Hemlock Grove (2013)
A series that lost it's heart
I started watching Hemlock grove ten years after the first season came out. I was perplexed that I haven't heard about it before since I've enjoyed similar productions from that time (such as supernatural, TWD, American horror story, teen wolf) and especially because it was so good!!
The series has an originality which makes it really interesting. The plot is very mysterious and you don't understand everything at once, which I enjoyed- it's fun not to have everything laid out for you, guessing the characters back story and be surprised where the story takes you.
The main characters are two high school outsiders who are hard not to like. One rich boy with low self esteem, brought up in family with some serious toxic relationships - Roman Godfrey. The other one, Peter Rumancek, a charming 17-year old Romani boy, secretly a werewolf who just moved into the town with his loving mother.
It's a real thrill seeing the friendship grow between the boys, it's stated that neither of them have had a real friend before. They becomes partners in crime against the dangerous werewolf that's terrorizing the town, with their common goal to protect the girl Letha.
Some spoilers ahead! >>
But in the last episode, everything breaks- someone dies, leaving everyone devastated. I mean, everything that has been built up in the first season falls apart- the friendships, the victories, the fighting spirit. The next season is just someone trying to mend all the peaces together and fails miserably. The new "love interest" is never loveabel, the two boys are never as charming as they once where and the whole thing is just a s*** storm.
Why did they kill that character? Yes, a series must contain sad points and hardships but they should come in small parts, in turns. In second season, can't say for the third because I don't bother watching it, everyone is sad and miserable. The series lost the love, the heart and also me as a viewer :(
Interview with the Vampire (2022)
Favorite novel turned into series!
The book is one of my favorite novels therefore I was really exited for this adaption. My excitement was somewhat damped when I saw how much they changed from the original story. (Louis is a pimp..? Claudia is a teenager?! Lestat is capable of loving?!!!)
Anyway I watched the show and tried my best to enjoy the ride for what it was rather than what is wasn't. And a lot of the time I actually really liked it!
Some of the changes were quite interesting and gave the story some (perhaps well needed) fresh air. One of the main changes of course giving Louis an African American background and the whole business-part gave the character more depth and made the story more intriguing. I liked some parts about what they did to Lestat, speaking french half of the time resonates well with his chaotic nature! At some points I did find him a bit softer than a cold blooded killer should be.
Claudia being a teenager- I get why they logistically made that choice, a child shouldn't play a murderer and especially not this gruesome kind. But it does takes away a bit of her supposed pain of being "stuck in the body of a child", she is still taller than a little person and can travel on her own. Sorry - now I compare it to the novel- better stop.
However the acting was great by all parts! I can really recommend watching interviews with the main actors Sam Raid and Jacob Anderson on Youtube- their chemistry is wonderful! It's also obvious that both of them worked hard during the role-finding process, they've read the books and have become quite proud & protective of their characters. My likeness for the show also grew as I listened to a podcast by AMC where a lot of the main crew is interviewed. The story of each episode is discussed, explored and explained. It is a story worth doing a deep dive in!
Bottom line, I overall enjoyed the watch and can't wait for season two (and three..?) In the mean time, I think I will reread the books...:)
American History X (1998)
Unforgettable film!
Where should I begin? This movie is beyond borders. First of all is the portraying of two brothers and their path in finding identity. The oldest brother, Derek, finds home in the local nazi-gang and Danny is soon to follow. This is implied in a very nice way and as a viewer you never really question why.
The second treasure in this movie is everything we learn about group-identity. After watching, you will understand so much better why people join the nazis. The whole movie is very thought-out by the writers and in my psychology-course we have analysed it in many ways. We have for example talked about why the mother doesn't argue against the boys behavior and how the nazi-group works as a "home".
And then there is all the rest camerawork, acting...down to costume it's all absolutely great. The only reason why I don't give it a ten is that I sometimes think it's a little bit too violent. I understand why the writers have chosen to contain all the terror but why does it need to be so brutal and outspoken?
