Pashupati Prasad 2 Bhasme Don (2023)
A spinoff solely to make money on the success of an established hit.
I watched this movie in the USA, and as someone who thoroughly enjoyed and rated Pashupati Prasad, I can't help but express my immense disappointment with this spinoff. To both the writer and director, Khagendra dai and Dipendra dai, I expected more, and to say I feel let down is an understatement.
It feels like the two decided to cash in on the success of Pashupati Prasad without putting in the effort to deliver a compelling story. The protagonist's mission seems to come out of nowhere, lacking the depth and engagement that made Pashupati Prasad so captivating. The first half of the movie moves at a sluggish pace, reminiscent of a bus journey from Kathmandu to Muglin during a traffic jam-slow and with no real progress.
As the film unfolds, the protagonist's unusual voice becomes not only tiresome but also irritating. The storyline itself is loose, progressing without a clear purpose, almost as if it's moving for the sake of moving - Basme Don's motive would have been achieved so easily. The only silver lining is the character portrayed by Swastima. Even the ending feels like a half-hearted attempt, as if they're saying, "If this works, we'll just make another one and earn some more money."
As a fan, I expected more from Khagendra dai and Dipendra dai, and unfortunately, this spinoff falls significantly short of the expectations set by all your previous works. I will now be skeptical and do more research the next time your film releases.
14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible (2021)
Human Might is Incredible
I had listened to Nims on various podcasts previously and was aware of this enormous undertaking he had achieved; however, I was taken aback to learn him giving up on his half a million dollar pension and remortgaging his house for his project. Throughout the movie, I felt belittle as I watched him and his team doing something I do not even dare to imagine. I even lifted some extra pounds at the gym the next morning I watched this documentation. Jokes aside, Its truly amazing what a human body can achieve when pushed to its physical and mental limit, with proper training, diet, and most importantly determination.
The movie has beautiful shots of shimmering mountains and beautiful landscapes of Nepal. Nims definitely has a different kind of dopamine circuit running in his body. I can only imagine what his wife, mother, and dear ones must have gone through while he was out there in these mountains. The best thing about the movie is the ode to Sherpas of Nepal, who risk their life everyday for bread and butter, without whom summiting 8,000-meter peaks would be impossible.
