Oscar for Andrew
22 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
For those that know the broadway play Rent. This movie is about the writer Jonathan Larson. He was coming within a week of his 30th birthday and was scared that his creative juices for musicals will never come, he needed to write one song to complete the masterpiece he had been working on for 8 years. All of his idols already had their big hit by the time they reach that age. The lead is played by Andrew Garfield (who learned how to sing for this role.) (Also to fill out the cast even for little spots you have Judith Light, Vanessa Hudgens, Bradley Whitfield, Richard Kind, and many more. Some spoilers in this review.

They go an interesting route with this story. They have Jonathan tell the story of his week leading up to his 30th birthday as a play (Which is a play within a play). During that week, it is all about finding that last song that he has been trying to write forever. While he is trying to find his muse, he doesn't realize that he is ignoring his friends and girlfriend while he finds this answer. All who are going through their own problems. But his friends and girlfriend try to stick by his side as long as they can. Each musical number of the movie you can tell has a heart behind it. During one scene I was able to spot Phylicia Rashad (Cosby Show) as a background singer in this movie. It was good to see her working again.

Every actor has a movie that stands apart from the rest of their work. For Andrew, this is it for me. Not only did he engulf the role of Jonathan but every song he sang felt that it was coming from his mind. The time for the showcase finally comes and the song is done. He is on cloud nine, everyone shows up and they seem to all love it. Until he agents say that all the producers in the audience can't wait for the next play he writes. But he does get a voice message from one of his idols saying to not hang his head it was a great play and would like to meet up with him. While he was crushed and excited he went to go check on his loved ones he has ignored, they both have big news. They wanted to tell him but he didn't want to listen. Everything he does in his mind is about music. He once said he wrote a song about sugar. So after he got the news he goes for a walk and finds this piano in the middle of the bowel in central park and does a remarkable last number. Finally comes Sunday, the day of his birthday his friends ask him what is next. He then in a cool way references the play we all are watching. And while they finish in the play you see his agent giving her approval on what he did next. And all the loved ones were there to support him. Standing ovation and scene.

Now that streaming services qualify for the Oscars I can see Andrew getting nominated for this role. It was a well-rounded movie. After he did the play Tic Tic Boom which was the play within a play I was talking about. He actually had the script put away for Rent and gave that one another try. That play at the time went on to being the longest-running play on broadway. But he actually had passed away the day before the first showing of Rent.

We can never know how much time we have left in this world. But I will look at this man Jonathan in a different light. He just wanted to be remembered for what he did and loved. Only to pass on before his work really took off.
