The Secret Scripture (2016)
Insufferable sadness
Spoiler!! This movie is really underrated, firstly. The time is initially set in the present. It is the tragic story of Rose, an elderly Irish woman who was wrongly committed to a mental hospital for forty years after being accused of killing her baby in 1942. She has been robbed of her life and her memories due to the unbearable abuse she received from the head nurse and the doctor. A psychiatrist named Stephan visits Rose at the request of the Catholic Church to evaluate Rose, to determine whether she should be released or remain hospitalized. He is also in the village to sell his parent's house. The hospital is being demolished. Dr Stephan finds Rose's diary which is written inside the pages of a Bible. Dr Stephen reads what Rose has written. It is the story of her life, beginning with her telling about her younger self always waiting for her husband to return, but unbeknownst to Rose was killed shortly after they married. She calls for her baby, who she still insists she did not kill. Dr Stephen discovers that Rose's baby was born the same year and date as Stephen was. Stephen, unknowingly, was adopted as a newborn baby. He returns to his family home to look for his birth certificate. He finds a sealed envelope from his dad, now dead, that tells Stephen he was adopted. He also finds something else. He returns to Rose, and asks her to come with him. She happily goes with Stephen, and they go to Stephen's parent's house. She says it is beautiful. He tells Rose that she is (finally) home.
This movie is one of the saddest movies I've ever seen. I cried practically all the way through the movie.
The Salon (2005)
Underrated - The Salon is wonderful!
The Salon is a movie not to be missed. A beauty shop owner is about to lose her well established salon to a big law firm. In the meantime you get to know the fantastic cast of characters working in the shop and nearby. It gives the audience a real idea of what a black owned and employed shop is like. I laughed and cried and got very attached to the employees. The movie is worth celebrating! The black history adds pride and richness to the story.
