Batwoman (2019)
Utterly Disappointing
This Batwoman series is a complete trainwreck. I predict it will be a forgettable one season series, provided it doesn't get cancelled first. It seems the producers and writers did everything they could to distance the title character from DC Comics' original, virtuous, All-American, girl next door "Batgirl" character. Ridiculously bad acting by Ruby Rose makes this series all the worse. It is simply impossible to like this Batwoman character, and I have found myself repeated rooting for the bad guys in this series to kill her off. It is way beyond rational comprehension why the producers of this series would desire to cast a mostly unattractive, almost entirely flat chested, exceptionally frail looking, idiotically foul mouthed, and undesirably butch lesbian as Batwoman. It's fine that the producers have tried to cast caucasians, africans, asians and hispanics in supporting roles and as character actors but it appears that they've gone out of their way to exclude Native Americans from the cast. Focusing the character development of Batwoman on her choice of engaging in an aberrent sexual lifestyles truly destroys series. Based on the sexual BS we've seen thus far, It would not surprise me if the producers would attempt to work in characters connected to to other aberrant lifestyles such as bestiality in later episodes; however, I personally will not be viewing the series any long. As for my experience, having watched three episodes of this trainwreck is absolutely three to many.
Hurricane (2018)
Overall Very Enjoyable
World War II movies are perhaps my favorite genre and I've probably seen 85%+ of the WWII films produced over the years. While this film is not on the same level or even in the same league as 1969's Battle of Britain (and honestly that are no other battle of Britain films extant that are in the same league as the 1969 Battle of Britain film), I did find Hurricane (2018) to be very enjoyable. Period war movies are so very difficult to make, but the filmmakers did an exceptional job recreating the authentic look and feel of 1940's England and the RAF. You'll be very pleased to find that the story-line, though highly dramatized, does provide you, the viewer, with the proper historical perspective and background of World War II's Battle of Britain, and the formation of the Polish Squadron 303. The acting overall is very competent, sadly though with the exception of the lead female actress, who I just did not fine to be such a good fit relative to the performance of other actors in the film, plus the oddity that her character really suffers from having bleached blonde hair and a plethora of dark brown roots, which is something (women dyeing hair) that wasn't socially acceptable in 1940's Britain. The story line does , but only very slightly, suffer historically in the way it portrays British RAF officers being hateful and antagonistic towards the Polish volunteers. By all accounts the Brits during this time were deeply grateful to the military help of each and every allied soldier, sailor or airman, if not for anything else than for Britain being entirely on their own at that time while fighting the Nazis. The aerial combat and dogfight scenes are mostly competently done in CGI, though could have been so much better had the CGI artists been aware that aircraft engines cause the airplanes vibrate and that it is impossible for a plane and pilot to fly in perfect formation without being tossed around by wind gusts regardless of altitude. The only other primary fault I would find with this film is the screenwriter's use of anachronistic dialogue, i.e. having a character state that a squadron is coming "on-line" or having a squadron leader during flight order his pilots to stay off "com's". Neither of those modern day/internet age terms would have been used in the 1940's. Otherwise, I was surprised to see some scenes showing the Polish pilots appearing away from their airfield dressed in civilian clothes, as that is something that would have been so unlikely since wearing the uniform was akin to a badge of honor, while those of fighting age not wearing a uniform were very suspiciously as skulkers. Except for those few flaws, Hurricane is a very compelling film which justly shows the courage and determination of a group of Polish pilots who had lost everything due to the Nazi destruction and subjugation of their homeland, and who wanted desperately to make the German Luftwaffe pay in blood for their barbarity.
Bill Tilghman and the Outlaws (2019)
I Realy Wanted to Love this Film, but.......
I waited a while to submit this review in order to give the cast members and others related to or having a financial interest in the film's success a chance to post their 8-10 star reviews, which seems to be the trend with low budget films, though it is hard to understand why they believe their "B" movie should be higher rated than say, The Searchers, Gone with the Wind, Star Wars, and Forrest Gump. With that out of the way, it's time for an honest, unbiased review. After learning about this film back in 2018 I eagerly awaited its release. I so much wanted to love this film, because like some many others out their I really crave a resurgence in the Western film genre, but with Bill Tilghman and the Outlaws I was only left with disappointment. On the positive side, I did really enjoy the opening titles and credits. I like how they used black and white camera stills to introduce the characters and identify the actors by name. For the most part, the music in the soundtrack is very entertaining, and I really enjoyed the songs performed by the Walker Avenue Gang. Their lead singer is definitely worthy of a top C&W career in Nashville. My favorite character during the entire film would have to be John Buttram, who is the nephew of Pat Burttram who ages ago played Gene Autry's sidekick and starred as Mr. Haney in the old Green Acres TV series. John Buttram's voice is marvelously as similiar and entertaining as was his uncle Pat's. The concept and storyline for this film is brilliant and whoever came up with it deserves a big pat on the back. However, the film suffers from four primary failures in that of direction, casting, special effects, pacing that is the equivalent of watching a slow dripping faucet. As for casting, very competent performances were turned in by Ken Arnold, Brian St. August, Robert Neal Marshall, Darby Hinton, Barry, Cantor, John Buttram, Matthew Greer and Dan Collier. Cute little Christine Nelson, has previously shown herself to be a compentent actor and should have a promising career ahead of her, thus I can only attribute her performance to that of mediocre direction. Otherwise, except for the child actors, performances by the remainder of the cast were mostly lackluster or wooden. It was really difficult to watch the formerly beautiful Lana Wood in this film as a lifetime of booze, cigarettes and pork chops have really taken their toll. Concerning special effects, you'll find notthing really special about them. In fact, the cgi'd puff's of smoke representing bullets hitting dirt and wooden boards on buildings is simply embarrassing, as were the cgi'd cannon ball impacts. Overall, the film is worth watch, if for nothing less than its appeal as a nostalgic novelty...and if you can somehow mentally prepare yourself to have the absolute lowest of expectations, I think you will be able to watch the entire movie from beginning to end and may even find yourself enjoying at least some of it.
Hickok (2017)
Watch this or Root Canal? Definitely the Root Canal!
Students of history know the legend of James Butler Hickok was highly fictionalized in the dime novels of his era; however, this film goes so far beyond fiction that the title and titled character could have been called Wild Bill Pisspot and no one would be any wiser that the story was supposed to be about Hickok. The acting barely existent. Kris Kristofferson has kept his streak alive by being in yet another film in which displays absolutely no acting ability. As for Trace Atkins, he definitely shouldn't quit his singing career since it's something he's actually good at. I'm sure he's having fun dressing up and playing cowboy in the movies, but he does so at the cost of his dignity. He should consider firing his Hollywood agent and any posse of yes men who deceptively praise his performance, and face that fact acting talent he has not. Luke Hemsworth's performance is mediocre at best, but I believe it's entirely a result of an idiotic, unscreenworthy screenplay and lack of directing talent. I liked Bruce Dern as the kindly old drunken doctor, but the Director and Screenwriter did him a grave disservice by limiting his role and providing him dialogue that is far beneath his talent. I'll never forget the first time I saw Bruce Dern in a movie. It was 1972, I was 11 years old watching John Wayne and The Cowboys at the local movie house, and Bruce Dern simply scared the the hell out of me and my buddies when he threatened the little cowboy with the eyeglasses. For a long time afterward, we all but despised Dern. To making such a lasting and emotional impression on a generation of movie goers is the sign of an exceptional actor. As for the editing of this not so fine feature, once could only assume the job was given to the producer's young brother-in-law in order to just get his unreal Hollywood housewife to get the hell off his back about finding Junior a job in the movie business, because this film's editing is as choppy as it gets. To all the non-psychic investors out there who actually helped finance this F-class movie, I'm sure there are many more realist viewers out there who are thinking...."suckers!"
Tell the World (2016)
Absolutely Forgettable!
I am submitting this review as my honest opinion because I really despise reviews that have planted by parties connected to or interested in the success of a film. Unfortunately, this has become so prevalent throughout the internet that certain websites have been developed to analyze film and e-commerce reviews to help ferret out those whose posting has been with less than honest intent.
First of all, this straight-to-video production appears to be a 7th Day Adventist promotional film, which is absolutely fine but on the other hand is so disappointing due to suspect previous reviews.
Nevertheless, I personally do not share the glowing praises indicated by a few others. The pace is so slow that even after I increased the playback speed to 1.5, I still found the film so slow and boring. The characters are uninteresting and I had a hard time rooting for any of them or even finding some measure of associated sympathy with their circumstances. Alas, the plot and dialogue are so muddled that it would be difficult to even add spoilers to describe it. In fact, I finished this film wondering just what the heck I just watched.
On the one positive aspect of this film, the cinematography has been done very professionally, but unfortunately this is its only redeeming value.
Should you wish to waste 2.5 hours of your limited life span, then by all means throw it away on this film. Otherwise, there are thousands of other film titles that are so much more worthy of your time.
