After Earth (2013)
Family cinematography
This film made for family entertainment is about the father son relationship in a boy scout military setting. It is also a mentor disciple relationship which brings the message of hope and wisdom. I think it's wonderful. The film's 30min are pretty slow, the pacing is nice, but the film is so beautiful to watch, nice shots! Ups: cinematography is Top! Background design en nature scenes, Top! After the slow 30min, very exciting. Earth is created nicely. The chase scenes with the CGI; Big Eagle bird, Big Cats, baboons and Monster attack are unforgettable well done. Acting is a bit childish but good. Directing is nice, except for a scene or some character flaws, I find it not important.
The downside is: The dialogue writing is not good at all, Kitai is a pretty serious lead which makes the film a serious note. Cypher (played by Will Smith, Kitai's dad and mentor) is too serious , almost a Denzel Washington look. I am used to Will as a tough bloke with great humour, but this movie is not funny at all. The Direction has a small problem, why is The Big Bird Eagle issue not explained? She has a dilemma with the attack from the climbing Big cats. The final conclusion of the story could be better, but this movie is so beautiful to watch - Mr Dir Shyamalan must be fascinated by National Geographic. I loved it! 8-10!
The Poet (2007)
In despite of some flaws a good cinema film.
I liked the storytelling in this film. Also the plot twists were pleasant and although the end was predictable the storyline is captivating. The romance was realistic, but sometimes a little exaggerated. Rachel's story should be more developed.
The actors were good, the decor was brilliant and the cinematography also.
The flaws I've seen so far: Time errors? No way you can get a baby that fast. Factual error? In this movie some scenes go by too quickly without a good transition of time. Revealing mistakes: Crew equipment and mike visible in at least 3 shots.
In despite of some flaws a good cinema film.
Planet B-Boy (2007)
those guys made a career out of their dream
In this fabulous edited documentary, Filmmaker Benson Lee follows five groups of young guys who participate to an international break-dance competition. The well oriented interviews are in parallel story and video editing with the judges, some classic images from history in dance and Olympics, participants, their practices and at last the final championship competition, Battle of the Year.
The judges do a swell job by wonderfully explaining the history and diverse dance styles of five different countries / cultures.
The documentary maker follows the b-boys from the US, South-Korea, Japan and France. Every conversation goes in parallel montage with the family member's point of view. This is where I got a great feeling and depth about the dancers background. This film has so much more to offer than a bunch of well edited dance scenes. Of course the moves of those guys are breathtaking. Each one of them, in a group or in separated, has an interesting break-dance style. Amazing that they were not professionals before, but inspired by them (acrobats, James Brown, Olympic games, etc.) Not that important to the impressive storyline but Benson Lee does not show the dance movements more profound. Many of the dance moves are good, but sometimes the video is too fast edited for the screen to follow it easily without any interruption of a sudden interview. This film shows also the team playing character. Al the five cultures come together at a point of friendship. It gives you the feeling of it's not about winning, for certain not for the prize money, but being together. They made a cause: "those guys made a career out of their dream".
I can conclude that when people enjoy their fantastic dream, whatever it is. You can eventually make a job out of it and realize that dreaming isn't some floating idea, but a not yet existing fact of your identity. It's you who needs to find out what your purpose in the future is. Giving up is not an option.
8,5 out of 10.
Angels in the Dust (2007)
VERY touching, the story is to be seen through the eyes of some special South African children.
VERY touching, the disturbing story is to be seen and understood through the eyes of not 1 but more than 10 special South African children. Amazing, outstanding documentary. This one should win many prizes. Fact: A child's story is more captive.
10 out of 10 for a touching and inspiring point of view.
If I understood the charts well, in South Africa alone, six million people, adults and children are infected by AIDS. Still the government does quite little to nothing about it.
Angels in the Dust is a story of hope and healing in the face of a crisis that makes you lose confidence. Although you can't because nothing should make you feel it's the end of the world, unless you let the situation master you. What matters is what you can do is finding out who or what you are.
AIDS is affecting thousands of children leaving them orphaned, with no adults to raise them. There is a world with lots of children with no parents who want to be rescued or helped. Marion Cloete does an outstanding job in revealing this crisis from the local Children's hearts. There is a great storytelling about that special life of those children how they live. What I found so special about this docu is the reality of NON-fictional emotional face mimics and body language for the happy and the sad moments. There are a lot of documentaries out there about African poverty or violence for surviving but this one isn't really about poverty. It's about the healing by taking care of the children that are being "reparented" by Marion at Botshabelo. So this movie is to be concluded as a resolution in process to solve and after time will tell, to save and make a better future. There is also a glimpse of a resolution at the end.
This story goes along with a therapist, her husband and their three daughters. Like very few people in that area, they stand up consequentially and offer help by being there every day. An extraordinary village and school that provides shelter, food, and education to more than 550 South African children. The storytelling is absolutely compelling you to watch this interesting captioned situation.
Interesting comparison: "a dramatic parallel story to orphaned elephants of Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa".
I felt that this film asked me what I can do about it. What the Western world can do about it except showing the sad captive images on screen and ask for some small donations. It made me think and maybe we all should start to think about a resolution before this problem outgrows us. This movie is actually about compassion, if you don't have any, don't watch.
Before Sunset (2004)
the development on spontaneity is making' characters
Emotion, that's what's all about. Love? Maybe, but the best thing about it is, that we don't get the feeling' that they truly are in love. It's like a continuously research. This script is thought through. The dialog subjects are philosophical. I thought at the beginning: "I'll be ending up seeing 2 kissing'& hugging' people", but no way. It's the simplicity of a sudden friendship, the development on spontaneity is making' characters. The development of these characters are good, it's a joy seeing them, 'cause Jesse en Celine together match the character dialog, the subjects in the story. When they're sad or happy, the spectator's mood changes depending on their aura.
An action movie is much easier than this, but this is pure dialog, not even a psychological game play. The dialog is fluently and it changes believable. I think that the spectator either feels identified with the character or projected.
People who hate sentimental love stories, sure would have hated this too. Some may think of it as a naive storyline, but I think this movie has a realistic feeling: "cherish your partner"! Love life, don't anger it. Anger leads to disappointment and you don't wanna be disappointed, do ya?
I loved the last scene it stops where it needs to... only, I felt like I was left where I don't wanna be left from. 9 out of 10
