Mile 22 (2018)
I liked this movie
Sure, it'll never win an Academy award, but I didn't regret giving up 90 minutes of my life (OK, 2 hours with commercials and trailers). It was entertaining, and I think that's what this genre of movie are all about. It actually had a believable plot, and the twists were exquisite. I don't think anyone saw them coming.
It does have sequel written all over it.
Trauma (2009)
A fun romp down EMS fantasy lane
BUT, do not expect this show to be anything like being on the rigs. I understand you need excitement in a show to retain interest, but it is so out in fantasy land, from the procedures EMTs vs paramedics are allowed to do, to the insane pretend driving, to the shallow one dimensional characters. This show, if it would have been realistic might have lasted more than one season. No certified provider one would ever be allowed to work in the field practicing outside their scope of practice, and it seems as if every call (or at least one each episode) was completely outside the realm of reason. Additionally, no matter how friendly you are with the staff, you never call a Dr. by their first name.
It was nice to see Kevin Tighe (DeSoto from Emergency!) get a showing in one episode.
Pacific Rim (2013)
A complete waste of cellulose
I am looking at the 7.8 average here and I am wondering what movie they were watching while I was watching Pacific Rim. The movie is plot less, the story cliché and the acting wooden. There is no one that I can connect to as a real person performing as a real person would in the same circumstances. And don't get me started on the physics of it all. How do you "stand and fight" a monster in a 10 story tall robot in several hundred feet of water? How do 8 helicopters (or more) fly in sync when transporting the robots? Why would giant robots use "rock em sock em" tactics? There is only so much suspension of disbelief that I can muster for a movie. Or maybe I was just missing the medication the other reviewers seem to be on. It's a cookie cutter video game turned into a movie. There have been plenty of movies this year that are a lot better that haven't gotten the attention this one has.
I think I'd much rather visit the dentist; at least there I can get some lidocaine to numb the pain.
Irréversible (2002)
Crap movie; complete waste of time.
Directors need to stick with more conventional film-making techniques. Watching this was like seeing something with a strobe light on and and you're turning uncontrollably. I was able to sit through about 20 minutes of it before I had to turn it off. Good grief, I have to add 10 lines of text... OK, here goes. The movie opens in a crime scene, although you really can't tell it, except for the flashing blue lights bouncing off the walls; the camera is flying around, as if it's a leaf tumbling in the wind, so it rolls, and it turns and seems to fly around randomly without really settling on a scene. Finally, it does settle on a scene, and it's two guys in a hotel room which seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the movie. OK, I didn't sit through the entire movie and maybe they tied back in some time later, but at that point of the movie, they had nothing to add. The next scene is chaotic, as they pull the protagonist out of the "gay" club on a stretcher and place him in the ambulance. Then, there is more chaotic "leaf" blowing imagery. Then, it goes back in time, and it's the protagonist arriving at the club, and more leaf blowing video. The real issue is, I believe, that the camera never rests on a single scene long enough to actually understand what is going on. I finally gave up on this PoS movie after the protagonist's friend beats someone to death with a fire extinguisher. I know this was supposed to be presented ala Memento (another movie with sucked) or Pulp Fiction, but it really didn't work, at least for me.
The fact that it was subtitled in English also helped distract from the movie itself, as it's hard to read text at the bottom and watch shifting images at the same time.
Crash (2004)
This movie should get an academy award!
It's a great movie while being a study in prejudice and stereotypes. There are scenes where you'll find yourself perhaps agreeing with the central figures in the movie, and then moments later their actions will astound you. It looks at the preconceived notions and values from many different viewpoints. The film covers the lives of about 6 - 8 central characters, and the interactions between them as they pertain to prejudice. The film mimicks life in how a single incident can spread ripples through the lives of others.
There is one scene which will bring a tear to the eye of anyone with a heart.
