Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
From a casual fan, not very good.
The movie has some fun moments and a few jokes made me smile. But overall the movie is a bit of a mess, with really average CGI. I felt after seeing Dune 2 and how amazing the scale of everything felt there, that this just felt really average on a visual level. The fights didn't really do anything for me either. There was alot of fighting but I never got goosebumps or felt excited by any of it. It was pretty underwhelming. Godzilla also didn't get enough screentime! It's a movie made for kids basically. Maybe I'm just getting old! Dune 2 was one of the best cinematic experiences I've had in years, but this fell short big time!
Oppenheimer (2023)
Nolan impresses with a scientific and thrilling biopic for the ages
Mr. Nolan returns to the silver screen with an epic and thrilling biopic about famed physicist Dr. OPPENHEIMER, who was primarily known as the father of the atomic bomb. This is Nolan at his most scientific and political, it feels grown up and intelligent, while retaining the exciting pacing, editing and musical scores that he has become known for.
While this movie is heavy on science and theory, it never felt like it was too hard to follow, as long as you are paying close attention. It is a dialogue heavy film, more so than many of his previous films, and one could easily get lost if not giving the film your full attention. This is refreshing for a summer blockbuster, and as always Mr. Nolan respects his audience and doesn't necessarily dumb anything down for the masses.
The cast is led by an absolutely stellar Cillian Murphy, who rightly is receiving praise from all angles. He is consistently subtle with his acting from start to finish. I felt like perhaps we could of had one big "Oscar reel" scene with him, but he delivers a fantastic performance nonetheless and should absolutely be nominated for Best Actor. It is a delight to see this man lead such a heavy hitting cast after being a supporting player in Nolan's films for so long.
Robert Downey Jr. Also delights as Lewis Strauss. His return to dramatic acting reminds everyone what a formidable actor this man is with the right director and script behind him. He is calculating and explosive at times, and is perhaps the standout in the supporting category. Matt Damon also impresses as the army General responsible for overseeing the nuclear project. He has some of the best lines in the film and I was happy to see how much screen time he received. Honorable mention also to the always consistent Jason Clarke.
The cast continues on and on with well known faces filling almost every role there is. Nolan pulled no punches here and I would not be surprised if the cast received a SAG ensemble nomination or potentially a win.
Special mention must go to Ludwig Göransson for the films musical score. It perfectly accentuates the nerve wracking and terrifying subject matter while also having that sense of wonder, almost cosmic in its sound at times. The score is a major part of the films energy and plays often, which some may find distracting but I found it to keep the film moving at a brisk and exciting pace as these scientists race against time.
Overall, this film is a resounding success for Mr. Nolan in my opinion. He is firing on all cylinders here and you can tell he is passionate about the subject matter. The runtime felt adequate for me and I was glued to the screen for every minute. One of his best yet. 9/10.
Andor: Kassa (2022)
It has more class than most recent projects by far.
This show really feels like it is benefitting from some much stronger writing than what is usually on offer for Star Wars content produced recently. I have been consistently impressed now for the past 4 episodes in every department of production. The cast are doing an excellent job, some of the strongest acting in any Star Wars, ever. The writing and dialogue are a notch or two above almost anything in Star Wars as well. The costumes and sets are fantastic, and the musical score is really strong. Even the smaller actors and extras in this show put on a fantastic performance. It's really showing a different side to Star Wars in my opinion, I'm excited to see where it continues to head!
Killing Eve (2018)
Started great, but the final season is absolutely terrible.
Why did they even bother continuing the show? They should of ended it after season 2. Season 3 was on the verge, but now season 4 is just absolute garbage. I have no interest in finishing it. I feel embarrassed for Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer.
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 3: The Streets of Mos Espa (2022)
Favreau needs to stop having his buddies direct.
Robert Rodriguez is a terrible filmmaker and always has been. This is just Favreau hiring his buddies to direct Star Wars at this point. Honestly this show has been mediocre so far but this particular episode gives reason for concern. Favreau has done well with The Mandalorian, but he hasn't completely convinced me yet. I feel with this show he is showing us he doesn't know Star Wars as well as we might of first given him credit for.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Wonderful performances, direction and cinematography.
Great adaptation of the book. Perhaps the best Cumberbatch, Dunst, and Smit-McPhee have been yet. Jane Campion deliverer the goods. The eerie soundtrack from Johnny Greenwood was excellent. The cinematography is the most striking I have seen all year. Not to be missed.
Succession: What It Takes (2021)
Very overcomplicated and pretentious dialog
The show is great as usual but I've been noticing in S3 that the dialog is extremely try-hard and too clever for it's own good. Nobody speaks this witty on the fly and honestly it's just confusing because you end up focusing on what the hell was just said.
The Leftovers (2014)
So pretentious
I enjoyed S1 and some of S2 but boy did this show go off the rails big time. It was a chore to finish S3. Acting and music were good throughout but the writing and plot were all over the place.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 13: The Jedi (2020)
Great stuff.
So great to see this show thriving with characters from the earlier animated work. I felt like the setting and vibe was clearly paying homage to Akira Kurosowa. Rosario Dawson is the perfect choice for the role of Ashoka. Dave Filoni should be commended for his vision and direction on this episode. Faverau and Filoni need to become the new heads of the Star Wars brand.. it's clear now! This is the way.
