Oppenheimer (2023)
Choppy and Distracting Direction
I almost turned this movie off after the first 30 minutes. I couldn't stay focused due to the choppy timelines going back and forth. It feels rushed but I think that's the point to give an air of intensity. Another reviewer mentioned the music being loud and overbearing and I agree! The music was also distracting and in some scenes totally unnecessary.
I really felt lost during points of the movie, if you blink you'll miss something for sure. I don't plan on watching it again so I'll most likely watch a few documentaries about Oppenheimer to get more understanding of the man and his devastating work.
The Curse (2023)
Brilliant, Demented or Both?
I'm trying to figure out if this show is brilliant or demented, I think it is both! This is such a dark, cringy series it's on another level. Every character down to the children are just awful people. One reviewer wanted more back story of the peripheral characters but I don't think we could handle that!
This show is the true definition of "watching a train wreck". You don't want to look but you can't stop yourself from watching just to see what happens next. The acting is superb and the behind the scenes moments of a "reality show" are mind blowing. That being said, you still have to get past the cringe moments and there are alot! To appreciate the genius behind the writing.
The ending is truly disturbing and it sticks with you even if you're not in love with the characters. Any show that stays with you days after watching must be genius OR is it so over the top unbelievable your mind can't process it? You decide...
Leave the World Behind (2023)
Wow! So many layers
This is definitely a slow burn thriller. Initially, for the first 15 minutes it almost lost me. It starts as the typical upper class family taking a vacation, their life seems perfect. But slowly and methodically the intensity of the movie escalates with each scene.
I'm not a Julia Roberts fan but she won me over with this movie. She played her role perfectly. Everyone acted extremely well and they kept my attention the whole time. This movie has lots of layers. It really makes you think in terms of survival, end times, and how societies could break down in a crisis. I might actually stock up on some items. Just like we are seeing in real time in several countries throughout the world, you never know what might happen!
I really enjoyed the ending but wish the movie did not end there. It could make an excellent series, hint, hint!
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
No surprises but a fun watch!
I'm not sure I understand the negative reviews, I mean it is John Wick and it is a franchise for God's sake. There are no surprises in this movie, pretty much the same storyline and the same action. But.... it's fun and entertaining. This movie doesn't take itself too seriously. And the blind guy was hilarious!
People who give this a low rating because they thought it was boring or the same storyline need to stick with Oscar winners and not action movies that are franchises. Very few can keep you entertained after the first 2 or 3. Even Mission Impossible struggled a little. This movie is worth a weekend watch.
Reptile (2023)
90's Style Crime Thriller
I truly enjoyed this movie, it kept me guessing almost the entire time. You do figure it out towards the middle to end. The characters were very well developed and the relationship between the main character and his wife made me envious lol.
This movie reminded me of the old school '90s style crime Thrillers like Internal Affairs from back in the day. If you've never seen it it's really good with Richard Gere and one of the Baldwin brothers.
I gave it a 9 to help with the ratings since I really think it's a good movie and should be higher than a 6.9. Benicio del Toro is such an intense actor and his eyes are so menacing. But this role really suited him and it was a little different from his past characters. It's a good watch!
No One Will Save You (2023)
Reminds me of Signs but not really
This movie is in the footsteps of M. Night Shyamalan. Even down to the old house in the woods. The writing isn't as in depth as Signs though.
The storyline was not realistic, not that alien movies are reality. Although James Webb Telescope and UAP reports has me believing we aren't the only beings in the entire universe.
Anyway, the movie wants you to have sympathy for the main character but it's hard to do that. She's not a likable person and she must be the luckiest chick on planet earth! The main character was UNBELIEVABLY lucky. She manages to get out of every jam the whole movie! All together it's a strange and not so great movie but if you have time to waist go for it.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
My Only Regret!!
My only regret with watching this movie is not seeing it in 3-D. I think it would have been spectacular just like the first one. I don't know why there are so many negative reviews about the storyline.
This story was beautiful and it had meaning! Maybe it was a little too long but so what it was entertaining all the way through.
People are so interested in blood, guts and action all the time they forget to just enjoy the movie for what it is. I'm going to make an effort to see this in 3D at some point so I can enjoy the full effects of the movie. Can't wait for the next one, I'll be first in the IMAX theater to see it!!
Missing (2023)
WOW, just WOW!
I really did not expect all the twists and turns that came from this movie. It is a must watch if you're a psychological thriller fan. Truly enjoyed the NON- techno savvy mom, reminds me of myself lol.
All of the acting was on point no issues with that. There were a few parts where I was a little lost with all of the switching back-and-forth from the screens. But that's probably just my age telling on me.
Overall. I enjoyed the entire vibe of video and technology and all of the tracking apps. Which can be terrifying but extremely useful when needed! This movie is well worth your time just watch it and enjoy!
Barbarians (2021)
Why the Hate for this Movie??
I enjoyed this movie, it had all the elements of a thriller. Plot build up, intense scenes, jump scares, climax then the big reveal. Although you can figure out the twist halfway through, it was still an entertaining movie.
Some people are confused about the fox scenes, I won't spoil it for folks but it was obvious to me why it was there and whose flaws it was there to reveal
Ignore the negative reviews and watch it for yourself. I'm coming to the conclusion with IMDB ratings, go with your gut, if you want to watch it, do that! Don't let the negative reviews hinder you from seeing a great movie!!
Enjoy!
Black Adam (2022)
Black Adam II Please!!
I'm not sure where all the bad reviews are coming from on this movie. But I thought it was great! All of the characters were well developed and seeing The Rock play villain/hero was amazing.
The back story could have been more in depth but maybe they are saving more details in the sequels and hopefully there will be more or even a prequel with more storyline!!
The laughs were on point and the plot made sense. There is alot of violence in the movie but no more than any other action packed movies out there. Its not bloody or gory though.
I thoroughly enjoyed Black Adam, just watch it and ignore the bad reviews.
Hellraiser (2022)
Cenobytes a big Nope!
This movie would have been a whole lot better if the cenobytes actually looked scary and not fake! They looked more like Cinnabons! They literally looked like they were wearing costumes and not good ones either.
I'm very disappointed in all of them especially the teeth chatter one that freaked me out when I was younger. I wish there was more of the backstory about the creatures and what they want and why the exist... pleasure from pain.
With all of the technology and CGI these days how could they produce such low quality creatures and effects. I'm going to watch the original to erase the memory of this remake.
The Yellow Wallpaper (2021)
Not a Horror Movie, Psychological Drama
I'm not sure why this is rated as a horror movie because it's really not. It's more of a psychological drama. Basically it's a woman who is dealing with postpartum depression and all of the "Horrors" that go along with it.
I'm very blessed that I never experienced post-partum but I know plenty of women do and it seems to be a horrifying situation.
I could relate to the feelings of anxiety and stress that go along with being a parent and all of the responsibilities.
Never downplay a person's mental health, never just appease them as in this movie. Find out what's really happening and get them help!!
I think that is the moral of this movie.
The Humans (2021)
The Humans Delivered!
I truly enjoyed this movie, it was well worth the wait since I watched it during a free watchathon.
I've never been an Amy Schumer fan but I see why people are. All of the actors in this movie even the elderly Momo who only said gibberish was excellent!!
Totally believable family dynamics, with snide remarks in between. You know how we throw little jabs at family members with love but still kind of mean-spirited.
The visuals and the sound effects were the most important theatrical elements of the film. Without them it would be an ok film but with them it's almost perfect.
I'm going to address the low ratings. Just because a movie says horror or thriller, doesn't always mean it's going to have a lot of blood, guts and gore.
The jumpscares and visuals in this movie were enough to make me believe it fits in the horror category or at least the psychological thriller category. It put me in the mind of The Others.
So if you're expecting blood, guts and gore you might want to pass on this one. But if you're expecting great acting with jump scares and great visuals for a limited set and a sense of eeriness overall definitely watch this one!
I used subtitles due to the actors talking over each other or talking in the background.
Death on the Nile (2022)
Much better then expected!
I'm not sure what I thought this movie was. I kind of thought it would be a comedy, mystery. But it's definitely more than that and very engaging, it kept me on my toes the whole time.
I assumed who the villain was but it had a couple of twists along the way. Very good watch! Really enjoyed Hercule Poirot character the actor was excellent and meaningful.
Watch it, you'll enjoy this!
Master (2022)
Ignore low ratings watch for yourself
I enjoyed this movie thoroughly. It has all of the elements of a great thriller with meaning and purpose.
Read the review of ebeckstr-1 dated 3/20/22 it says it all and more eloquently than I could ever say it.
Warrior (2011)
I shouted and cried
Any movie that makes me shout and cry is a solid 10 period! Great fight movie with heart... watch it and enjoy every minute.
Actors should all get a nomination even the extras!
The Harder They Fall (2021)
And Fall They Did!!
This was a fantastic modern-day Western. I'm not going to sit here and say it was due to the predominantly black cast or predominately whatever cast. It was just an all-around great western! Acting, music, theme we're on point and I rated it a 9 to once again counter the negative scores on IMDB when it's an all black movie! Watch it and enjoy!!
Black as Night (2021)
Entertainment w/ some messaging..
Once again I feel compelled to give a movie a higher rating than I normally would just to balance out the negative ones. For some reason when it's an all-black cast people lowball the ratings it's really shameful! No, the movie is not Nosfaratu but it's not the worst vampire flick I've ever seen. The acting was fine, the only issue I had with the vampires were their eyes, could have been better. Storyline, plot and messaging was on point. Watch it for what it is....entertainment.
Them (2021)
Look its Them not us!!
This series was truly something to behold! I don't even know where to begin to unpack the themes of Them. I was thinking about Them long after I finished watching it even down to the creepy what you gonna do song by the Bojangles guy. It's still in my head!
I think there are three themes 1. A marriage in trouble 2. Racial societal issues, past and present. 3. Supernatural forces?? Yeah, the third part really doesn't fit in with this series at all. If they had left out the Supernatural it would be much better and easier to digest. Instead of using the Supernatural ghost they could have had flashbacks to previous eras. It would have had the same effect and would have been easier to follow. It was still a really good watch and had some historical perspective as well. So like I said go in with an open mind and you should enjoy the series and hopefully get a little bit of a black families perspective out of it as well. I can say this last part because I'm black and I can relate to some of the racial references throughout Them. Enjoy!
Without Remorse (2021)
Action packed movie with a message!
Seeing that I've never read a Tom Clancy novel in my life I don't have anything to compare this movie to. The fact that it's getting such low reviews is really surprising but I guess that's because people are comparing it to a book. With no knowledge of the book I think this is a great action packed thriller with twists and turns to boot. Pretty good acting too!!
Just like all of the other espionage spy thrillers this one keeps you engaged the entire time! It also has a message about unity! I hope this turns into a series of future movies!
Evil Eye (2020)
No, not a horror.. but a great movie!
I gave this movie a 9 to counter all of the negative reviews. But I also gave it a 9 because it's a really good movie! I enjoyed every minute of it. I'm a mom and I completely get this movie, it's deep on so many levels! Loved the ending!
