Code Black: Hero Complex (2016)
"Hero Complex" (#2.6)
I love it when an episode's medical cases influence directly in the doctor's lives. It's something beautiful to see, and Code Back has a lock on that trick. This is especially apparent in "Hero Complex."
The parallels are revealed in a way that does not feel too forced, and the writers and directors should be admired for their work. Malaya treats a patient who was assaulted on her campus, and this was not easy for Malaya, as it reopened some painful wounds for her as she relived her own assault experience when helping her patient, Joy. But, as per Leanne's reminder, Malaya tries her best not to get lost in her memories, but rather use them to help Joy heal from the traumatic experience she has experienced. The twist that came with the episode regarding the alleged hero was not all too startling, as there were times where it seemed to allude to him as being the assaulter. Needless to say, that does not discredit how heartbreaking it was when Joy discovered that she confused the wrong people when she "said horrible things to him." Malaya did a great job of comforting Joy, and honestly, the writers deserve an Emmy already.
Additionally, #2.6 had yet another heartbreaking twist involving assisted suicide. In case we all were not upset enough, I think it is safe to say that this case just added insult to injury. Code Black did a great way of presenting the story lines alone, but doing both of them together was groundbreaking. Suicide and assault are the two darkest topics a medical drama could dream of addressing, but Code Black did it in a way that did justice to both topics. It goes without saying, though, that it was still all a lot to digest.
It's rather hard to impress me but this episode was breathtaking. Code Black has been growing to be one of the best medical dramas out there and it deserves more attention. I love this show. When a film can move you to tears from week to week, it is safe to say you are watching something pretty good. (Not to mention that each episode also has a large degree of intensity!) This one will go down in the books as one of my favorite episodes of this series.
Code Black: Fallen Angels (2017)
"Fallen Angels" (#2.16)
Breathtaking. Heart-pounding. Intense. Emotional. Powerful. Unforgettable.
These are all words that you can use to describe the season 2 finale of Code Black.
First of all, Heather will be missed. She was such a strong, crazed, charismatic, beautiful character. It took a while, but Heather really grew on me. I was in tears amid her passing.
Second of all, I was also in tears when Mama could not make a joke with Leanne before she entered quarantine. It was out of nature, and it was heartbreaking to see. We all know how deep their love is for one another, as their relationship has been apparent since day one. Jesse was rattled at the thought of losing Leanne, and so were we.
Thirdly, I cried when Leanne was explaining to Jesse how she has yet to allow Ariel in her daughter's old room because the pain of her loss is still unbearable for her, which leads me to the last highlight tear- jerker...and it's a big one...
We discover in an unexpected way that Leanne has opted to adopt Ariel. This was a HUGE leap of faith for Leanne, as her grief is her albatross and it is something that we have known since day one.
This is episode was all that we wanted in a season finale and more. Season 2 was a strong season of Code Black, with some memorable episode such as "Hero Complex," "Sleight of Hand," and, finally, this one, "Fallen Angels." From this, all that I could ever hope for is season 3 of Code Black. It cannot come soon enough. Seeing Leanne fit in her new, but familiar, role as a mother will be sobering and I believe it will present a new series of complications for her. It will also introduce a new atmosphere to the show, which could not hurt. Spicing things up can actually be a good thing.
All in all, this was a FANTASTIC season finale. We are left wanting more! I cannot wait to see what happens next. Congrats on a job well-done for season 2 to the actors, writers, and directors.
Code Black: Unfinished Business (2017)
"Unfinished Business" (#2.13)
"Guthrie becomes the hospital's new chaplain and considers undergoing a risky surgery to treat his Parkinson's; meanwhile, the doctors treat patients involved in a massive apartment fire."
CBS originally ordered a 13-episode season two of Code Black, so this would have been the season finale if it was not for them ordering 3 additional episodes. Coming into the episode, I knew that it was going to be good because season finales are usually planned beforehand. I had a feeling that this would be the episode of the series and I was right. I thought it was good. But it wasn't good. It was extraordinary. It was something new. Something we have not seen in any medical drama before. It was fresh. It was beautiful.
The episode starts with Rollie considering a new role at the hospital as chaplain. He cannot do work as a doctor; he can only provide nondenominational religious services and provide spiritual support to those who are unable to attend organized religious services. We saw how troubling that was for him in this episode when a baby was brought in from an apartment fire. They were prompted to take the baby to the hyperbaric chamber. Elliot was in the with the baby performing CPR. After quite some time, Elliot was unable to help save the baby despite his best efforts. Guthrie tells Elliot that he has to call the time of death but Elliot was still determined he would save the baby. Eventually, he called it but he was unable to leave the chamber until it decompressed. Rollie looked heartbroken. Noa stayed there with him outside of the chamber. So, so many tears at this moment.
Willis treats Lola, Emmanuel's daughter, who got in an argument with her father about going to NY to sing on Broadway. She asked Willis if she could see him. She wanted to apologize and not let what she said to him be the last thing he hears. Willis promised that she can see her father.
Guthrie talks with Emmanuel. Guthrie said he was scared. Emmanuel said if he believes in god, he has nothing to worry about. Emmanuel started to get sick and coughed up blood. They took him to the OR but were unable to save him. Willis too busy, forgot that he made his promise, and when Lola heard the news, she was very unhappy.
A mother is admitted after attempting suicide. She claimed that it would be best for her child. Angus said that the fire saved her life. The medication she took slowed her breathing, which in turn meant she inhaled less smoke. Angus explained that this was a second chance if he ever saw one.
By the end, we find out that this was all in Rollie's head. He got the DBS. Each of these stories connected to Rollie's life and it came out in beautiful, painful flashbacks where we saw how it connected with his past life. There were many tears. This episode is the best episode of Code Black yet, and there have been many that are really good, and this is quite possibly the best episode of television I have ever seen of any series.
