Tonari no Totoro (1988)
Most Beautiful Animated Movie I have ever seen (so far)
This is the first Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki movie I have seen. I haven't watched a lot of animated movies. I properly started watching them recently. So, when I saw this, I was really amazed by how beautiful it was. It's just a really really beautifully animated movie.
The story is simpe yet charming and magical and really cute. The characters (Satsuke, Mei, Granny, Totoro, Kanta) blend well together. Specially, scenes between the girls and Totoro are really good (the acorns scene, first meeting between Mei and Totoro, the bus stop scene with the Cat bus and the last part of the film with the cat).
Opening and closing songs (especially the closing song) are very catchy. Music throughout the film was rather nice.
Overall, a great film with a good story and stunning visuals.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Great!
Some spoilers. Nothing that ruins the plot.
Brilliant film. From writing to acting to sound design to musical score to cinematography, everything is exceptional. First hour does feel a bit confusing, especially with some of the jargon, but that first hour sets up the Trinity test in the second hour quite brilliantly and then there is just the horror of what happens next. First hour also sets up the final act of the film and creates a mystery with all the hearings, be it of Oppenheimer or Lewis Strauss, which ultimately pays off in the end.
Definitely worthy of a theatre experience. The music and tension in the Trinity test scene is absolutely bonkers and then the aftermath: sheer perfection.
Writing was excellent.
Brilliant acting all around from the main cast (Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Josh Hartnett, Florence Pugh) as well as the supporting cast (Benny Safdie, especially, was brilliant as Edward Teller), even actors who were just there for a scene or two were brilliant (Tom Conti, Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek, Casey Affleck, and, of course, Gary Oldman).
Music was top notch.
Cinematography was beautiful.
Sound design and editing was exquisite.
And of course, directing was incredible. The decision to show the two hearings, one in color, the other in black and white, and going back and forth with that til the end of the film and unravelling the mystery behind why was Oppenheimer's security clearance revoked and who was behind it and the reveal and the twist was quite extraordinary. Another brilliant thing was to show the mental state of Oppenheimer and his point of view with the use of music and lighting.
Great film. 10/10.
The Laundromat (2019)
7.5. Message is good. Acting is Top-Notch. Story is all over the place.
I thought 'The Big Short' was a difficult film to understand. But I still understood some basics and the way it was presented was funny and enjoyable (don't worry about the comedy, it's very good in this film as well).
It's a comedic telling of the story behind The Panama Papers. Not the people who leaked it but the people who were exposed. Law firms and offshore companies and people (lawyers and money launderers) behind them. And stories of people affected because of the actions of these firms.
This movie will always be compared to The Big Short. It has almost the same style. It has that 4th wall break like The Big Short with main characters explaining what's going on and how things work (which is still a little hard to comprehend).
Acting is top-notch. Gary Oldman is amazing as always as he plays 'zee' German 'Jürgen Mossack'. First movie I've watched of Antonio Banderas and Meryl Streep. Both were great in their roles.
Music was good.
Cinematography was alright.
Writing was very good.
Just the execution and the presentation were ok.
Overall, a good film led by a great cast with not so good execution/presentation. Worth a watch.
The Current War (2017)
It's good. But historically inaccurate as stated by almost every reviewer here.
It's a good film. Good acting, costumes, music.
Writing could've been a lot better.
It's not about Edison vs. Tesla. It's about Edison vs. Westinghouse. Tesla's story was never told (much like real life), kinda disappointing, since I thought it was a Tesla vs. Edison film. Didn't know about George Westinghouse until this film.
Overall, a good film if you can look past the historical inaccuracies.
