The Departed (2006)
Why can't people appreciate the movie for what it is?
I've been reading a lot about The Departed and how it compares with Infernal Affairs, the original screenplay. I have seen Infernal Affairs I but not the other 2,and I saw The Departed this past weekend. People need to understand that although the idea for The Departed was taken from Infernal Affairs, it's a movie all it's own. I can understand fans of the original not liking The Departed AS MUCH, but too many people are saying The Departed is a bad movie, which I find absurd. The movie was made to fit our culture, Americanized if you will, and did a damn good job at doing so. I know people are going to tear me apart because I'm an American male along with being a huge Scores fan,but I personally liked The Departed better(and yes I saw Infernal Affairs before The Departed). It hard to use the word "better" when talking about the remake/remodeling of a movie but I''ll dare say it. The way Monacan took the original script and tuned it to our culture and way of life was brilliant, along with Scorsese's direction and music selection. I wrote this in response to original fans, many Asian, telling me that The Departed was garbage and couldn't compare to Infernal Affairs. Maybe they don't like it as much as the original, but there's no denying that this film is one of the most powerful and moving films to come out in a long time. A lot of people are taking credit away from Monacan and Scores because it's a "remake" but they did a lot more than remake and Americanize this movie, they immortalized it and turned it into an instant classic. They didn't simply take the screenplay and script from Infernal Affairs, they took the idea and changed, expanded and tuned it into a brilliant film OF IT'S OWN...You can't take anything away from The Departed because of Infernal Affairs, so stop being ignorant because you prefer Infernal Affairs and give credit where credit is due.
