Clarice: The Silence Is Over (2021)
Complete Shift
Silence of the Lambs is, in my opinion, the best movie ever made. I was extremely excited for this show, however I managed my expectations. This episode was pretty much what I expected.
The lead actress is amazing. And I'm sure the supporting cast will prove their worth as the season goes on.
The problem comes in the writing. Early in the episode, bodies are discovered. A new serial killer may be terrorizing Washington. However, it is revealed that the murders are made to look like serial killings to cover up a companies dealings with whistleblowers.
From a writing stand point, this makes no sense. Clarice Starling is not a detective. She is not a hard core investigator. She works in Behavioural Sciences. She studies the mind of a killer. Why would they have it be the work of a company? In this way, Clarice is essentially useless.
The Lighthouse (2019)
Power
This film uses an old fashioned aspect ratio to convey claustrophobia. It uses black and white to convey a sense of moral ambiguity in its characters, and it uses a flawless script, haunting score, masterful direction, and powerhouses performances to conduct a study of power, and how we as humans view and abuse it. Thrilling from its first fog filled shot to its last gruesome one.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
Pretty Good Ratio
Rose the Hat is a vile, evil, amazing character. I found myself waiting for her to get back on screen. She provides a physical threat to the heroes, edging the story into a more plot driven affair than The Shining.
Ewan McGregor is great as Dan Torrance, conveying the guilt, regret, and shame that should've been his father's.
Jack Torrance is The Shining epitomized. Cold. Unfeeling. Almost not even human. His son, Dan, is Doctor Sleep. Compassionate. Hopeful. In this way, Doctor Sleep compliments The Shining, as when the two films are out together they show humanity at its best and worst.
Kyleigh Curran is amazing as Abra, giving the audience a smart, level headed heroine to root for.
As the film moves into its third act, I found myself smiling ear to ear and fist pumping on about five occasions in thirty minutes. Pretty good ratio.
