Reptile (2023)
Excellent story, acting
Well written story and fabulous acting. The story seems a typical detective drama (think Gone Girl) but begins to twist away from this trope toward a more complex understanding of right and wrong.
Benicio del Toro, as always, memorably immerses himself in the role. Surprised at Alicia Silverstone's casting in this type of movie, but really believed her portrayal and her relationship with BdT. Justin Timberlake strikes the right tone and the rest of the cast, from Eric Bogosian to Michael Pitt were believable.
We thoroughly enjoyed it, start to finish and would watch this director's work again.
Echo 3 (2022)
Started off well but...
First couple of episodes were pretty good, but by the time we finished part 1, I started to wonder if the plot was written by AI chat. Seriously, characters began doing random things like, suddenly Bambi is an alcoholic that needs to be strapped down for detox? Or Violeta goes from traumatized to running around on her own, trying to interrupt the President while a marching band plays? I get that shows like this are escapist but there were so many weird turns, including the final scene...."I'm not going home with you" turns into everyone on the boat?....that we finished this out of compulsion and not enjoyment.
Ozark: The Badger (2018)
Best line of corrupt leadership, ever
Helen, talking to Marty & Wendy:
It's the first rule of power.
Those who can, sh...uhh, poop, on others.
Those who can't, clean it up.
(IMDB rules on profanity required editing of potty mouthed version)
Alias (2001)
opinion
No spoiler, just a general statement about how disappointed I am in Alias-you all write how enthralling it is but it's just a formula repeated over and over, with little depth or realism. Every week, Sidney gets three closeup looks-surprise, anguish or pain. Every week, she runs down a hall, high roundhouse kicks the snot out of someone and then returns to LA. There is so little time spent developing any character but her own that I feel sorry for the other actors who mostly get to stand around and brood. If she's not begging her prof to let her stay in the program, then she's giving her dad the 'I hate you' from her high horse look. Every week, we're treated to another puppy dog look from Will-who is cute enough to know better-or even worse, Vaughn giving her the 'I don't know how to tell you this..' look. 24 and The Shield both do much better jobs at character development. Even Get Smart had better character development, which is what Alias reminds me of, except GS was funny and high camp.
