Star Trek: Discovery: The Galactic Barrier (2022)
Dammit, Jim DO Something!
That's what I hear in my head. Bones demanding that Cpt. James T. Kirk DO SOMETHING...anything...to turn things around. This is more about the season than this particular episode. I do enjoy the characters but they're not DOING anything. They're certainly not doing enough. This is DISCOVERY yet they aren't really doing that so much as they're discovering how much baggage they're all carrying around from the past to the future. If they want to "find themselves" or do "team building exercises," then they should go back to the Academy and join one of Tilly's training classes. Otherwise, Michael needs to man up, pull up her big girl panties and LEAD her crew. Mooning over a man is something you do in your quarters, not on the ship's bridge in front of your entire crew!
Adira is an angsty teenager on a ship full of adults, with a synth replica of their love interest. He likes me/He doesn't like me. *eyeroll* We get it. Bring on some other teens/young adults so their story isn't so annoyingly obnoxious to grown folks watching. Adira and Gray need to step up into their new respective roles or step off. It's tiresome. FYI, this is not about they/them, etc so don't come for over it. I don't give two hoots and a tinker's damn about who they love or who they are.
The whole damn ship's crew is in need of some major counseling sessions with Deanna Troi, even Culber needs this. Maybe especially Culber. There's no discipline on this ship because the Captain has none. She's as much of a loose cannon/wild card as Tarka. The bickering between the crew members over the best course of action and why it should be one way vs another exemplifies exactly why Star Fleet demands Duty First among their members. Tighten up this ship and it's crew.
Now get out there and DISCOVER something!
Cloud Atlas (2012)
EXcellent Cast, Great Story, Crap Presentaton
Cloud Atlas was difficult to follow and very confusing. The story is good - IF - you can follow it without getting lost. I had trouble with it but got the gist of most of it. You watch part of a story then you get someone else's story set in a different era and it keeps jumping around like that the whole movie. I really wouldn't recommend it, unfortunately. Maybe if it had been filmed so we could see the story progress in a more natural timeline instead of the back and forth format, then I might consider it time well spent but not in its current mishmash of flashbacks and flashforwards.
Uncharted: Live Action Fan Film (2018)
Just Enough to Make Me Mad!
Fire up the Kickstarter because I'm so IN! All this beautiful short film did was tick me off because there wasn't MORE! Don't know why this hasn't been made into a full length movie or a Netflix series yet but someone somewhere is slacking BIG TIME!
Nathan Fillion had Drake down to perfection and Lang as Sully was brilliant! All the casting choices were excellent and I REALLY wanted to see what happened next. So, whoever's in charge, get on this and make it happen! Strike while the iron is HOT and all that because you're adoring fans are waiting. Impatiently, I might add.
Mythica: A Quest for Heroes (2014)
Seen Better, Seen Worse
I really wanted this to be a GOOD movie. It was written and directed by a woman and stars a woman questing for adventure. What I got was MEH. I was disappointed that it didn't live up to my expectations for overall enjoyment. The thief, Dagen, tries too hard to be a Casanova, Teela, the priestess, is a bit too rote in spouting off rhetoric about her goddess, Thane, the muscle in this band of misfits, just wants to get the girl (Teela) and settle down; while Marek, the mage/conjurer, has good intentions, her results can sometimes leave a lot to be desired. She does manage to come through in a pinch, though.
One obvious, to me anyway, distraction was the nose prosthetic on the dwarf behind the bar. I supposed I've watched too much Face Off because I could see the glue along the edges - on the left side when he's facing camera - and it's also lifted along curve of his nostril. Other things that got in the way were the lack of drama and suspense in the fight scenes. I never felt like any of them were in real danger of dying, no sense of urgency, all very one note. Marek is the most likable fo the bunch but seems a tad bit too excited - naive maybe - about going on dangerous adventures. I wanted to be drawn into the story and really care about the characters but it never happened. I wanted to believe that what they were doing was important and I needed to feel the urgency of it all but I didn't. It fell flat for me because they didn't really make me believe any of it. E for effort but they definitely fell short on the excellence part.
