Mutluluk (2007)
Bliss
The film Bliss was a heart touching film. It showed us the fight between older traditions and modern traditions. The main character, Meryem, was found on a beach and was unconscious. Everyone in her town thought that she had sex with a man and she was instantly shunned. Meryem was told that she had to kill herself to keep her family's honor. She could not do so. Ali Riza calls his son, Cemal, to take her away and kill her. Meryem and Cemal instantly have a connection but he could not kill her. Through the course of the film, Cemal begins to fall in love with Meryem, but his traditional standards keep them apart. They meet a man named Irfan and he lets them work on his boat. When Irfan hears of their situation he tells Cemal that he should not let his tradition get in the way of the one he loves. The movie ends when we find out that Cemal's father was the one who raped Meryem. This movie showed us that you should not let your traditions or your upbringing get in the way of who you love and your future.
Wadjda (2012)
Wadjda
In the this film, it showed that women do not have as many rights in Saudi Arabia as they do in the United States. It was very interesting to get a different perspective of their culture. The main character, Wadja, was trying to save up for a bike to race her friend. Throughout the film we saw the way of life that the women live. We learned about marital customs and how strict the women's rules were to live their life. Overall, I liked this film. It made me very happy when Wadja got her bike in the end. This shows us that Wadja's perseverance throughout the film pays off.
Omar (2013)
Omar
This film was a very intriguing. The main character, Omar, was a freedom fighter who was very loyal to his friends. He was in love with a girl named Nadia and they were planning on getting married. He sadly gets captured by the police after ongoing their first attack. His friend, Amjad, killed a soldier that was on a base. Omar gets captured and the police try to force him to tell who the killer was. He has to do the unthinkable by working for, Agent Rami, to bring him the killer of the soldier. Loyalty and friendship are the main themes of this film because Omar is put to the test on whether to stick with his friends or go alone. In the end of the of the movie, he keeps his loyalty to Amjad by not telling the police office who actually killed the soldier. Omar is shown to be a great friend even though Amjad wasn't to him. Amjad snitched on him and even lied about getting Nadia pregnant. Also, he married the woman that Omar loved. Even after this, Omar was still a reliable friend to Amjad and didn't even snitch on him. Overall, this film showed us to choose our friends wisely and to be careful who you trust.
Xi you: Xiang mo pian (2013)

This film was very interesting and funny. The main character Xuan Zang is a demon hunter. He is different from the other demon hunters because he uses a different approach. Instead of using violence he uses a book of nursery rhymes to bring out the innocence in the demons. He meets a lady named Miss Daun who helps him hunt demons. She is always coming in to save him from the demons. Instantly she falls in love with him. Throughout the movie we see her trying to prove to him that she loves him back. Only when he realizes it, it is too late. This helps him come to his ultimate Buddha and find what he has been missing all along. Xuan Chang shows courage throughout the movie because he doesn't give up and believes in the good of the demons. He even manages to defeat the legendary Monkey King. This shows us that anything can be accomplished even when you least expect it.
Chennai Express (2013)
Chennai Express
I really liked Chennai Express movie. The word destiny plays a main role in this film. Destiny means a series of events that take place that will necessarily happen to a particular person or thing or in the future. In this film, the main character, Rahul, embarks on a journey to the small town in Tamu Nadu as a wish of his grandfather. His grandfather's last wish was to have his ashes immersed in the Holy water of Rameshwaram. In the route of his journey, he meets a woman named, Meenamma. The travel on a journey in which they fall in love. This shows that Rahul going on this journey was his destiny in finding true love and what life can be like outside the big city.
Ajeossi (2010)
The Man from Nowhere review
The film "The Man from Nowhere" is a really good film. It showed that people aren't always as they seem. The main character Cha Tae-shik was known as the creepy, quiet neighbor and pawnshop keeper that people thought would rape young children. He becomes fond of his next-door neighbor, Somi. At the beginning of the film, Somi's mother steals drugs from a drug trafficking organization. This causes Somi and Cha Tae-shik to get involved. The drug traffickers kidnap Somi and her mother, Hyo-jeong. Throughout the film we see Cha Tae-shik take many risks to get Somi back and to make sure she remains alive. He puts himself in major danger to save the one person he really cares about. He fights to save Somi from her kidnappers. This shows that he isn't as he seems. He is actually a kind, caring person that wants to protect a young girl.
Merantau (2009)
Merantau
I really liked the film Merantau. The film was about a boy named Yuda who leaves his family and home to go on his Merantau. The word Merantau means coming of age. It is a tradition among the communities young men to go to the city of Jakarta to learn how to prove themselves. Yuda does exactly this. Yuda experiences many setbacks that leave him very uncertain about his future, but he never gives up. He meets Astri and her younger brother Adit. Yuda helps defend them against human traffickers. In the end, Yuda uses his martial art skills to save Astri, Adit, and other girls that are suffering from sex trafficking. Sadly, Yuda dies while protecting others. This shows us that Yuda truly did prove himself on his Merantau by putting others before himself.
Metro Manila (2013)
The Power Struggle and Corruption of a City
I liked the film Metro Manila. It showed the power struggle of being desperate for money. Money is needed for many things. For example, Oscar and his wife, Mai, needed it for health care, food, housing, and providing for their family. These are some very significant things that are important for survival. Throughout this film, it showed Oscar being tested to his limits to provide and protect his family. It showed how far a man can go for his family. Corruption was also a big part of this movie. This was shown through the people living in the city and the city itself. It shows the amount of poverty in the Philippines and the struggle it can be to find jobs. The characters played their roles very well. It was like we were watching a documentary more than a movie because you could connect with the characters through their struggles.
