Kathmandu Connection (2021)
Reasonably good cinematography, casting, taut with an unexpected climax
Yes, this may have similarities with the Batla House encounter, but we only risk going overboard by calling it "Islamist propaganda". And by no stretch of imagination after looking at the movie can anyone even relate to the realtime participants.
Yes, some directors still take audiences for granted, that they can just get away claiming "creative license".. But yes, let's give the praise for the efforts, acting, human angle and hope that in future such directors get a strong message due to the overall lower ratings. So the critics would do better to pick on overly biased narratives like sacred games, family man etc.
For me, most scenes were pretty predictable till the very end, including the violent lover with a heart of pure gold. But it's not as bad as some of poor ratings suggest. And this comes from a very pious desh bhakt.
Parallel (2018)
Reasonably good sci-fi viewing for 2020, not many this year. Promising efforts.
Personally, it's worth watching this one a couple of times.
I was completely taken aback at the ending, so I have my own theory:
Some versions of the same person have gotten together symbiotically for mutual benifits in their own separate universe/timelines. We saw that happening with the primary protagonist, Noel.
My take: Leena was happy to go along with the charade in most of the timelines. We also saw the sharing of advanced technologies across the multiverse - so if they factor that the gateway could be closed permanently/destroyed, they would make alternative arrangements. Possible that they found a way to open the gateway/portal ANYWHERE, like in the motel mirror room toward the ending - in that case, eliminating the meddling Leena in the primary timeline made sense.
Also if the gateway is destroyed IN ONE UNIVERSE, that does not mean that its destroyed in all the other timelines 😂
God, too many possibilities. Anyone with alternate explanations?
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)
Reasonably OK movie, worth a look but no Dobaras for me..
Pros: 1. Great cinematography 2. Very funny in parts 3. Abhay Deol again shows how flexible he can be and how miles ahead he is from anyone in the Deol family when it comes to acting 4. Hritik and Farhan Akhtar were reasonably OK. 5. Katrina seemed a bit natural surprisingly, probably because she was using English with Hindu.
Cons: 1. Superficial story - not as well developed as Dil Chahta Hain (being unfair but expectations are expectations) 2. Passable emotionally 3.Slightly better than Zoya's last attempt (Luck by chance) 4. Javed Akhtar's poems coming from Farhan were passable 5. Naseeruddin Shah and Dipti Naval were wasted 6. Abrupt finish making the film look under-developed
3 Idiots (2009)
Excellent, deserves 9/10 for a Bollywood movie
Thoroughly enjoyed the movie, the college humor, the extremely well done dialogs, picturesque cinematography, nice and fluid flow storyline - in fact most of the movie.
Only turnoffs were the over-Bollywoodisation out of the realm of the believable, overdoing gross scenes like repeated showing of male rumps/undies. Some director just don't know where to draw the line. Maybe a Farhan Akhtar was needed for a final editing touch :-)
But the movie overall manages to fully entertain and keep you in splits or at times tears during the entire time. Would be a 9.999/10 without the turnoffs - exactly where it falls half a point below "Dil Chahta Hain", though personally it is funnier!
Extremely well cast. Aamir manages to look younger than "Rang De Basanti" or any other recent movie - nice acting too from everyone! Even the LA based Omi Vaidya has done a great job in his first Bollywood movie, as a geeky irritant.
Do not miss it for anything!!!
