Twin Peaks: The Return (2017)
Terrible
I can only agree with every other negative thing that's been said. The rating is worrying beyond the show. Do we have an epidemic of pretentious people or something? They want more of this pointless trash? If you think this is a good way to spend time, or good writing, you need to see a doctor or pop out of whatever delusional narcissistic bubble you're in. Get some air. Learnt to write stories and appreciate actual skill rather than pseudo-intellectual muck and quasi plot. By the way, I quite liked the first two seasons.
Meet the Applegates (1990)
Underrated
Giving a 10 for balance. Realistically I'd give a 7. It's pretty silly and light, but very tight, and knows what it is. All the characters have a simple, fun and direct journey. All the little plot elements (and there are more than the average amount) fit into the logic of the movie and work, whilst being paced well. Constantly entertaining and humorous dialogue. Very cartoon like characters. Very good entertainment for those who can just accept these types of movies.
The Last Yellow (1999)
Odd ball comedy
10 to make the score higher. Real score 7. It's very subtle movie on every level and involves some recognition of the world portrayed, or else the characters may be too bland. They do after all inhabit a boring world. I thought the dialogue was OK, despite people saying otherwise. It was natural and did the job. It provided a dead pan humour as lines were played straight. It did have space for more interesting plot and some twists and turns but the padding was OK. It was a little predictable and nothing new or interesting is to be found. The ending could have been better. Seems to split people down the middle. I've seen a lot worse. Mark Addy did a good job. I don't know why it wasn't more successful. Maybe after lock stock people seen this as an inferior version of that style.
Stranger Things (2016)
Mediocre Netflix Unoriginal Series
9? This is what happens when a culture of hype, trend and Netflix zombies rate things. Ratings no longer signify a good movie or show. They just shows what's trending. How did this crap ever get made? Did someone notice a bunch of online teens saying that they're 80s or that they wish they were 80s and Netflix decided to make a show on a Web trend? This whole show is just a spot the 80s game and it's boring after the first movie poster. It's inferior to every movie it takes from. The episodes and show itself don't stand apart or have an individual strength. At heart its more 90s then 80s with the boring Dawson's Creek type love story. But Netflix are catering for the teen girl binge viewer. The characters are awful and interact on only simple terms. Like the kids always bicker because that's what kids do. They go on adventures on crap bikes because the Goonie did therefore all kids in the 80s.The grieving mom is crazy but in the end right because that's what happens to characters in generic shows. The cool outsider listens to The Smiths even though they're not even out yet (year out.) I wonder if he'll get the girl??? That would be a surprise. The cop is disillusioned and then by the most basic character development he eventually won't be. Every plot in this show as well as the dialogue is predictable. The show obviously has plans to run a long time because it's so stretched out and slow. Nothing happens and then at the end something will to fool you into watching the next one. Watched by people who want to be part of a trend. Did I mention it's 80s? Well that makes it good. Most people watching this weren't even born in the 80s yet seem to judge it's authenticity. Horror? What horror? And that character 11 or whatever her name is. She just plays the generic alien learning human ways. E.g Ways? What's. ..ways? Love? What's. ...love? Christ almighty this show is trash.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Typical modern hype movie
Lacked everything that made the other Mad Max movies brilliant. No atmospheric cinematography just CGI and too much colour. No cleverly shot action with humour just generic action x10. No Mad Max just a grunting oath. The makeup was ridiculous as it attempted to be styled like a superhero movie so the kids could relate and like it (the demographic.) The bad guy was also a type of comic book creation because that's what kids like and they can cosplay easier. A water shortage yet was anyone really suffering the effects? Not really.Blood transfusions? Right. Why are people so muscular? Post-apocalyptic gyms? The plot? Least have one. Dialogue? Mostly grunts and garbage. Unbelievably predictable in every way. Not stimulating despite explosions and loud noises because it gets boring. 8.1 rating? Should be 1.8.Hype, Hollywood advertising, pretension, positive paid critic responses and the self-delusion of the viewer that they're seeing something good doesn't make a good movie. A good movie makes a good movie.
