Gantz (2010)
Watchable, but you need to be used to this type of japanese movies and the acting
I haven't watched the Anime nor read Manga, but came across this movie checking for some live actions from Anime.
The idea behind it's interesting and always enjoyable that not everything will be explained leaving the audience to make their own assumptions.
One great director once said, he makes 50% of the movie and the audience does the other 50%. The way you understand the movie doesn't have to be the way the director had in his mind.
Sorry, coming back to the movie, it reminds me of 'The cube' in terms of the characters, how they ended up there and what's the goal.
Worth giving it a try, but as i say in the subject of this comment, you need to be familiar of japanese acting. If you come from Hollywood movies to this type for the first time, it may be hard to fully enjoy.
The Witcher (2019)
Another punch in the stomach for the (Disney) 'professional' critics
It's violent, it's bloody, it's slightly gory and does contain sexual scenes. But isn't that what the Dark Ages are about? There was no internet back then for people to have virtual wars.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Not that bad but it suffers from the overall trilogy
I liked the dark tone of it, and if there's a character they brought to this universe worth being remembered is Kylo Ren. Other than him, the shining ones are the oldies.
Also the movie seemed to ignore the character development Rian Johnson did (if any at all), making Poe and Fin more mature and giving them a purpose.
On the other hand, i seriously desliked the use and abuse of lightspeed (if i remember correctly the Millenium Falcon always had issues jumping to lightspeed, and now i don't remember seeing it failing one single time), aswell as the reviving power of the force, which appeared in this movie and was used 3 times...
Glad Rey finally learned how to handle a lightsaber, the comedy was acceptable and not so much out of place like TLJ, scenarios are incredible and music folds with the scenes flawlessly.
I'm sure it wasn't easy to take control of this last episode after the mess Rian did with TLJ, but JJ was able to deliver something, even if it has no place next to the originals.
Out from the 3 is the best one (i did not like Force Awakens), but this is not the universe i used to love.
To Kathleen, if the writers are so good, then bring us something original and let's see if it sticks.
Now go and destroy DRagon Ball or Lord of the rings
Anna (2019)
Surprisingly good
It doesn't bring anything new besides showing how a life a model may be when you are in the early stages of your carreer.
Not only that version of her life was not so fascinating, being a spy also was keeping her to have a life.
I liked the twists, but some scenes shown to explain the twists, could have been added so the audience tries to guess the plan she is carrying out.
Besides that, also shows how we men fail in what we do best, just because there's a tremendous gorgeous girl in it....
Good to watch in a flight without any explicit sex scene.
Doom: Annihilation (2019)
Still better than the big budget one
Don't really understand all the criticism written here. What were you expecting from a low budget related to a 'in your face' shooting fps game?
And to be honest you should look at it from all the limitations they were facing when bringing this up.
For a low budget. they kept it simple without adding horrifying cgi, the scenarios looked pretty ok, acting nothing more nor less than expected, no need to add braless women, and certainly you see more of the game items in this movie than in Rock's one.
Keep it up
Joker (2019)
No one's laughing now
Certainly there's an huge hype around the movie, and certainly this is not a movie for the general DC/Marvel audience.
But don't get me wrong, I bow towards the bold and risk-taking of bringing such a movie under such a notorious and well-known character.Although, I doubt if it wasn't about joker, it would been so widespread.
This is the kind of movie that leaves you thinking after you watched it, or makes you discuss with your friends/online for hours. Not only about its ending and what it meant, but how toxic and indifferent humans may be to one another, the respect you have towards others, how fragile an human mind can be, and finally, the monsters we may help to create.
It's a psychologic, depressive and sad movie but also an eye-opener.
And i tend to believe that was the whole point. To bring a message to the world under a very known character that you know will attract a bigger audience.
Sad for those 'professional' critics who are concerned about the violent content (psychological/physical) when kids can get to any sorts of content on the internet.
This is one small part of our world, and better to have them aware than to try and hide human imperfections.
Aliens (1986)
My all-time favorite movie
Yes, Alien is a master piece, but this one is my favorite.
The music, the plot, the military industry futuristic, the corporation, the cast, memorable and personalities given to the characters that you end up loving, the lines (Get away from her you b**** Game over man, Game over. How did they cut the power? they're animals),the queen, the tremendous Lance Henriksen, and damn the gun sounds.
It takes the great work from Ridley and respecting the original, not copying it, takes it to a whole different level.
When you get to know that the cast went through military training and Sigourney was kept away because she was shooting some other movie, but also to get the feeling of being a 'strange body'. And the scenes where the actor(s) were not told what would happen to capture real reactions. (knife scene with Hudson).
I love every inch of this movie and i always nod when im asked about my favorite movie, and the person never watched Aliens.
Go do it now but watch the directors cut.. It ages flawlessly
Doomsday (2008)
Watch it, you will not regret
I think i came across this movie checking on Rhona's filmography and damn how cool this was :)
The story is nothing we haven't seen already and we can clearly see inspiration was taken from other movies.
When i saw it some years ago, i had the impression it was 2 movies in one. The first part of the movie resides on the usual military virus containment plot, while the second just goes berserk into post-apocalyptical filled with gore.
The first part you will find plot holes and the usual virus/zombie epidemic. But the second one, was something i didn't see it coming. That's where the action takes place and it's non-stop til the end of the movie.
It's not a masterpiece, far from it, but it's damn entertaining and you gotta give credit for making such a movie in a genre that has been exploited that people started to avoid movies about zombies.
And well, Rhona is just marvelous
X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
Ex-Men
I see a lot of people rating 1 and bashing the movie to its knees.
Perhaps not being a die hard fan of the series and not feeling betrayed, i'm capable of providing a more honest review.
There's no continuation from the previous movie (Apocalypse), and i'm totally lost in which moment of the story we are right now.
The movie centers in Jean (obviously), and we have some flashbacks and then we move to the present. Though i believe it should be after apocalypse arc due to the events in the end of the movie, but then back in apocalypse Jean already had Phoenix inside. On the other hand, Raven/Magneto relation seems to have connection to the previous movie. Well, guess better it's just to forget Apocalypse, and not that hard since wasn't a great movie either.
Coming back, Sophie as Jean is just so empty. I didn't follow much GOT but there's no way she is capable of playing this character and transpiring the avalanche of events and feelings going through the character. It's terrible and what could save this movie just made it worse.
On the bright side, James McAvoy nails it. And in the absence of Sophie being able to portray her character, James brings us a Professor X that is the real dark of this movie. I don't know if this developments happen in the original, and understand fans may be pissed if it never went this way, but i liked the way he becomes more political and not always being this well intentioned man.
Finally Raven (Jennifer) gets some character development, but i guess it was easy to shine in thismovie when the main character was so blank.
And apparently Raven had many lovers ;)
All in all, the script isn't well writen, it doesn't bring nothing new (always humans accept mutants, humans don't accept mutants), everything is predictable (besides professor x), confusing to understand at what moment of the story are we, terrible acting for the main character....just another movie fro the saga without direction. Just to be consistent with Disney approach :)
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
Thank you Cameron for bringing justice to anime/manga adaptations
It is what it is. Those who know the anime and manga will feel that finally hollywood managed to do japanese animation live-action true and faithful to its source. While those who didn't know, will not see much originality in the story (since the original is not from this century) but a fun action packed movie, with an adorable and kickass main character.
Only few directors like Cameron could take this risk and bring this up with such a budget, and i'm gad he did.
Unfortunately Cameron got his hands tied with Avatars but i seriously hope this won't end up here and a sequel will come, and perhaps more movies from japanese manga/anime will finally respect its sources and nature.
The Predator (2018)
If it was produced by Disney...
Would still be crap but have loads of people trying to say otherwise.
This is the decade of destruction of the big and epic movies from the 80s and 90s.Either by rip-off or just trying to extend the franchise.
Unfortunately for studios it doesn't matter if it's a good script, what matters is if it makes money. That's what a good movie is.
It's a disgrace what is being done by the studios due to the lack of originality and the need to get cash in.
And what's with all movies trying to copy the marvel comedy?
It's up to you to stop this madness and don't watch such mvies in the theaters
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Indiana Jones in Space
Not as bad as some people try to make it.
Good paced movie and quite packed with adventure and some twists.
Still better than the 2 original ones they brought recently.
Ready Player One (2018)
Mixed feelings
The movie resides mostly on bringing nostalgic feelings to its audience.
If you were not here in the 80s and 90s and were never much into games, comics nor anime; then this movie will make absolutely non-sense to you.
If you did, then you will enjoy seeing the mash-up of a bunch of characters and vehicles known to you.
Other than that, the story is just 'meh'. At the same level as a Transformers movie and far from being anything original or anything you were not expecting.
Visuals are impressive but sometimes too dark to catch everything that is happening in the screen..
But unfortunately that's mostly it. Feels so empty for a Spielberg movie.
Worth the ticket but a movie that will easily get forgotten.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Only you can stop this legacy slaughter
Did imdb give a 8 stars by default to this movie or what happened here?
I must assume there was never an idea what to do with the saga. Disney just took the easy path to get some cash in.
Bring the old heroes back, bring the old epic scenarios back, add loads of CGI, explosions and laser beams...and just see it rolling down the cliff.
And only the audience can stop this. Don't purchase a ticket and do not buy the merchandise for you nor for your kids.
About the movie itself, there's nothing much to say. It's like watching a CSI episode, you know how it's gonna end, the question is if the story will keep you hooked.
I understand the intention to change, but the comedy moments are just out of place. This is not a marvel movie

Alien: Covenant (2017)
Next time let us know it's just a remake of its original title
It's just a rip-off from the original title but with CGI.
Receiving a stress call/android turning evil/alien coming on board of the ship/burning alien with the trusts/throwing an alien into space/female- short hair-not sexual appealing-main character.
There's an enormous lack of intellect when it comes to how the crew behave and make decisions, which makes the movie horrifyingly predictable. The movie itself doesn't answer any of the questions brought from Prometheus. And this time we are even further away from LV-426.
he only thing i'm sure is that i won't be paying to watch the next one. For a die-hard fan, I just hope this doesn't go above 7 stars and gets the criticism it deserves.
