Invasion (2021–2024)

Mindnumbing
28 November 2021
I honestly thought I was missing something watching this show bored out of my mind, but then I read the other reviews and found I was not alone. This show is dismal, slow paced and the characters not interesting enough to care about. The only group I was remotely interested in were the "lord of the flies" group of kids. For a show called Invasion, I would have expected to see some kind of invaders. But episode after episode of nothing. Just people clashing and arguing with each other. I've cancelled Apple + and don't care about seeing what happens in this snoozefest of a show.

As average as everyone says

I had heard so many bad things about this movie, but went in with an open mind. It wasn't terrible, but I can see why there was so much disappointment. The film just drags, and never seemed to go anywhere. I think Ben Affleck is actually a very capable batman, and doesn't deserve the hate. But he and Cavill didn't have much to work with in terms of script. The battle between them is nothing short of silly.

The highlight for me was Wonder Woman, I thought she was fabulous and came in at the right moment when things were really dragging. I will definitely keep an eye out for her solo movie. This movie is okay, that's about the highest praise I can give it.

Frankenstein (II) (2015)

Surprisingly touching
24 September 2016
I only watched this because I like some of the actors, and was expecting a B grade horror movie. I was pleasantly surprised with Frankenstein. The monster is established in the beginning as a baby in a man's body, who falls in love with one of his creators, Marie. He initially sees her as his mother, and calls her mum throughout the movie. But as he grows he develops more of a romantic attachment to her. He is innocent and naive, but super strong, which causes havoc wherever he goes.

I can see why a lot of people don't like this movie. The violence is quite gruesome, and while it fits something like The Walking Dead, the basic storyline of this movie is the touching tale of a young man who sees himself as a monster, who just wants to be with the woman he loves. Those who enjoy the horror aspect might not appreciate the emotional side, and those looking for a love story won't necessarily enjoy the violence and gore.

Xavier Samuel does a good job as the monster with the mind of a baby. Your heart just goes out to him. His love for Marie is so believable. And Carrie Anne Moss is wonderful as the conflicted scientist who is torn between affection for the man she raised from "birth" and the violent creature he becomes.

Compulsion (I) (2013)

Very underrated
1 July 2016
I found this movie on Netflix, with only two stars so I didn't have high expectations. But I liked the actors so I gave it a chance.

I can see why a lot of people don't get this film. It's dark and twisted, and some parts you have to use your imagination about what happened. It doesn't spoon feed you anything. It also starts out quite funny, so audiences might be surprised when it gets serious.

Heather Graham is surprisingly good in this movie. I've really only known her for playing air headed characters, and at first that's what you get. But she has more range than I originally gave her credit for as the somewhat unbalanced Amy. Carrie-Anne Moss is brilliant as the tortured Saffron. My heart ached for her by the end. The acting really is superb, and the storyline is not your usual fare. But well worth a watch.

Crossing Lines (2013–2015)

Brilliant show...until season three
1 July 2016
The first two season of this show are amazing. Brilliant writing, fantastic acting and interesting story lines. The formula is similar to your Law and Order or NCIS type shows, but the European setting adds an extra element. Every episode is set in a different country, instead of your usual New York or LA story lines. The cast are truly diverse, with German, French, Dutch main characters. Several episodes have you on the edge of your seat, with some very exciting and dramatic events.

Then season three happened. Suddenly half the cast was gone...including the main character Hickman! There had been a few story arcs in the second season that are just forgotten. What happened with Ava's search for her father, did Hickman end up with Amanda (she was such a great character who deserved more screen time) and the story lines of the other major characters such as Tommy's ongoing family problems. Really disappointing to have such a good show turned into an entirely new series. 10/10 for the first two seasons, forget the third.

Poignant and Harrowing
19 May 2009
When the ending credits rolled, the entire audience sat frozen in shock, completely speechless...

This movie, based on the novel by John Boyne, is about a young boy, Bruno, whose family are sent to live in the country for his father's work.

Bruno is initially reluctant to move, not wanting to be separated from his friends. He spies a farm, full of people in "pyjamas", out his bedroom window. When he asks about it, he is frequently dismissed. He is eager to visit the farm as he can see children there, but is strictly forbidden from going any further than his front garden.

We soon learn that the camp is not a farm, but in fact a concentration camp. Bruno sneaks out to get a closer look, where he befriends a young boy called Shmuel. Bruno is initially jealous of Shmuel, thinking he lives on a fun farm with lots of friends. Shmuel explains that he cannot leave, and he is there because he is a Jew, which confuses Bruno.

Bruno is conflicted by the teachings of his tutor, who tells him that the Jews are evil. Bruno can't understand how his friend Shmuel, and the family's kindly servant Pavel, can be so evil. His sister becomes a militant Hitler supporter complete with posters on the wall, which only adds to young Bruno's confusion.

Bruno gradually begins to piece together what is really going on at the camp, and what his father really is - as does his mother, who is horrified when she learns the true nature of the smoking chimneys.

My only criticism is that the film is spoken with English accents, which makes things confusing in the beginning (wondering if they are English people living in Germany) and takes away from the authenticity. Obviously the film would have to be in German to be truly authentic, however it is generally accepted that an accent implies that the characters would have been speaking the language.

A beautiful and poignant film about innocence, loyalty and friendship, set within the sheer horror of the Holocaust.

Surprisingly Funny!
20 March 2008
Looking at the images of Victoria Beckham in the magazines, it's easy to think she is - as she puts it - a miserable cow. But for someone who is constantly being photographed with a sour, snooty look on her face, she actually has quite a sense of humour and a dry wit.

This show follows Victoria as she prepares for the move to America. She goes house shopping, learns to drive, meets a cruel website journalist and practises what to do in an earthquake. Through it all we get to see another side of Victoria, the wisecracking, media savvy woman who seems to genuinely care about and miss her family who are still in Spain.

The most unexpected thing we see in this show is Victoria's ability to poke fun at herself and not be too serious - a complete departure from the image of her we see in the media.

A very funny and entertaining show, and keep an ear out for some of the great one-liners from Victoria...

(Talking about Britney and Paris): "There's a few girls around here that go out without knickers on....you know....why do they do that???"

"It looks like someone with extremely bad taste threw up in here."

(Being pulled over for a driving offense): "I was completely shocked and devastated because I was wearing flat shoes... I didn't know whether to pose or get arrested"

"Let me get myself miserable before we go out."

"It's exhausting being fabulous..."
