Better Watch Out (2016)
Absolute trash
Advertise the movie you made accurately or don't advertise it at all. I could have used that hour and forty minutes of my life on something I'd actually enjoy.
Devil's Gate (2017)
Holy smokes this is bad
I really wanted to like this. I love Milo Ventimiglia and Shawn Ashmore. But about 30 minutes in we are treated to a flashback in which a police officer shouts "CALL 911!" In her office. Where she works. Because she is a police officer. This is roughly on par with the rest of the script. So, I dunno. Do with that what you will.
Black Mirror: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too (2019)
Uhg
I never want to hear that version of Head Like a Hole again.
I Kill Giants (2017)
No one's missing anything, it just isn't that deep
I get what it was reaching for, and it had it's moments. But Pan's Labyrinth it was not, and that's my bar for really spectacular magical realism.
This was laid on far too thick, and when I should have been emotionally entrenched and invested, I was rolling my eyes instead.
I will say it started off pretty strong. It just couldn't follow through.
Shrill (2019)
Kind, funny, poignant, human
Aidy Bryant is incredible. I binge watched all six episodes in one sitting and it was over too quickly. Great cast, great writing, and so much heart. We had better get a season two.
Into the Dark: Treehouse (2019)
A smidge heavy handed, maybe.
But I enjoyed it. Acting is slightly above the par set in previous films in this series, and it certainly captures a moment in time. It's not anything earth shattering, but that's not what I watch this particular series for.
And because I keep seeing this query in reviews: March is Women's History Month. That's how it fits.
Riaru onigokko (2015)
Presumably created specifically for men...
...who enjoy 6,000 high school girl upskirt shots before seeing them brutally killed. If that's not you, I'd give it a pass.
Heartthrob (2017)
Dumb dumb dumb dumb
Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb DUMB mess of misogyny and pop philosophy. Dumb.Dumb. Dumb. But thinks it's smart.
Terrifier (2016)
Torture Porn and a Wasted Villain
Catch 16 sequels in the next decade if you're into that sort of thing.
Sharp Objects (2018)
Thank You
I love Gillian Flynn because she writes about real women. Fully fleshed out, gritty, strong, good bad and ugly, real women. I love Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson because they convey that beautifully.
I was really looking forward to the start of this miniseries because I so loved the book, and so far I am not disappointed. The cinematography and score are fantastic, and the acting is superb. It is a slow burn, as it should be, and it is in equal measure tense, taught, and hauntingly beautiful. I cannot wait to watch the rest of this story unfold.
The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)
Uhg
The acting was not exceptional. The plotting was not exceptional. The dialogue was definitely not exceptional. Characters regularly made decisions running counter to even a modicum of common sense. It was dumb. It was so dumb. Just watch the original again instead.
