Marriage Story (2019)
An unfair perspective from a man's point of view.
This film just made me feel frustrated. I didn't like it, I didn't hate it. I just didn't get it. I felt like I wasn't the target audience even though I'm married and I have a young son so you'd think I'd be able to have some perspective. I could relate to some of the struggles, I could relate to some of the arguments. But mostly it just felt like a film written by a man, trying to make you feel sorry for the man.
And I did. I felt really sorry for Charlie! I wanted to see it from both sides but I don't think the writer really wanted that.
The speech by Laura Dern about the idea of a perfect father only being a recent thing rang incredibly true. And the film only perpetuates this.
The film starts off beautifully with a list about what they each love about each other. It seems like it should be an amicable divorce. Then suddenly this crazy divorce lawyer is involved, Nicole turns into an absolute cow and Charlie is completely blindsided. I just didn't buy it. Moral of the story, all women want to do is take your children and steal your money in the process. Feel sorry for the poor man, he only had a little affair (which felt completely brushed over!) and now look what this awful woman is doing to destroy his life. It just made me really angry.
Great acting, horrible story.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Not perfect but entertaining
Why are people being so negative? Take this movie at face value. It's entertaining, the acting is fairly good, it's visually stunning, it's heart warming. No it's not perfect, no it's not the original trilogy, yes there are plot holes but I still sat in the cinema and enjoyed every minute. I loved the first in this trilogy, I was disappointed with the second but this film was great. It ended well and rounded off the trilogy nicely!
I just can't understand why the endless amount of marvel films that are spewed out every year consistently have great reviews even though they're absolutely packed with the same sort of plot holes and seemingly pointless storyline tangents. I really feel like star wars fans went into the cinema with their minds already made up and nit picked it from the start.
Just enjoy it!
Grey's Anatomy: Losing My Religion (2006)
Cried my heart out
This was such a good episode. I was emotional at the end when Denny dies (sorry about the spoilers) I honestly cried my heart out. Katherine Heigl is such a good actress she was amazing in that scene. I agree with what someone else posted, she is the star of the show, Ellen Pompeo is a bit bland sometimes. The end scene was perfect, it was so sad that Denny dies but the music and the acting was just flawless. I love this show so much, I am completely and utterly addicted. And the McDreamy love story seems to have sparked back to life :) can't wait for the next season and find out what happens. Overall a really great episode which will definitely have you feeling emotional.
The Break-Up (2006)
its like marmite, you either love it or you hate it!
Personally, I loved the film. I thought it was truthful, well acted, well scripted and, though a little slow, it kept my interest throughout. Anyone who has ever been in a relationship thats turned sour will watch this and definitely be able to relate to the characters (men to Vaughn and women to Anniston). The portrayal of male and female values and importance I found to be accurate and believable such as when Anniston has prepared a fancy meal for her family even though she has worked hard all day and Vaughn comes home and watches football rather than helping. Come on!
I can totally understand why people would dislike this film but you've got to see it before you knock it.
Ideal for any girl going through or already gone through a "Break Up".
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
The worst book, the worst film...
As an avid fan of the Harry Potter books I always get quite defensive when the film goes against the book or misses out important bits. I found the other four films enjoyable and well done even if they didn't quite follow the books but this film, I did not feel, met their standards. The best aspect, I feel was the casting, as the characters were well chosen, especially Luna Lovegood! However, the acting wasn't great and the pace of the scenes were too slow. I didn't feel that the characters were as easy to relate to and they seemed awkward and wooden. I also felt that the film didn't go into enough depth and for someone who had not read the book, it would have been confusing and vague. Overall, I felt that the film wasn't up to scratch and found it vague, slow and slightly dull. I understand how hard it is to adapt a book as great as Harry Potter and of course the film is worth seeing... just, don't expect a great deal.
El laberinto del fauno (2006)
dark, violent and beautiful... but I did think it would be more about a maze..
When i first saw the trailer for Pans Labyrinth I immediately wanted to see it because I love films that are about mazes and the challenges within them. However, when I went to see the film I was slightly disappointed by the fact that the film was hardly about a labyrinth at all but more about the war and the violence within it. I did think that the movie was very beautiful and the acting was amazing, especially by the young girl. Overall I enjoyed the movie immensely even though it wasn't what I expected. If you want to see a film that is both dark and beautiful, strange and amazing then I would recommend you to definitely see it. But be wary if you scare easily... this film did give me nightmares.
Donnie Darko (2001)
I've got it!!!
I've got it!!... At least I think I have. The reason why the bullies and Cherita are set up behind Donnie in some shots could be symbolic of the angel and the devil on his shoulders. Generally, whatever is good is shown on his left side and whatever is evil or threatening is on the left. For example, in the lifeline exercise shot, the bullies are on his right shoulder and Cherita is on his left. This also relates to the lifeline exercise in which fear is shown on the right side of the line and love on the left. Cherita, who obviously fancies Donnie, could also portray her role as an angel through love and the bullies are maybe to do with what Donnie should fear. When Donnie says to Jim Cunningham that he's an antichrist, Gretchen is on his left side and the bullies are on his right. This cant just be a coincidence
Oh god now I even sound like Donnie, I really need to find a new movie to be obsessed about! Anyway, let me know if you agree with my interpretation. Holly x
