Black Panther (2018)
Black Panther - Movie review
"Black Panther" is a movie that i was really anticipating. I had waited for this film since i saw for the first time "Captain America: Civil War" two years ago. When that movie came out everyone was talking about the great things in "Civil War", and one of those great things about that film was Chadwick Boseman's performance as Black Panther. I was incredible in that role and he kept me invested in his character. But i had this question inside my head: Will he hold up for an entire film by himself? - And two years later i have an answer for that question, and the answer is yes.
This movie is about T'Challa AKA Black Panther and he is about to become the king of his nation, Wakanda. And while this is happening a group of villains involving Michael B. Jordan and Andy Serkis are doing evil stuff and T'Challa has to stop them. This is the only thing that i going to say about the plot of this movie, because this movie is worth seeing.
This film was everything i wanted to see in a "Black Panther" movie and more. I like the fact that this movie is not just another super-hero movie, is actually a movie about a person becoming the king of a nation and the difficult task that he has to do. The film took the enough time to set up very well Wakanda, Wakanda's culture, and the importance of becoming a king. And that feeling that this film has, it makes you care more about the characters. You care about them when they are in danger, and there are a lot of moments were you wonder if they could actually succeed in what they are doing. This movie puts in your mind the question: Will this character survive? - Is really T'Challa the best king for Wakanda right now?
Talking about T'Challa, Chadwick Boseman once again killed it as Black Panther. He was a very cool hero, but he wasn't just a cool hero, he was actually a person that you can relate to. The writing for him was so good and that combined with Boseman's performance, makes Black Panther a really great hero. The cast of this film is excellent, Lupita Nyong'o, Andy Serkis, Forest Whitaker, Daniel Kaluuya, Martin Freeman, Danai Gurira, everyone is fantastic. I didn't mentioned this actor because i wanted to talk about him separately from the other ones, Michael B. Jordan. He was so good in this movie, he is a great villain and his motivation is so clear, that he might be the best Marvel villain since Loki, i'm serious.
This movie is being directed by Ryan Coogler, who in the past has made incredible films like "Creed", proves himself here that he is one the best young directors working today. There are a lot of shots and long takes at Wakanda, and is magnificent to see.
That leads to my negatives with the film, Ryan Coogler directed this movie incredibly, but i think that he has to learn how to film action sequences better. The action sequences in this film are fine, there are really great action sequences in this movie, but there are action sequences like the first one at the beginning of the movie, that are kind of bad. That first action sequence is edited very quickly and is very dark and you can barely see it, which kind of annoy me. Another issue that i have with the film is this. The visual effects in this film, for the majority of it, are very good, but there are some scenes were you can really notice the use of green or blue screen behind the actors. And that took me out of the movie in a couple scenes.
"Black Panther" was a very entertaining film, Marvel has made another great super hero movie. It has great action, great characters, excellent villains, it show us a new side of the MCU. The origins of Wakanda and the Black Panther mantle is explained very well so everyone can understand it. If you are a great Black Panther fan, or just a big fan of comic book movies, this movie is absolutely recommendable for you. It has a couple issues with the way the action is filmed and some CGI background that looked fake, but for the most part this movie was very entertaining and i want to see it again. "Black Panther" deserves an 8/10.
Coco (2017)
Coco - Movie review
"Coco" is a new movie from Disney Pixar Studios and tells the story of a young boy named Miguel who wants to be a musician. He wants to be such a great musician as Ernesto de la Cruz, who in this film is the greatest musician ever. And one day he decides to steal Ernesto's guitar to play with it, but accidentally he goes to the land of the dead and he has to figure out how get out of there. And from there we meet a lot of characters and maybe Ernesto de a Cruz himself.
Look, when a new Disney Pixar movie comes along i'm excited. They have accomplished so many things with their animations techniques and bringing also a great story that kids and adults can enjoy, that is virtually impossible to go to a Pixar animated film without great expectations. So i went to this film expecting great things but also with an open mind to seek any flaws with the story or something else.
"Coco" really surprised me, is a great animated film, and Pixar has prove once again that they are excellent at their job. This movie has, i think, the best animation that i have ever seen in an animated movie. You see the streets, the people, the animals, and it looks real. This movie is very colorful which is also great because it keeps you energized, and you want to see more from this world. The music in this film is terrific, i adore the music of this movie. Another great thing about the film is the characters, this movie has amazing characters. And this movie has great messages about follow your dreams, about how important family is, and their are great thing for kid to appreciate this film.
Another thing about the film is that the last 10 minutes, the movie becomes so emotionally powerful that a lot of people cry while watching this film. When you watch the end of the film, it leads to some great satisfying moments and i loved it.
The biggest flaw that i have with "Coco" is that sometimes the story becomes a little predictable and that is because the story in "Coco" is a story that we have seen before in movies, especially in animated films. You see certain things happen and you think: I have seen that before, It reminds me of that other movie. That is a feeling that i had for the majority of the movie, but for the most part, this film is great.
In conclusion for this review i would say that "Coco" is a story that we have seen before, but is told in a very unique way. Has amazing characters, the animation is great, the music is awesome, and is a great movie for kid to appreciate. I will give "Coco" a 8/10.
Get Out (2017)
Get Out - Movie review
"Get out" is a movie that came out last year and is directed by first time director Jordan Peele. This film is about an interracial couple between a black man (Daniel Kaluuya) called Chris and a white woman (Allison Williams) called Rose, and now Chris with Rose go on vacation at the house were there parents live . In that house Chris meets Rose's family and he doesn't feel so comfortable in this environment, he feels awkward and weird and that is meanly because he is black. And later on in the movie we find out some deeps secrets about this family and maybe some dark stuff is going to get him.
Now look, before i saw this film i was really excited, because i watch some of the review from professional critics and they were saying that this film was a masterpiece, a unique experience. In Rotten Tomatoes this film has 99%. So this film instantly went into my radar but i didn't have the chance to see it until this year. And now the Academy Awards nominated this film for four Oscars including Best picture, director, actor and screenplay. This film supposedly had all positive, and now i got the chance to watch it and...well, this is my viewpoint.
I don't hate "Get Out", i think it is a good movie, but i don't think it is a great movie. I was kind of disappointed with this film to be honest. But let's talk about the positives things first.
Daniel Kaluuya gave a terrific performance here, thought out this film we see this character progress and change, and i did care about him in some of hard-core scenes, he did a good job. Jordan Peele's direction was good, there are some things in this film that kind of reminded me of the way Stanley Kubrick directed his films. From the way the opening scenes were going along i was enjoying it. From the way the shots are made and the amazing score, it feel like i was watching a horror film from the 90's. The tension and the suspense surrounding this house and this family is very well done and when a character is in danger you feel that danger. This movie also knows how to make the comedy pop, in movie like this you expect to see the scary things pop out , and this movie does that, but also knows how to make the film funny at times. And you laugh when you are suppose to be laughing, there is not weird sentiment of: We should be laughing or should be scary? - The film doesn't do that.
That is what i loved about this film, but, as always, this film has flaws. I think that the major problem that i have with this film is the tone. This film for the majority of it is a suspense movie, things pop out, weird stuff happens. But in the final scene of the movie, it feels like a completely different film. I not going to spoil it of course, but for me just didn't work and i felt that the end of the film was kind of messy. Another flaw with the film for me is LilRel Howery's character. In this film he plays a friend of Kaluuya's character and he is always talking in the phone, and for the majority of the film his character was very funny and Howery was doing a good job as this character, i felted that by the end is was useless. I mean he does things in the movie for sure, but he didn't added to much to film beside some funny jokes and thats it. I also felted that this movie was a little too long, and there are some scenes were Chris goes out of the house to take pictures of things because he is a photographer, and from that scenes, i'm out. There are boring and it doesn't help too much to the film.
Guys, like i said at the beginning of my review, i don't hate this movie. But i thinks is getting a little overrated. The hype and excitement for this movie is putting this film very high and in my opinion it doesn't deserves it. My best way to describe this film is comparing it with another film i saw a couple years ago called "American Sniper", that film got a lot of positives reviews, got academy awards nominations, and it was put as an amazing war film. But when i saw it i was kind of disappointed with that film too. That is my exact feeling with this movie, for me "Get Out" is 2017's "American Sniper". Is a good film for sure, but is not a great one. But as always i'm just giving my honest opinion here. If you loved this movie, good for you, if you hated this movie, good for you also, all the opinions are welcome here. For me this was good horror movie and i had fun with it at times, and because of that i'm going to give this film a 7/10.
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) - Movie review
"Birdman" is a film written and directed by Alejandro G. Iñarritu, which is in my opinion one of the best mexican directors of all time. This film is about an actor called Riggan (Michael Keaton) who is very famous for the role of a superhero called Birman that he portrayed back in 1992. But now in today's times we get to see this actor in the lowest point of his career, and during this point of his life he is involved in a theater acting in a play, and the film is about how he has to move foward this project along to get everything working.
I going to be honest here, the first time i watched this film was back in 2014, i saw this film in theaters. I was younger back then and my first reaction to this film was: I like this film, is an enjoyable watch. But yesterday my brain said to me (i don't now why): Hey Max, maybe you should watch "Birdman" again. So i watched this film again last night, and oh my god...I cannot believe that when i saw this film the first time, i said: Is a good movie. The only word that i can describe this film is a masterpiece.
This kind of films are not make as usual as some people may think, "Birdman" is a film that is very simple and so original. This entire film is just one take, i don't know how they edited this movie. I mean, there are parts of the movie where we see characters walking into dark rooms and you can say: Thats were they cut that scene - but in this film it feels unnoticeable, and it also makes you wander what is going to happen next, makes it unpredictable, and it works at second viewing. The cinematography here is amazing, Emmanuel Lubezki is a master at what he does. The performances in this film are all fantastic, Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, all the performances were impeccable. This movie also features a very simple score, that is just made almost entirely with drums.
All things make "Birman" a great movie, but the thing that i'm not going to forget about his film is that it also talks about movies, blockbusters, reviews or critics, parent issues, movie roles, actors. This film is also very philosophical in that aspect and i loved it, and it was easily my favorite part of this movie.
Guys, in the end, "Birman" is a cinematic masterpiece, is a movie that to be really appreciated you have to see the little messages that are hidden beneath the surface, and if you catch them all, this movie will be unforgettable for you. See this film, is you are a film lover, this movie will blown your mind with amazing cinematography, great performances, incredible direction, and an amazing script. I love every second of this film and this film totally deserves a 10/10.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Thor: Ragnarok - Movie review
I wasn't a big fan of Thor. I thought that he was just another powerful character to fulfill the avengers crew. That were my thoughts on him until i watched this film. "Thor: Ragnarok" is my second favorite marvel film next to "Captain America: Civil War", this film did what Winter Soldier did for Captain America back in 2014. That was my exact reaction with this film.
"Thor: Ragnarok" is about Thor and how he has to stop Hella, the goddess of death portrait by Cate Blanchett. That is really the plot of this film, is really simple, but the thing that makes this film so great is the thing that does to the Thor character, it changes completely. In this film, Thor is really the god of thunder, is not just a person with a big hammer flying around. This guy is now a true god, and a really badass one. And that is thanks to the way this character is written and with Chris Hemsworth's performance, makes Thor a really awesome avenger, and one that you can relate to.
Talking about the performances in this film, they were all very good, Mark Ruffalo, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, even Tika Waititi as Korg, was phenomenal. Jeff Goldblum as a Grandmaster, was amazing, as well as Cate Blanchett as Hella. Tom Hiddleston is once again great as Loki, and i love the ark between him and Thor. I also like the way the handle Heimdall in this film, he was great and Idris Elba is very good here.
Another big thing that makes this film really great, is the fact that is so funny and is such a great time, there is barely a moment when you're bored in "Thor: Ragnarok". The other Thor films were serious and at times, i wasn't too invested on the story. Here in "Ragnarok" is the other way around, this film completely changes everything, the tone, the score, which by the way is great, is like earing a score for a sci-fi movie from the 80's.
So in the end, "Thor: Ragnarok" was the type of film i was expecting since i first saw the trailer, it gave me what i wanted and more, it was funny, is was an incredible experience, and i truly recommend that you watch it even if you are not a big comic book movie fan. And this movie truly deserves a 10/10.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Movie review
As a huge Star Wars fan i went to saw this film, but also with an open mind to certain things. The first i saw this movie was on December 14th of 2017, and i found it a pretty good Star Wars movie. Better than "The Force Awakens", but i didn't review it because i want it to see it a second time before i start to note my review. I watched it a second time tonight on January 10th of 2018, and it confirms to me that this is my third favorite Star Wars movie.
"Star Wars: Episode VIII" is the next chapter in the Star Wars saga when we meet again with the character of the previous film, "Episode VII". And this film is about how this characters have an adventure in a galaxy far, far away. That's all i'm gonna say about the plot of this movie because you have to see it, if i say more about the plot i would ruin the experience for you and i don't like to do spoiler movie reviews.
To star out let's talk about the good things of this movie: The performances are all great in the movie, especially from Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver an Mark Hamill. Mark does a pretty job at showing a damaged version of Luke Skywalker that we have never seen before. Daisy once again is brilliant in this film as Rey, this movie show us things to learn more about her character and she was great. Adam Driver killed it as Kylo Ren, this continues to be a magnificent villain and Adam is fabulous here.
The special effects are very well done, as well as the sound editing. The way they handle the camera in certain scenes, it makes the film better. One in particular involving a huge space battle involving bombers. Some arcs in the movie are very well executed, like Poe Dameron's arc.
Talking about the arcs in the film, this leads to my negatives with the film. Finn and Rose's arc in particular. Their arc feels lie the movie stops and becomes another sci-fi movie. There is this planet that they have to go and when they are there it feels like a completely different film. Is like watching a futuristic sci- fi movie on earth with Star Wars characters in it, it just useless. I mean, this arc in important later in the film, but the execution of it feels like another film, it doesn't feels like an Star Wars movie. That's my only flaw with The Last Jedi.
"The Last Jedi" is a great adventure and an exciting one as well. It does a very good job at taking characters in certain directions and also giving the fans a ton of surprises and unexpected things. I can't way to see "Episode IX" and see how this trilogy concludes. Like i said i think that Episode VIII is better than Episode VII, but i'm gonna give it the same rating that i did for "The Force Awakens". I'm gonna give "Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi" a 9/10.
The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017)
The Hitman's Bodyguard - Movie review
I remember when i went to the theatre to see a movie last year, and while i was waiting for my film to be shown, a trailer for this movie appeared and i was interested in this movie. It look like a movie just for fun and a good time, and this movie delivers that in every way.
This movie is about Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) and how he has to protect an assasin called Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) to eventually get him on a trial, which only has 27 hours to get there.
This film is very funny and that is mostly with the chemistry between Michael and Darius, they are very different people, but they have to work together to get to the trial and they have to learn to how to put their differences aside. I really like the chemistry between them and they were very entertaining in the action sequences as well. The camera work in this film is good, i wouldn't say is great, but it is acceptable. There are some scenes which are very well done, and another scenes there are just ok. The movie is a lot of fun, and that is the best aspect of it. I didn't go to see this movie to see a great oscar worthy movie, i went to see a entertaining film. And it didn't disappoint me at all.
Sonia Kincaid is played by Salma Hayek, and is great to see her, she is very funny. As well as Samuel L. Jackson, a lot of the comedy comes from him. Ryan Reynolds wasn't bad, he was good, but he wasn't has great as Salma or Samuel.
Ask for flaws in the movie, yes there are some flaws. For example, Gary Oldman's character wasn't good realized, he gave a good performance and his accent work on the film, but his character wasn't as compelling as Ryan's or Samuel's. There is this one scene were Ryan Reynolds is giving a monologue on a tiny bar, and it cut together with an action scene. Now look, this scene is very funny, but when it cuts back to Ryan, the green screen is so noticeable that it took out of the movie, and after it happened i was still thinking about it and kin of bug me. Also in the second act there is this twist that happened in the film and i suppose that when i was only 30 minutes of the run time of this movie, it was very predictable.
Ryan's character has a loved interest in this film, and i really didn't care about it, i didn't care about Michael and how he wants this girl he likes. And can be kind of a let down because is shown thought out the entire film, and in the end, it was, in my opinion, useless.
Ending with this review i want to say that, i really enjoy watching this movie, it is ridicules, and it knows it. If you want to see an entertaining film and pass the time this movie is going to do that, it will entertain you. Is not a masterpiece, is just pure action-fun. And for that reason this film gets a 7/10.
Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017)
Star Wars: Battlefront II - Game review
This is my first game review ever, and i'm not an expert on videogames reviews, but i love them and i've played them my entire life. With "Battlefront II" i decided to make one.
I'm a huge Star Wars fan, and i'm a big fan of videogames, and with the release of this game obviously i was very excited to play it and to know how the game was gonna play out. Specially because before that, i played EA's first "Star Wars: Battlefront"
This is a very fun game, is not the best game ever made, but still a very enjoyable game. "Star Wars: Battlefront II" is in my opinion a game that is very controversial, some people are gonna say that this game is really bad and there are gonna be some people that are gonna say that is very good, if i have to choose a side, i don't know where to go. I think that i'm one of those people that are in the middle. I enjoy playing this game, but, at times, the game became kind of boring for me and that is mostly with the repetitive nature that this game has. We are going to talk about the flaws present in the game later, now let's talk about the great stuff.
This game has some very awesome things like for example the multiplayer stuff and the arcade modes. I really enjoyed playing this battles as the clone troopers, or traveling all over the galaxy across the three Star Wars eras. Playings as the heroes and the villains in the game, is very fun to play and i like the control for all the characters. Talking about the heroes and the villains in the game, i have to say that Kylo Ren, Darth Maul and Rey are my favorites new ones, they are phenomenal. I love the fact that Billy Dee Williams and Daisy Ridley came back to do the voices of Lando and Rey, they are great with their voice work. There are some heroes like Lando, Luke and Boba Fett that, in my opinion, have improved over the past game "Star Wars: Battlefront".
The campaign mode in Battlefront II is very fun, the story surrounding Iden Versio and the Inferno Squad is very interesting. And the story is even more interesting if you are a big Star Wars fan, the experience is gonna be better for you if you are a true fan of the source material like me. The cut scenes in Battlefront II are some of the best that i have seen on a video game console ever. The graphics are fantastic, some of the best on PS4 with out a doubt.
I bought the deluxe edition of this game. And if you want to progress faster in the game and you want to have some really awesome skins for your characters, is worth the other $15 dollars. But if you just want to play the game, you are not missing anything special that will change your game experience at all.
Like i said before, this game has some flaws and some of them are: The campaign mode, is very repetitive. You only do four types of missions, the normal ones, some heroes missions, flying missions, and missions involving vehicles like an AT-AT, that's it. The story is very fun and interesting, but the gameplay is not that good enough. Another flaw that i have with the game is the flying controls, i don't like them at all. At least for me, it took me like 1 or 2 weeks to know how to fly well to not crash to an asteroid every second. Also the star card mode in which you get the card to make you soldier better in combat is very dumb. Mostly because you have to get coins to buy boxes that will give you those cards that you want. You can buy the star card if you want, but to buy it, you have to get another type of coins that are harder to get, and that is kind a problem specially with the players that are playing games like "Battlefront II" for the first time. Another issue that i have with the game, is that some of the heroes are not available, and you have to buy them with the coins that you get in the game. And with that you are forced to play in the multiplayer maps to get them, which kind of disappoint me.
So in the end, "Star Wars: Battlefront II" is a very enjoyable game, is not flawless but if you want to pass the time killing some stormtroopers as Luke Skywalker, you are going to have fun playing it. Battlefront II is in my opinion better that the first Battlefront game that was released in 2015, and i'm having a good time playing it. If you are a Star Wars and video game fan, you should check this game out, and i'm going to give it a 7/10.
It (2017)
IT - Movie review
I'm not a big fan of thrillers or horror movies, but when i eared that this movie was happening, i was very excited and very curios to see what this movie could live up to.
"IT" is a movie that is about how a group of kid in the little town of Derry, and how this kids come together to fight against Pennywise. A demonic entity that has taken this town over the years and now he has come back to cause some disasters.
This movie is one of the best thrillers in recent years, not only for the originality, but for the way is directed, edited, and produced. The production design here is very good, very creepy and dark. From the way this film is directed, you don't even know when the clown will show up again and when is shows up, is very scary.
Talking about the clown in this movie (Pennywise) Bill Skarsgård does a magnificent job in this film, he is very scary. Is a very original villain and i was very happy with the way they handled his look and the visual effects to make it even more scary. Keeping on with the performances, the kids in this movie are brilliant, each kid has his own fear, and Pennywise will use that to manipulate them. And you see their fear be represented by things that Pennywise show to them, but also in real life. The tension inside this group of kids that they are going to fight against something that they don't understand all that much, is great, and you really feel that you are with them in this battle, and you feel that you want to help them.
Inside this movie there are some things that took my breath away, and I couldn't be happier with this film and i want to see it again.
This is one of the best movies of the year, but there are some issues that at times distracted me. For example, in the first act, they show every single fear of each of this kids and we see some very horrifying things happen to them, this all segment feels like they have to show their fear quick because they are gonna keep going, and it feels kind of rushed. Those scenes are not bad, in fact are very good and breath taking , but i don't like the way they put them together. Also, in this group of kid, there is one called Mike. This young actor give a very good performance, but his character is one that we don't learn so much about. We learn about what is afraid of and all that stuff, but we don't know anything else about him. And in some scenes, the group has to come back together, and he just randomly shows up. Instead of the other boys that the talk before they meet again.
This are issues that bug me, but not in a great way like "¡Aaah!, ¡I hate that!" Is nothing like that. This are some issues that could happen in any movie so, doesn't really matter.
So guys, "IT" is a very good thriller and one the best Stephen King's adaptations of all time. I looking forward to the sequel in 2019 (I'm not sure if that is the year that the sequel is released) and this is, with out a doubt, one of my favorites movies of 2017.
Split (2016)
Split - Movie review
"Split" is the movie that has confirmed that M. Night Shyamalan is more than back. This movie is a very good thriller, but now let's talk about why.
"Split" is about a man who has 23 personalities inside his mind and one of them has kidnap 3 teenage girls. This girls are trying to escape from this guy and we learn more about him in the scenes involving his psychologist.
This films features one the best performances of the year, James McAvoy is oscar worthy in this film. Every personality is very different from the rest, and just with the way he talks or looks at someone, you can tell which personality is. Anya Taylor-Joy as the main girl was very good, this actress is getting better with each film that she is in.
Another thing that makes this film so great is the way is shot, the cinematography here is beautiful. That together with the lighting and the amazing score, makes this film very claustrophobic. You do feel like you are in this space with them.
This film is very well directed and the way they handle the score, you don't even know when the score will be introducing a very tensioned scene. And that the best thrillers do.
The ending of this film, is breath taking. I can't talk about it because this is a spoiler free review, but the way this movie ends, is just so good that OMG, in my opinion, this is my favorite ending of the year (2017).
If we talks about flaws in this movie, there is some expositional scenes that are kind of boring. The other two girls that were also captured by one the personalities of McAvoy, their performances were not that great and im some scenes, there are kind of annoying. But, this flaws didn't bother me in any way now that i watched it for a second time. Once you accept the story that is in front of you, this movie gets even better.
I love this movie guys, is more than recomendable, is one the best movies of the year and i would love to see a sequel of this movie. And thats why i'm going to give it a 10/10.
Avatar (2009)
Avatar - Movie review
I remember see this movie in theaters marketed as "The ultimate 3D experience" that everyone has to go see it. This movie really surprised me when i watched in 2009, but upon rewatch, the movie it does has some flaws and is not perfect.
So "Avatar" is about a group of humans who go to the colony on a moon called Pandora, is a moon with a indigena species called the Na'vi. And the humans uses this bodies called Avatars in which they get inside in and they look like a Na'vi. The main protagonist of this movie is Jake Sully (Sam Worthington's character) who has the mission to interact and meet this aliens, in the way they think, their culture, etc.
James Cameron does something very risky with this film and is the fact of using green and blue screens to make the sets of Pandora, and use CGI for the Na'vi. This could potentially ruin your realistic film and turn it to a cartoon. But Cameron used very well, the visual effects here are amazing and very well done. And is well incorporated with the real human beings on set. I was very amazed while watching this movie seeing all this creatures and plants that are not real, and feeling that this are real living beings and feeling that Pandora exist in real life. I do feel like Pandora is a place that you can visit and makes this experience 10 times better. The look, sounds, lighting, and great work from the people that did the especial effects for this movie, made Pandora a very beautiful and unique place.
Moving on to the action sequences, this movie is recorded very well. The camerawork is good, and the sequences are exciting and breath taking. When you see Jake Sully or another character like Neytiri in danger, you feel that danger. Talking about characters, The Na'vi population feels like a real family, when you see them on screen, you care some much for this people that makes this movie more human. This movie delivers a lot of messages of the human raze and what we are as an species, for the important that our habitat is and how important is for us to take care of, which i found very powerful. The editing and directing of this film makes it in my opinion, one the best sci-fi movies of the past decade.
This film revolucionated something that is, in my opinion, very especial. And that is the 3D cinema. The 3D cinema before this movie was something that was very unique and expensive, not everyone could afford to pay to see a movie in 3D and it wasn't that good. Because those films were just made for 3D, and for experience things on 3D, but the films didn't have a very good story or a great character ark. But this movie was the one that said: "Hey, we can make a very good movie with great visual effects and make it for a great 3D experience"
Is a very good sci-fi movie with an unique vision that James Cameron nailed so well that this could potentially transform into a franchise. At least for me, i could watch a trilogy of this films.
Like every movie, this one has some flaws too. For example, number one, Stephen Lang was great in the movie, but his character was one that did a lot exposition. At the beginning of the film, he talks about the anatomy of the Na'vi and talked about how their weapons works, and is not that important actually, is just more info about a fictional alien specie. You can skip that part, and the movie will be the same. There are some passing issues in the first act and the end of the film, at least for me, is like a roller coaster emotionally. Sometimes the emotion is very high, and sometimes is on the ground.
In the end guys, "Avatar" is a very good movie with great characters, and beautiful visual effects. It does has some problems but that is to be expected in a film. So my recommendation is, watch it, is worth it.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Movie review
With the upcoming release of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" i've decided to make a review of this movie.
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is a movie directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Harrison Ford, and many more. This movie takes place after "Return of the jedi" back in 1983 and is about the resistance has to complete a very important mission for the destiny of the galaxy and the first order has to stop it.
Let's talk about the positive things, the visual effects are fantastic. J.J. is a director that is known for his ability to combine the CGI effects and the practical ones at just the right level, and it shows. By the way this is a very well directed movie and very well edited too. All this together with John Williams's score, you do feel like Star Wars is more than back into the big screen.
The performances in this movie are some of the best of the entire saga with out a dude. John Boyega as Finn is fantastic and Daisy Ridley is magnificent as Rey. She is easily the best part of this movie. Adam Driver was awesome as Kylo Ren, one of the best movie villains in recent years. Harrison Ford as Han Solo is very good, and the friendship between Han and Chewie still there and is very fresh.
This is a very funny movie, in my opinion this is the funniest movie of the entire saga. And almost all the comedy comes from BB-8, which is awesome and i loved it in this film.
"Episode VII" has some very good battle sequences and the sound mixing was great, you feel the action almost directly in your face and is awesome to see.
The easter eggs and references to the other Star Wars movies were also great, and there are shown with respect to the saga and the fans of the source material. I like the fact that the references there are not in the entire movie, which i'm very happy. Because this movie had a danger to doing that like "Jurassic World" did it that year, but thanks to the force, that didn't happened.
I loved this movie, but it does have some flaws. For example, Snoke and Maz Kanata. This movie has this two CGI characters here, but they don't matter all that much. There are scenes when we see Snoke talking to some people and is not that interesting or important. The same thing happened with Maz, she was and old lady who sometimes talks about other Star Wars things, but is not interesting. But, don't worry, there are not in the entire movie.
This movie is one for my favorites movies of Star Wars and it is i the 4th place in my ranking of the Star Wars movies. I've already watched "The Last Jedi" and is amazing, but I need to watch it a second time before i do the review. Those are my thoughts of "Star Wars: Episode VII" and thats way i'm going to give it a 9/10.
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Alien: Covenant - Movie review
This movie was one of most anticipated movies of the year and also the fact that this movie is a prequel to Alien but a sequel to Prometheus, a film that a liked quit a bit, had a lot to live up to. So, like most people, I was really excited to see what Ridley Scott was going to do with this film and well
let's talk about it.
Alien: Covenant I think it's an enjoyable film, I do not think it's a great film. To be honest, I was kind of disappointed with this film. If you are a big fan of Alien and you just want to see the Xenomorph kill some people and see a lot of action, well then watch Alien Covenant, you will have fun with it. Now if you are expecting a great sci-fi movie with great characters and emotional arks and big action scenes, then this movie will disappoint you.
I'm an Alien fan, and I a enjoy watching this movie but, I was disappointed mainly with the script, but let's talk about what works in Alien Covenant and what doesn't.
The cinematography here is one of the best of the year, visually, this film it's a masterpiece, everything looks in camera and it's great the way Ridley Scott directed this film also. The visual effects were mostly great and the sound editing was amazing. Another thing that I really like was Michael Fassbender's performance, his character plays a mayor role in this film and he did a great job. I really like that this movie is Rated R because, there are some scenes that were violent has hell, and this is the aspect of this movie that I most enjoyed during the entire run-time.
Now the things that didn't work in this movie. It's very noticeable when someone is gonna die, they go that direction when someone it's going to smoke somewhere or take a shower, and it's so obvious that he is going to die because of the Xenomorph that is walking around. I didn't like the fact that the entire crew of this ship it's so disposable, there is no character that I felt a connection with and the set-up for the main hero it's bland and so uncleared, that when this character is in danger, I didn't care about it. This movie it's 2 hours long, and I think that 10 to 15 minutes could be reduced from that run-time and the film will be same that we got.
In conclusion, this movie entertain me as an Alien fan, but as a film lover this film disappointed me in a lot of ways. I can watch this film for entertainment but I can't watch it looking for a masterpiece like the first Alien back in 1979. And that why Alien: Covenant gets a 5 out of 10.
Dunkirk (2017)
Dunkirk - Movie review
In my opinion Christopher Nolan did it again with Dunkirk, this movie was realistic as hell. This movie is about the evacuation of 400.000 men during world war II and when I am saying that this movie it's about this event, it's about that, because this movie doesn't have specific characters to relate to or care about. All the characters in this movie are just soldiers trying to survive to this situation.
Like I said in previous reviews, I'm a big fan of war films. And most of them are really good because they tell the story about soldiers trying to survive to horrible situations. Dunkirk is about this event in history, and just that.
If you are looking for a film with realistic characters and people with families going into the war zone well Dunkirk will like you disappoint you because you are not going to get that.
Well, let's move out to the filmmaking. This movie is recorded so well that when you are watching the movie makes you have this sense of discovery to how they make this. Nolan directed and wrote this movie, and you can see it. The direction and how the script works out it's beautiful, this is easily one of the best scripts of the entire year, and this movie doesn't have too much dialogue, which makes it even more powerful when we look back to the story. The way Nolan directed this film makes you be terrified by how the Germans are trying to kill this people. This movie it's not so violent, there is a lot of scenes were some people die, but you just listen the screams and the bombs exploiting around this people.
This movie has a presence of fear and suspense during the entire run time, and this feel it's created thanks to the great sound editing and the incredible score composed by Hans Zimmer, this is the greatest score that I have listened in any war film ever.
So guys, Dunkirk was even better that I expected. Nolan has made my favorite film of 2017 this far.
The Imitation Game (2014)
The Imitation Game - Movie Review
Since I was a child, I have love war films. Those ones were full of action, amazing battle sequences, and realistic visual effects that made that war, real. But when I saw The imitation game, I was surprised for how this movie It's about war, but doesn't have action in it.
Recently, I watched this movie again because I haven't seen it in a couple years, and this movie has got even better with the years that have passed. It's a masterpiece, but now let's talk about why The imitation game it's so good.
This movie It's about Alan Turing. A person really good at solving puzzles and also very good at math, has to decode Enigma. Enigma It's an unbreakable code that was made by the Nazis during WWII so they could communicate with each other and organize an attack. So the plot of this movie It's about how Alan Turing and his team decode this code to win the war. That's it, I mean there it's a lot to talk about the plot, but I won't tell you more about it because in my opinion that will be kind of spoiler territory.
Moving on to the filmmaking of this movie, first, it's very well directed. Morten Tyldum did such a good work directing this film, the way he cuts the scenes, the camera-work, the editing, It's looks fantastic and when I watch this movie makes me feel that I am in this time period. The script of this film it's so well made that this movie feels real, suspenseful, dramatic, and emotionally powerful. All this characters are so well realized that you look at them like they were real people trying to solve this situation and end this war that is killing everyone.
The performances are all great, Benedict Cumberbatch it's one of my favorites actors in the world and as Alan Turing was amazing. This is the best performance that I have seen from him in any movie or TV show. I love him as Doctor Strange and Sherlock Holmes but, if i have to choose one, I choose Alan Turing. Another one that shines it's Keira Knightley as Joan Clarke, great performance and it wasn't a surprise that she was nominated for best actress in a supporting role.
The imitation game it's a beautiful movie, is such a great and important achievement. This story should be known by anybody, really make yourself a favor and watch this movie.
War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
War for the planet of the apes - Movie review
When i eared that the third prequel of the planet of the apes was happening i was obviously very excited, because this planet of the apes series so far has been really good, "Rise" was awesome, "Dawn" was one my favorites movies of the year 2014. So i went to see this film and... oh my god i loved it.
I'm not going to talk about the plot because this film it's one of those films that if you don't know nothing going in, you will have a really awesome cinematic experience. This film once again has Andy Serkis as Caesar AKA "The best ape ever" and his performance in this film it's incredible, i would nominate this guy right now for "Best actor in a leading role". What you have seen in "Dawn" it's nothing compared to what he does in "War".
The fact that the apes are so human in this film, you watch them like if they were people, not as apes. And that is the big irony of this movie, that the apes are more human than the real humans them selves. Speaking of humans in the film, Woody Harrelson gave such a good performance that makes this villain evil and terrifying, and you understand why he think the way he does, and why he does such things to keep the human race out of the extinction.
This movie featured an awesome score, breath taking visual effects, good characters, good sub plots like the young girl that appears in the poster, and the final product it's one of the best movies of 2017.
It's one of the best movie trilogies of all time, so what are you waiting for? Go watch it, i'm sure that you are going to enjoy it.
Memento (2000)
Memento - Movie review
This movie is a masterpiece and it's one of my favorites of all time. First, this film was directed by Christopher Nolan who is my favorite director, this guy is excellent at his job so when i was going to watch Memento, i was very excited to see what he could do with this film.
This movie is about Leonard Shelby who is a person that is trying to solve a crime involving his wife but he has this condition that makes him forget things very quickly so he has write all the puzzle pieces of this crime somewhere to solve it.
In the opening scene of Memento you are instantly into the film and makes you have this feeling of mystery and you ask yourself to many questions even before the movie really starts. The one thing that makes Memento so great and different from other films is the structure that this film has, which Nolan nailed perfectly. Christopher Nolan directs this film so well that the structure it self makes you have Leonard's condition, because you are trying to put all the pieces together, but has the movie goes, you forget things that happened before, and that's why you can't see this movie once.
Every time that you watch this movie you find something new, and it's really great.
Do i have to talk about the performances here? My god, Guy Pearce was so good in this film. The fact that this character it's so real, you don't even noticed that he is acting. One actress that also was great in this movie was Carrie-Anne Moss as Natalie, i think that it's one of her best performances.
All this along with the amazing editing, the script, the performances by all the actors, the directing, and the rest of the work that was done by really talented people. Makes Memento one the best movies ever made.
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Best Spider man film this far!
This film reminded me why i love Spider man, Tom Holland es very good in this role as Peter Parker and Spider man both, i felt a connection with him and to all the things that happened to him during the film. This is just a teenager trying to make a difference and save the world from the evil villains that are present in his area.
The movie has some very good performances, good chemistry between all the characters including the main villain. Is energetic, is very funny, has some very breath taking action sequences, and i think that most of Spider man fans will be very satisfied with this film.
Is not flawless, has some issues like, there is this one character that if i were the director of this film, i just put this character at the end of the movie and not during the entire film, because in some scenes is annoying, in some scenes this character is very funny, but in my opinion is unnecessary to have this person in the entire run time of Spider man: Homecoming. There are some scenes in this movie that there not that interesting and i was like "can we see Spidey again? this is kind of boring". But over all, this film entertain me and i was smiling when i was getting out of the theater i couldn't be happier with this film.
Go see it if you enjoy big super hero films and i can't wait to see this character in other marvel movies.
