Mrs. Henderson Presents (2005)
Not good.
This film was screened at LUFF at the NFT and I sneaked in to see it but was really disappointed by it all. Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins really have lost their way over the last couple of years, Bob Hoskins in particular has been making terrible films, culminating with Unleashed!
I usually really love stephen frears films, one of my all time favourite being 'My Beautiful Launderette' but this one felt lazy, as if he telephoned his direction in and then went on holiday immediately after.
I wish he would go back to making more edgier films, the kind that originally brought him to the publics attention.
Puritan (2005)
Superbly crafted film.
Superbly crafted film. A real surprise for me, I saw it at the LUFF screenings at the NFT. It is quite gorgeously photographed, the main colour being red, which is used throughout in very heavy shades, but this really works as it is counterpointed by deap heavy blacks. The film moves along in a very considered way, it reminded me of the steven soderbergh film 'sex, lies & videotape' in that regard.
The plot is quite multi layered in that it takes you along but you never know where you stand with it, at many points I thought I had figured its conclusion out but was double bluffed, and was wrong, so i enjoyed that aspect of it. The ending does come out of left field and I have to say i didn't really expect it, and was annoyed that I hadnt figured it out but was also pleased that it tricked me. It is the kind of film that you leave and think about for the rest of the evening. All in all an enjoyable film.
If anyone else has seen it, can you tell me the significance of the 'hand' Simon Puritan keeps drawing? This is something that I still have not figured out.
Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
Excellent Film
Excellent film. I think that about sums it up. The credit sequence is probably the best credit sequence I have seen since the se7en credit sequence.
It was very funny but done in such a clever way, with very little money, but beautifully imaginative.
I couldn't get over the choices of the actors for the film, the casting director, if they could afford a casting director, must a have a been a genius, because everyone is beautifully weird and perfect.
I am looking forward to Hess's next film
What is the director doing next, I here he might be working with Jack Black is this true??
