Popcultured (2005)
Might just be the worst TV show in the history of the medium.
It truly boggles the mind how a series of such a glaring, utterly confounding lack of quality on pretty much every imaginable level ever made it to air. Because you'd think that at some point during the whole extensive process of casting, writing, designing, filming, editing, etc., some brave soul in an even moderately influential position at the network would have had the wisdom/wherewithal to just say,
"Wow, you know guys, I have this inescapable feeling that we might be officially making the worst thing ever here, and while I realize there will be some financial repercussions, we should just cut our losses and bury this monstrosity immediately and never utter another single word about it, ever. Fill its would-be time slot with 'Kids In The Hall' reruns and nobody will notice a thing." But no. Instead of anyone blessing the Canadian TV landscape with this burst of very apparent rational logic, the Comedy Network chose to give this "series" - term used loosely - what was undoubtedly a massively unwatched season (or was it two? If so, MY GOD.)
Is this an example of the dark downside of government-subsidized programming, or is it the Comedy Network's fault? After wincing my way through episode after episode of samples of their other "Original Programming" I'm leaning toward blaming the network. Fully. I mean, have you seen "Girls Will Be Girls"? "Keys To The VIP"? Seriously, whoever's responsible for giving the go-ahead to this succession of non-properties should just not be working in comedy. Period. They shouldn't even be in the same building.
Keys to the VIP (2006)
Douchebag TV
Though it pains me to some degree that I'm bothering to christen the comments board for this new series - mainly because I'd hate to give the false impression that there's actually any semblance of public interest in it - I feel compelled to throw in my chips on this one.
To put it simply, never before have I felt so persuaded to root for a TV show's swift and merciless cancellation based solely on the merit of its promo ads. And, in case you're wondering, I'm a dude.
Listen, Comedy Network: though your existing original programming is already, shall we politely say, of a 'questionable' quality (I'm looking at you, "Girls Will Be Girls") you have truly outdone yourselves on this one. Whoever green-lit this thing could not be further out of touch with what's cool right now.
Best of luck.
Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County (2004)
MTV's Laguna Beach and the Decline of the American Empire
This program could be an ingenious strategic weapon, were it created by terrorists to facilitate the eventual disintegration of the moral fabric of America.
"Laguna Beach" and its ugly sister show, "The Hills" comprise a layer of bile accumulated atop an age of media diarrhea that is severely damaging the values system of a generation of kids. The mere concept of delivering "fabricated reality" to a youth demographic before they are adequately media-literate and intellectually equipped to make such a critical distinction presents a set of truly frightening possibilities...and the fact that it's justified as mindless, harmless fun is arguably the most cynical and insidious part of it.
The fallout is that we're going to see a lot of severe depression and a marked lack of ambition in the forthcoming generation, when the crushing blow of reality takes hold - a reality in which their media-fed perceptions of automatic entitlement to celebrity and wealth are challenged.
Were I a parent, I would honestly consider putting a content filter on MTV so as to spare my kids the surgery-free frontal lobotomy provided by this type of content.
In fact, I would sooner buy my kids subscriptions to the Spice Channel than let them watch this crap.
Daisy Does America (2005)
The most painfully unfunny television show in the history of humanity.
I apologize for being blunt, but if you enjoy watching "Daisy Does America," you desperately need to get out more. Seriously - if this agonizingly untalented woman can be given her own show, you might as well give one to my mom, as well. She's middle-aged, too, and like the show's namesake, frequently embarrasses herself and others in her attempts to be funny.
**An important note regarding the principal reason for this show's blinding, stifling lack of quality:
While most people on here accuse "Daisy" of lifting its premise from "Da Ali G. Show", in actuality this is a shameless CARBON COPY of the very great "Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends" on BBC2, albeit stripped of the razor-sharp wit and profound social commentary. Oh, and subbing in a painful-to-watch host in place of Mr. Theroux himself. Rent the source material if you want to see this sort of thing done right.
Anyway, may it be canceled as quickly as it deserves.
