The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Fun Time for the Family! Simple.
I'm not sure what there is to dislike or downgrade this film on.... For me there's nothing, I've rated it 10/10 for sheer fun and entertainment!
Do yourself a favour and dodge the "click bait" reviews that are moaning about things and watch it for yourself! Great fun for the family, simple.
It gave my kids everything they could have wanted, and there were fun references to games and things from when I was a kid which was all great.
The characters were fun, voice acting fine, music fine, it looked super colourful and it moved from scene to scene at a good pace.
We saw it at the local Odeon at 4pm and it was busy. All in all, recommended!
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Me and our kids love this! Why all the negativity??
Sometimes I feel like I've no-clipped into a Backrooms style alternate universe when reading reviews of frankly any franchise these days. Because they're all so negative and I just can't imagine being so devoid of fun!
It's not that I don't see the problems that others have pointed out, it's just that for me personally they are daft little things that yeah could have been done a little better but that doesn't overall detract from my enjoyment of it - whereas for many others they are HUGE things that are ruining the show.
There's nothing woke in here, or not that I can see anyway (and I'm your fairly typical middle aged white guy in case you're wondering).
Yes, the chase scenes in episode 1 & 2 were a bit daft, but Star Wars (like Indiana Jones) has always allowed campy chase scenes.
Yes, we spend zero time with Wade in episode 4 so I honestly didn't care too much that he died either.
Yes, I can see how people would be annoyed by Reva (I actually like her character) but it's nice to add some fresh talent to the roster. I'm enjoying seeing her operate on screen.
Also, Vader in Episode 3... He is clearly DELIBERATELY standing back and watching them scramble to pull Kenobi out. He's not "stuck and confused by the fire", yes he could just walk around it or douse the flames with the force or do anything but he's choosing to just watch on.
The fight scene - we've got a Kenobi who hasn't used the force, picked up a sabre or likely done any training at all in 10yrs who by the way is suffering from PTSD and has just learned that Anakin is alive a day ago and the dude is now here wanting to fight him. You see as the fight goes on, Kenobi doesn't want to fight, Vader realises quickly just how diminished Kenobi is and takes to fighting him one-handed. It's a joke now, he's just throwing Kenobi around like a rag doll. But this is all deliberate and is a gritty realistic interpretation of what would likely go down.
Overall. There's nothing in here to hate, or that is so bad that it should ruin your enjoyment of the story being told. There's a few plot holes and I'd like to have seen more Hayden Christensen (unmasked Vader), but again it's not ruining my enjoyment of it.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Excellent - Go see it!
I'll keep my review of the movie brief and fairly spoiler free! It's wonderful. Characters, effects, emotional and funny scenes, classic MCU. If you're worried about whether Andrew or Tobey will be in it and how the film will treat them, don't be concerned on either front (they don't do anything daft like kill them off). Are there plot holes? Yeah a few. The ending is going to take some wrapping my head around, but I'm not going to let it detract from enjoying the film and looking forward to what is coming up next!
Ok... Time to review the reviewers.
Peter as a character is fine, he's not been "woke-ified", "woke'd" or whatever the term is. I don't know where where that has come from but it's so sad that people can't drop their political/sociological ideologies for 3hrs to just enjoy a film.
A few people (not many) have said they walked out. Anyone saying that definitely went in with the mindset that unless it went exactly to their liking that they were going to walk out and make a show of it, then come on here and write about how they walked out. Well done, if you walked out you missed a kick-ass 90 mins and got nothing in return.
Effects. The CGI is totally fine, there's no janky CGI moments. I honestly don't know what else to say about this, maybe the people complaining about it walked into the wrong film?
Plot, or rather plot holes. Ok, I'll meet people halfway on this. Personally it didn't stop my enjoyment of it but there's a couple of "but why didn't they just..." and "but surely there's still..." moments. The ending is going to take a little unpacking. At worst though it's a little confusing but it'll come good, I have enough faith in the MCU at this stage to take a few things on faith.
Columbo (1971)
Big fan of Columbo!
It's true to say that the 70s episodes are the best, but I can enjoy most all the episodes from the entire run.
There's plenty of reviews that explain all the good points so I won't repeat.
I do however want to address the 2 reviews which give the show an extremely negative rating. Almost all reviews are 7+ but there are a couple that rate 1-3 out of 10. The reason? Columbo smokes a cigar. Yes that's right. They just can't bear it and are so offended and disgusted at the cigar smoking that they headed straight for IMDB to recommend that you don't watch. Oh and also the ruffled unkempt appearance didn't impress them either. Seriously, have a day off... I'm usually an easy-going each-to-their-own kinda guy and everyone is entitled to an opinion; but when that opinion is complete and utter rubbish it needs pointing out.
So ignore the very few negative reviews, they can be disregarded and/or ridiculed.
Hackers: Wizards of the Electronic Age (1985)
Great Partner to the Book!
Great Partner to the Book!
Worth a watch on it's own, but if you've read the book this is a nice addition to it.
