Friends (1994)
Friendship reinvented, personified, illuminated and showcased with such beauty.
Personally i don't think 6 characters in any other show could connect to the mainstream audience as well as friends has done. Sadly i wasn't a fan when the show was actually aired prime time, but once i got the hang of it, how well has it served me with immense emotion, humor and the moral sense of living on your own terms , independent on anyone or anything. It's influence on the India urban youth is downright grand, as everyone slips in Chandler's one liners or Joeys' 'How ya doin?' or Monica's unnecessary extravagant attraction to hygiene. It has so many run of emotions and having said that, it can still be watched exclusively for its humor. I can easily entitle this as one of the funniest shows on planet earth. I remember watching it in my college days on the bed since my parent slept in the hall and even if I watched it with my headphones my laughter would screw up my parents sleep. There are so many layers to every character. There's Rachel who is a poster child glamour doll who wants to make a mark on her own and be self-sustained so starts working as a waitress. There's Monica who is a cleanliness fanatic and also a Chef by profession. There is the latter's older brother Ross who has Phd and is a paleontologist having his own dinosaur fantasies. There's Joey who is the cool and funny guy of the lot who is really popular among the girls and also a professional actor who isn't really doing well. There's sweet and very unorthodox Phoebe who likes to sing pretty offbeat songs with her guitar and is a masseuse by profession. And finally my personal favorite Chandler who throws in cringy remarks in conversations that have so much subtle sarcasm and wit and his partnership with Joey brings up some of the best bachelor Comedy there is to offer on the silver screen. On a serious note the important content displayed is that the lives of these individuals are far from perfect. In fact there are run of events
that are outright sad and depressing, but eventually someone is always there for someone else and they hold on to each other in tough times. It's one show that will resonate through your life in various forms and the echoes will last your lifetime.
The Godfather Part II (1974)
The Perfect sequel, which for me, marginally outdoes its predecessor
If you've heard of the saying lightning doesn't strike twice, guess what, you've been chaotically proven wrong here. The original movie on its own is cinematic brilliance delivered at it very best and has a cult following since generations. The second one however, is an inch even more perfect. May it be young Michael (Al Pacino) filling the boots of his infamous yet benevolent father Vito, may it be the portrayal of young Don Corleone played by Robert De Niro who is flawless at his job and may it be the transition of events before and after the movie, it all falls perfectly in place. It's also De Niro's first academy award win pretty reminiscent of the fact he subtly carves out Vito's early life struggle in America, his abandoning of his natives in Italy and rise to power in America. Diane Keaton (Kay) plays a woman who feels oppressed being a part of a family that is a part of a notorious criminal conglomerate. Robert Duvall (Tom Hagen) plays a shrewd advocate who is also the consigliere to the family. John Cazale (Fredo) plays the passive push-around as he was in the prequel but has more depth and purpose to his character. Overall it has more than what any ordinary Mafia based movie can offer. It shows the struggle of power to be the very best, and eventually the realization that the top spot isn't a single persons affair and knocking down your counter part by cunning and treacherous means is the only way to hail supreme in the business. And yes, all this coupled with a perfect setup to the post independence american scenario while reminiscing Vito's early days. I'd go for eleven even if i entitled to do it for only a single movie.
Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain (2014)
The dark side of Industrial revolution portrayed well in Bhopal's ill-fated past
A very apt representation of desperate independent India welcoming a
greedy western pesticide conglomerate who's only aim was monopoly over
the pesticide sector in developing India. All this, at the cost of the
health of the people who reside in the vicinity of the city of Bhopal.
Some sleek character representation without any over the top character
portrayals make this a very canny depiction of this infamous event in
modern India. Martin Sheen does a very good job at being a
self-centered yet cunning CEO who wants Union Carbide to prosper even
if its at the cost of the lives of the residents. Kal Penn is on point
in playing the role of the only journalist who is audacious enough to
raise his voice against the misdemeanor the factory was posing on the
people. Rajpal Yadav for me steals the show for picturing a shrewd
illiterate worker who wants to earn the livelihood of his family and
help his sister get married which was troublesome in those days due to
dowry demands. Mischa barton, playing the role of Eva Gascon is an
audacious reporter from the Paris match who comes for some other
trivial reason but is baffled knowing what was going on in the city.
The perception of the authorities has been highlighted well and there
have been subtle references to how the west found the third world
poverty driven countries like India to be a mere supplier of
unqualified masses. With a good score and well executed climax a very
highly recommended movie that gives a good insight on the flaws of
industrial revolution and how it affected the developing nations.
