Departure (2015)
An amazingly beautiful and moving film.
I cannot understand the critics that, here, have written that Elliot was "wooden" and understated. The whole point of his reticence was to give his mother and Clement the latitude to explore their feelings and emotions whilst his feelings were almost unrecognised.
The frustrations he felt were almost palpable, and the desire to love and be loved was almost heartbreaking, as witness in the final scene when in frustration he wrestles and violently kisses Clement.
A beautiful and outstanding piece of cinema.
Quand on a 17 ans (2016)
A lost opportunity
I was hoping it would be an interesting, and ultimately a gay film that I could relate to, but as previously alluded to on another critiqe, it was was a complete mish mash of scenes. What occasioned the animosity between the two boys? What was the visit to the gay farmer all about? There was no explanation. In fact there was no explanation for a number of scenes, and the final realisation that the boys were in love was condensed into a ten minute finale. A deeply disappointing movie, that was only worth five stars for the attractive boys that acted in it.
Fair Haven (2016)
A lovely film
This is one of the films that I thought would not enjoy. A Pastor that has his subjects in thrall, and a boy who initially denies his true affections to the extent of dating his neighbourhood girl friend. For me, the defining moments were when James realised that Charlie needed help to cope with his injury, and James came to his rescue with an offer to drive him home. The other very emotional moment was, for me, when James and Charlie were lakeside and Charlie layed his hand on James. That released a torrent of feelings that would be difficult to describe. A very lovely film, that I would highly recommend. As an aside, Michael Grant (James) is an accomplished concert pianist, and all the piano pieces were performed by him. Watch it - and enjoy!
Handsome Devil (2016)
Excellent Movie
This was a film that I could absolutely relate to. Like Ned I had to hide my true feelings. It was a very lovely film, but essentially just a film.It does not have the intensity of "Monster Pies" or the heartbreak that "Center of my World" evokes. Maybe "Fair Haven" would adequately describe the emotion that this film arouses in me. Having said that, I would watch it again, if only for the pleasure of seeing "Conor" running around the Rugby pitch. Watch and enjoy. It was a pleasure that will last.
Monster Pies (2013)
A lovely film
I cannot believe that some "critics" awarded one or two stars to a lovely, enjoyable but ultimately sad film. What do you not like? It was shot on a limited budget with two untried actors who gave their most. It had humour, pathos and eventually sadness. I just don't understand how anyone could be unmoved with a film that exposes all the emotions that so many gay men feel unable to express. It was a lovely film, and I do hope the main actors go on to even greater fame. Thank you Australia for a beautiful film.
Die Mitte der Welt (2016)
A lovely film that I enjoyed.
I enjoyed it. I may be simple and I may be unable to understand the nuances that apparently abound, but for sheer entertainment for me, it was pleasing. So many of IMDb critics forget that they are watching a film that is designed to entertain. They go off on journey of esoteric criticisms that only the pompous and pretentious would understand. Sit back, open a beer and view it for what is was - just a film, and to me, an enjoyable one.
