the scene really let the introduction of the episode down.
. Kristy's love interest simply does not entertain me. Perhaps its the casting of Nathan Corddry. The overused plot-line of 'sleeping with your boss/someone who is married' has been used twice already in this episode.
I am looking forward to seeing where the series goes in terms of comedy and emotional paths. The secret to success here is the cast, If the cast and the writers are utilized to the maximum success will follow throughout the rest of the season.
Snooki & JWoww (2012)
Less Partying , more Pooping for Snooki
Firstly ever since Jersey Shore there has been the creation of one of the most unique reality character to come out of MTV in many years; Snooki or her real name which many including myself wasn't fully aware of existed 'Nicole Elizabeth Polizzi' I guess even when you were in school and someone had a nickname you would actually forget their real name existed.
From Snooki's antics on Jersey shore this led MTV with an opportunity when there was a air of repeated plot lines and the cast not being the unknown reality stars to devise some new concepts for the now famous faces of this show. Snooki's best friend on the show JWOW or Jennifer Farley has always came across on the show as the more sensible one between them in their friendship and there has been some really genuine moments in Jersey Shore where their friendship is seen as sweet. MTV seen this genuine friendship and decided to base a new show around them moving into together into the city. The original concept was to have the girls doing some of the crazy stuff that they had done on the show ie: drinking and partying but before the show has started filming its announced Snooki is pregnant.
This takes us to 'Snooki and Jwow' what once could of possibly been a repeat of Jersey Shore is now taken a left turn into a completely new direction that probably none would of predicted. The show starts off with both Snooki and Jwow discussing their plans to move in and also discussing it with their significant others. Once again there is funny narration from the girls and some humorous carry on whilst the two look at different apartments such as Snooki casually telling the estate agent that Jwow's on her period. The episode ends with Snooki announcing the news that shes pregnant and engaged.
Look the show isn't meant to be a brain challenging emmy award winning show its about two reality stars who you've either been watching the past few years or have read about living together and dealing with the fact that the once crazy party girl Snooki is now pregnant.
I predict some humorous episodes and feel that the Snooki and Jwow friendship will hold the show together.
Tormented (2009)
Pretty simple, you bully, you die!
This was released today in Ireland and I went with my girlfriend expecting what the trailer had called 'Skins meets Scream' Oh how they got it wrong. The film starred many familiar British faces such as April Pearson and Larissa Wilson from 'Skins', and Alex Pettyfer and Georgia King from 'Wildchid' However even though I knew these actors, the writing and development of these characters was quite outrageous. The main faults in this film is the characters, that they are portrayed in a bad light that it is impossible to care about them being in danger. The film also struggles to find the balance between being a comedy and a horror. A particular scene where one of the characters is faced with the horror of losing their hands is ruined by a ridiculous attempt to make it funny. There is also a harsh moral story to this film, the elements that some people go to make someone's life hell. In return if you bully, you will die.
Pretty harsh eh ?
Changeling (2008)
How long before you would lose hope ?
In Ireland this films trailers were kept to a minimum due to the current hype on the latest "Craze" , 'Twilight' populating our media.
I will admit i have seen a lot of unsatisfactory films of late. Reading a summary of this film , it sounded promising but thats usually why films fall for me it doesn't deliver on its promising first impression.
However this is a different kettle of fish , not only does it increase its promising prospects without the first few minutes but it insinuates a long lasting effect on your mind even after leaving the screen.
Jolie delivers an Oscar - Worthy performance one that she is sure to win. For Eastwood i believe this to be most definitely the right film to work on , all the pieces fell into the jigsaw perfectly.
Ill leave you with this thought , if your child went missing how long before you would lose hope ??
Twilight (2008)
Innocent and young " Buffy and Angel " Similarity
I was generally excited for this film. With the delay in the release of the new Harry Potter film a market niche was caused. This would not be filled easily it needed to target the same audience as the "Harry Potter " generation and to attract even a new audience. This is where twilights success has resulted in. Strangely this film reminded me of a younger " Buffy the vampire Slayer " due to perhaps the leads similarities to them. The story is even quite similar girl moves to new town and falls in love with vampire ; its the new Buffy and Angel. But in a way despite the sweet innocent love that is portrayed it works. Without the correct casting it would not of worked so well but casting Catherine Hardwicke and Robert Pattinson as the leads was incredibly clever. Both being not too known and not overly attractive they would create an instant likeness to them by the audience. It is to be noted also that the sets on location and off location are both beautiful but there's a special scene in which Edward plays the piano the lighting , the angle , the mood is just perfect. All in all this has been a success in Ireland and from what i've been reading not far off in other locations. I think its time to pick up the book and continue on ....
Prom Night (2008)
Not a classic but its a non- brainer.
With the original coming from the legendary era of horror the 80,s. The re-make was obviously not gonna reach the expectations of true horror fans but for the teenagers of today like myself it's a no- brainer. To put simply it gives you the eye candy ; Brittany Snow , the simple plot , the stereotypical characters and the obvious ending. Despite all the bad reviews about this film however it did make a lot in the box office just showing that the movie watching generation like the " Non - Brainer Films ". If your in the mood to sit back with your teenage Bf / Gf and make out during it without worrying your going to be behind then this is the film for you. If your a true horror fan steer clear this film otherwise i'll be expecting a bad review from you.
