Black Mirror: Mazey Day (2023)
Peak Paparazzi without the tech dystopia
This episode explores a time of peak paparazzi in 2005 ish without the usual future tech dystopia theme. One of paps questions the morality of her profession whilst we the viewer question the black mirror twist. The clues are there and the finale gets there and packs a punch.
Mazey Day, is not subtle and the message is clear around the attitudes and methods of the paparazzi profession. Mazay Day is the troubled actress (Clara Rugaard) in hiding, hunted down by paparazzi with little care for their subjects.
Zazie Beetz plays Bo, the photographer and central character, who questions the ethics of the profession whilst still finding the big bucks on offer too tempting.
A short runtime for a Black Mirror episode at 40 minutes long, this is more an entertaining ride with a fair bit of nostalgia along the way, without having to think too hard. This is not your usual Black Mirroresque future weirdness.
You vs. Wild (2019)
Great family TV. The kids will love it!
It's a lot of fun with survival learning and healthy debate across young and old about which survival choice to make.
Yes he is not really in a life or death danger and that's because he is filming a tv show. Yes it's staged but who cares? It's interactive, it's educational and it's good entertainment that involves family discussion and debate.
Good job Bear.
Who Is America? (2018)
The satire continues with the low ball reviews here
Bernie gets it. The ex ABC news anchor gets it. These are the slow burners. The antidote to the rest of interview targets in episode 1 and 2.
The others get absolutely nailed by the brilliant Sasha. A whole heap of planning must go into these set-up's but the ludicrous subject matter just gets these interviewees so excited. It seems increadulous. The blinkers are on and the gloves are off.
Satire is not about laugh out loud funny. This is an indictment of a part of America that cannot help themselves.
Be smart. Be like Bernie.
