Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Disturbing for sure
We need to talk about the women. I was completely dumbfounded by the troglodite women! Spoiler here! The men of this violent tribe apparently see their female companions as means to an end. At the end of the movie you can see how they are used as human incubators. Lying flat on their backs with amputated arms and legs and stakes driven through their eyes. This image is going to stick with me for a long time...
This part of their ideology could have been played out a bit more if you ask me. Missed opportunity there! Same remark for the hills have eyes movies.
Overall I thought this one was a bit slow paced. I watched for the horror which didn't really happen till the last part of the film. We only get to see one person getting properly butchered which is too bad for a movie about a cannibalistic tribe.
Am I reaching for the stars? I don't think so. After years and years of horror movies I guess I'm just waiting for one that can still shock me. Am I desensitized? Yes, but only in the world of fiction.
If you are in the mood for some awkward yet entertaining dialogues alternated by gruesome man-splitting cannibal murder then this is the movie for you.
The Drowning (2016)
What just happened?
Either this movie sucks, or I didn't understand one bit of it.
I kept waiting for something to happen... Some event that would clear things up... but it never came.
The characters weren't particularly likable and their true motivations were never revealed.
somehow i'm still thinking I might have missed something. they couldn't just have pasted together a story with random people doing insignificant things, right?
wrong?
Arrival (2016)
Food for thought...
This thing absolutely contains spoilers!!!

Right after watching a movie, I like to go on IMDb and check out the general feel towards the film.
So a lot of people love this one, while others deem it boring, pretentious and mostly 'a waste of time'.
Ironically, time is actually the main character in the movie for all intents and purposes.
I wonder how many people truly watched this film with attention. Sure, you might find it boring if you are expecting an Independence day type of action flick, but that's not what it's about.
In many reviews I see people talking about Louise being tormented by "memories" of her daughter. Do they realize that these events are not "memories" as Such?
Imagine you were given a chance to foresee the good and the bad in your future. Feeling the torment and heartbreak of what it means to lose the purest of love. For me, the concept struck a nerve.
Honestly I'M stating the obvious in this review but I can simply not imagine the emotion is lost on some individuals on this site who call this a bad movie.
Note that I didn't even mention the aliens!
If you want to see it, I suggest you really watch it. And feel it. You'll understand what I mean.
The Mist (2017)
Refreshing
Just finishes watching the series and cried my eyes out at the ending. I may be overly emotional but I really got caught up in the drama of the main characters.
This to me is usually proof of at least decent writing and good character development.
Yes, the show touches on various subjects that you might not expect or even wish to see in a horror movie adaptation. BUT these subjects are parts of life and whether or not we like it is irrelevant. The way the characters reacted to certain 'difficulties' helps you understand what they're made of.
***spoiler alert***
I also liked that the writers expanded on the threats in the mist. It's not just monsters or huge insects this time. There's the four horsemen of the Apocalyps coming to claim a priest. You got your demons from the past, and yes, also some insects making for creepy death scenes.
Frances Conroy plays the part of the crazy lady which she does beautifully. It is her character that touched me the most in the end scene when 'nature' takes her back with her long lost baby in her arms illustrating the circle of life.
