The Invisibles (2008)
What a delight - didn't want it to end
Ignore the Nay-sayers. After a slow start, this mini-series takes on a barmy life of its own. It's daft, funny, at times full of suspense and poses some interesting moral conundrums about love, family, loyalty, doing the right thing and being accountable. I couldn't help rooting for them, although they really didn't deserve it! The acting is lovely and it's wonderful to find a drama with the excellent Warren Clarke (RIP) really pulling out all the stops. Jenny Agutter is sublime and Antony Head is still gorgeous, even as a criminal. At times the interactions are really moving, especially in the last few episodes. No spoiler alerts, but the final episode was a blast!
Repeat (2021)
Ignore the low IMDB rating - it's a gem
Not going to give any spoiler alerts; suffice it to say this indie film has heart, intrigue, mystery and a slightly Dr Who feel to it (in a good way). Suspend disbelief for a while and enjoy the ride.
St. Vincent (2014)
An absolute delight!
What a lovely, absorbing film reflecting on the vagaries of the human condition and reminding us of the value of love, communication and friendship. I noticed the quality of the light - especially golden hour - which gave an ethereal feel to the proceedings. Thank you to all concerned. I already want to watch it again!
Grantchester: Episode #7.2 (2022)
Losing its direction
Too many oddities occurring in this episode as others have observed, particularly concerning Will's personal life. As wife of vicar now, I can't believe that in the 50's the shenanigans he gets up to wouldn't be noticed by the congregation & dealt with by the archdeacon (viz Sidney in earlier episodes).
Grantchester: Episode #7.6 (2022)
What an episode!
We laughed, we cried, we were surprised, shocked & eventually relieved (spoiler alert!). Congratulations to all the cast & writers. Apart from episode 2, which lost its way a bit, this season was stellar. Thanks to all concerned 🙏😊
Out of Time (2021)
Full of heart right to the end
No spoiler alert, but it's worth watching for the ending. Imaginative, at times emotional and good fun with well-Integrated sci-fi elements. Love the 50's courtesy - something that's lacking these days.
Robot Overlords (2014)
This movie takes on new meaning in Lockdown
The opening few scenes are striking to watch - citizens being instructed to return to their home by an enormous robot & getting zapped for non-compliance. This whole movie has echoes of the constraints we've been living under for the past 18 months, exploring themes of betrayal, collaboration, and courage. It's enjoyable, thought-provoking and a lesson in loyalty. Also, robots. Good stuff.
Rose and Maloney: Alan Richmond (2005)
Series stopped much too soon
This show represents some of the best lockdown binge watching we've done. This series is so well executed, with powerful storylines, great acting and such heart. We watch a lot of crime drama - this is on a par with some of the best. Why oh why were no more episodes made?
Paper Man (2009)
Paper Man is a better title than Unlikely Hero
What a whimsical, heart-warming movie. It's a poignant exploration of internal emptiness, a search for meaning and the long shadows cast by loss. How do you fill the empty pages when you've can't find the words to put down onto paper?
Midsomer Murders: The Point of Balance (2019)
Last Tango in Midsomer
OK, it was a bit convoluted, but the theme of father/son dynamics was well-handled & I was rather moved by the détente in the Barnaby household at the end. Great dancing too!
Midsomer Murders: Blood on the Saddle (2010)
Ride 'em, cowboy!
This episode is really entertaining. The cowboy theme and nods to wellknown Western movie tropes is well observed. It's also a study on the blurring between fantasy and reality and what can go wrong when an interest becomes an obsession. The denouement stand off at the Midsomer Corral is seen through the eyes of the villain to great effect - he has detached from reality and it's chilling. And you get to see Barnaby as Wyatt Earp! What's not to love!
