Banshee (2013)
Why is this not rated 10?
I discovered this series many years after it was made. And I absolutely don't see why it isn't rated higher, or why it doesn't have its own fan club. Because it's - in a word - brilliant!
Ex-con gets released after 15 years in prison, travels to the small town where his ex-girlfriend and partner-in-crime is living with a new identity. A circle of unexpected events happen and he ends up posing as the sheriff of said small town. That's the story in a nutshell.
The action is intense and hard-hitting. Not choreographed dances like modern Kung fu movies, this is brutal, bloody, old-school action. The story and dialogues are tightly knit together, and there's never a moment of boredom. All the characters are in a game of chess with each other, because it's a small town and everyone has their own idea of survival or supremacy. Individual acting performances are brilliant. Yes, there is a lot of nudity. But at no point does it feel like , just part of the intense passion the rest of the story is woven with.
The choice of music warrants separate mention. Both the title track, and the songs they use in or after a situation. And it's all good old rock. Clearly the person in charge of music selection knows his stuff.
Banshee is like strong whisky. Heady, unforgiving, and not for everyone. But if action and rock is your thing, you can't miss it.
Blues Story (2003)
Splendid refresher on the blues
It was quite heartwarming to watch this film. The history of blues, told through direct interviews of icons. The pace never slows down, primarily because the entire film is narratives from the legends interspersed with their performance videos. Lots of historical footage. An absolute must watch for anyone taking interest in this genre of music
