On Patrol: Live (2022)
Needs more lively and comedic host
With the right host, this show becomes the Johnny Carson of the 2020s, with families and friends gathered around to watch the ups and downs of police work. It just is so milk toast. Needs a bit more humor and sarcasm, and wit. The guests need to be celebrity guests or something and literally you have a ratings MACHINE. And it would be a net good for our society to have harmony around something so simple - brave officers and catching bad guys. I think this show could be so so SO much more than it is. It's a genre that's never going away, and the people that master it will have our hearts for good.
Lady Ballers (2023)
As an all access member
I wanted to like it. I get what they were going for, and it's worthy of praise coming from such a small studio with such a low budget. I hope this isn't the last in this genre from DW.
That said - wow. Not up to par of the classics it was marketed as. Airplane, Dodgeball, Blazing Saddles, Topic Thunder: it's none of those things. I think it could've been with some extra elbow grease and less confirmation bias in the studio.
The criticism that many Christian movies get is that they focus too much on the message and not on the core story and quality of the film. Same issue here. I get they had some quality limitations, but I wish they would've waited to really hone in the story and make sure the lines packed a punch.
Best parts are all the cameos. These are genuinely good and appreciated.
Not sure why we needed the subtle dominatrix thing. Just another example of something that made me cock my head sideways and ask, "Really? Necessary?"
Overall, I know I'll make some people mad for not absolutely loving it, but it is what it is. They want quality content? I'm happy to be the critic for the next future success. I'm aware I'm not the man in the arena, but I don't care.
The Creator (2023)
Visual FX are STUNNING. The story is CATASTROPHIC.
I was actually rooting for the "bad guys" - the US Army. From the beginning it is built on plot holes that are never answered and we are supposed to go along with unnamed assumptions such as robots having emotions but sometimes not, robots being harmful but sometimes not, or the main character having some unsaid need to betray his country because of a robotic kid that has powers that make appearances whenever convenient.
It could've been a masterpiece. It was a beautiful watch. The integration of vfx is masterclass. I was so tempted to leave early but the cinematography kept me in it. Which is why it is so so disappointing to have this flop. Mr Washington, please get yourself a new agent. You're so talented, but this was not the movie for you.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Cherish the art and horror
Is this the best movie ever made? Probably not. However, if this is not what the 10 button is used for, I don't know what is. It's a masterpiece. A love for cinema wrapped in a complex drama with acting that is superb throughout. From a technical aspect alone - cinematography, casting, acting, etc. - this deserves every star. Add in the complex flutter of emotions, the tact that Nolan applies throughout the entire story, and the layers of meaning that discuss a whole host of human endeavors and moral scruples, this move becomes what movies are all about. Hollywood should take note - we love THESE movies. Fund THESE movies.
Elvis (2022)
A true ballad to the life of Elvis
The movie has a very cartoony feel. You get engaged and for how long the movie is, you don't really start to notice it's been 2 and a half hours until the end. My one hiccup is Hanks. It's not his best work, but I don't think it's his fault. I just think he wasn't the best person for the role.
Butler is great. This is a movie that shows Elvis as he was.
What Is a Woman? (2022)
Honest
I can say it isn't perfect, but it's a documentary that at least tries to give the best people in this field of women and gender studies a platform to answer the question. I wish the crazy conservative stigma wasn't there because it is a documentary that does seek to address messages that are harming kids. Overall, he tried to let the people speak for themselves.
Extraction (2020)
Just another dark attempt for Netflix
I'm a fan of action movies and really intense movies. Netflix has made some great stuff and this isn't as bad as I make it seem. I just can't keep supporting Netflix making movies that are not just dark but incredibly evil. I mean throwing kids off the roof is just messed up. I know what they are trying to do and I understand the motive, but there has to be lines drawn I think.
